Al Washington Rumors

Submitted by Losher on January 2nd, 2019 at 10:33 AM

I know these are just rumors but they are out there right now that Ohio State has already been in contact with Al Washington to take over their linebackers coach position which would be a lateral move in position at this point.

I know this is something that can happen and it would be a blow to the michigan staff it were to come to fruition. And as it is still speculation at this point i dont want to make too much of it but if some school is going to take him away i would much rather it not be the school that has been whooping up on us for the past decade.

Coaching is filled with career moves, I’m no lawyer but I see zero chance a non-compete clause would be used. 1. Would you want to keep a coach that clearly wanted to leave, independent of the reasons? 2. It would be a bad look for Harbaugh and very likely hurt him when pursuing other assistants.

Michigan has six for 2019.  Al Washington is the primary recruiter for Gabe Newburg and Joey Velazquez.  If you're a star gazer, you're not feeling really inspired by mid-tier 3* players.  We haven't seen enough of Washington to say he can develop LB's at Michigan

Washington appears to be a good recruiter, but can we say his coaching of the LB was all that great?  Besides Bush no one else had a stellar or very good year. Sucks if true, but I think we'll be fine.

speaking of Mattison..I prefer his D over Browns.  No way would it collapse in those big games .  But something tells me he is retiring ...and I wouldn't be surprised to see Hoke come back.   The DL played poorly the past two games and he has escaped scrutiny here.

I think Mattison is just about done too. It would be fitting for him to end it with guys like Chase. Starting from the ground up with all new DEs and a bunch of question marks in the interior seems like a tall ask for someone his age.

What was his recruiting like this last cycle? I don't remember him being lauded as a super-recruiter, as in years past.

I keep checking back hoping this thread is deleted because they usually get deleted for unfounded rumors.

The longer this thread stays up the more likely these rumors are true.

If Harbaugh loses Washington to OSU, that is a gigantic kick in the nuts both for Harbaugh personally and for the program in relation to recruiting in Ohio against the Buckeyes.

Hope it doesn't happen but I do feel good for the state of Ohio high school players finally getting some respect from OSU, since they were shat upon during the reign of Urban Decay.

UofM may not always get the best Ohio players but at least now, even without Washington, they'll get 5 or 6 each year that will be highly motivated for TheGame!

I don’t work in the world of these contracts, but I’m guessing the sports worlds has buyouts rather than a non-compete clause. I mean, would you REALLY want to force a guy to stay if his heart is somewhere else (ANY guy; not speaking specifically to Washingon’s situation because I don’t know rumor vs fact). How do you send that guy into a recruit’s house? “I tried to leave, but they blocked me. But would you like to play here? I guess I’ll be around...maybe.”

I hope that Warde and Coach respond the same as they did with Partridge last year. Pay him more than you want to to keep him. Coach Washington feels valued and his wandering eye is limited to extreme cases. Like mine with J Law.

Maybe this is an evil plot by Warde to stuff Day's staff with coaches that can't win big games.  That way when they play Michigan in a big game Michigan might actually win.

There is at least a chance, right?

Washington hasn’t been here long enough for us to gauge if this would be a big loss or not. I heard he’s a good recruiter but that’s pretty much based on a recruiting battle that we lost. Out of the Ohio recruits I believe only Rumler had a commitable offer from OSU and he was going to Michigan regardless of his coach or recruiter.

If true, it may be a big loss but I don’t think we know yet.

Just got confirmation from a good source (relative) that Al was just as surprised about the rumors as everyone else and there is zero truth to them.

James Yoder at Chat Sports say's he is gone. Who the fuck knows? But he is also a peddler of bs.

Whatever.
