He didn't have to explain himself the way he did.  Seems like a good kid.  Unfortunately for him, it's unlikely anyone ever hears of him again except those at BC games.  But with a good head on his shoulders, my guess is he'll do well after football anyway.

Let's focus now on who IS coming.

Sorry, not in his actual statement. Rather in the article by coacheslunch.com that reported the flip:

"As time progressed, Dillon understood the competition he would face while at Michigan...In order to gain the top spot on the depth chart, he would have to compete with some of the best players in the country.  While Dillon never shied away from competition before, his vision of college football involved actually playing.  The idea being he would commit to a school that wanted him to play, not commit to have as a contingency."

It seems like they were telling a commit something he didn't want to hear. It reminds of the David Reese situation last year.

One scenario is they had been telling him all along that he might move to LB and he asked for an assurance he would stay at RB. A change of stance on his part and he left when he didn't get it. I wouldn't draw any conclusions about what that means going forward.

Another is they recently suggested the possible switch to LB. They let that push him away. To me, that would say more about RB recruiting slots, but it could be either.

that he thinks the Michigan staff is confident they're going to land Harris. Sam himself is not willing to go that far.

It's a gamble—we're trying to flip a California kid from Alabama at the cost of Dillon and potentially Samuels and Taylor. If we win the gamble, then it's very likely worth it. If we don't, it will be reminiscent of what happened to Beilein last year—passing up talented kids who want to come here for more highly ranked recruits whose actual desire to play for Michigan is questionable.

Sam also said Samuels had to get some testing stuff in order first.

How exactly is it at the cost of Dillon and potentially Samuels and Taylor? We don't know that we're gonna lose Samuels or Taylor, nor do we know that Dillon flipped because of a crowded backfield. Or was encouraged to look elsewhere.

If you look at the way Harbaugh is building up this roster, and how he built Stanford, he is going to look for the homerun but he's not going to go all or nothing. I don't think he'd gamble to the point of it's Harris or no one else. That's just too risky a move.

Harbaugh isn't Beilein, he's not going to let talented kids walk. He has a plan, and a back-up plan. To compare his recruiting to Beilein is like comparing steak to rotting fruit.

Too bad, but I wish the kid the best of luck.  Hopefully, he can be part of some improving BC teams, if not lead that change outright.  He's right - it's a selfish decision, and only he will look out for his best interests.  He has to go where he feels like he'll fit best, and that's all this is about.  Good luck to him...

Doubtful it means anything good about Najee, it likely means the staff stayed on message about looking at him at multiple positions and it wasn't something he wanted to do.

It's a bit of a bummer, but I am glad the staff stays with a realistic message rather than making promises they don't end up keeping.

Best of luck to him.

I guess I don't understand why he can't play RB here? He's highly rated, well scouted and a power back which we don't currently have. Samuels, Taylor, and Harris are all smallish. He could have been a great short yardage back

Harris is a glider, finesse runner. Carries his weight well. Dillon is that back that I saw flying between the tackles. Being able to always fall forward. His chances are obviously higher at BC to play RB but I think he could have carved out a role here. As for Taylor being a power back? You must be referring to his 1ypc in the state title game...

It's "high," but maybe not "would commit right now" high. Based on everything I've read and inferences drawn from the same, I believe that (1) Harris has told Michigan's coaches he is committing to Michigan, (2) Michigan's coaches don't want four running backs, and (3) Michigan is confident that if Samuels leaves, they may be able to replace him with Benjamin. As a result, I think Dillon was the odd man out, but we would have been willing to retain his commitment if he'd have been willing to reaffirm it. I like Dillon as a prospect, but I consider his skill level significantly behind Harris and Samuels, and a little behind Benjamin's.

but you can't be mad at a kid doing what he wants and feels best. You know, like everyone does in their life haha. He also have a very classy, straight explaination that he didn't have to do. Best to him and I think he'll be really good.

this is the one year where RB isn't a major need. We could technically get away with just Taylor and be fine, especially if Walker is anywhere around "good". It would just be really nice to land a feature-back.

I think Harbaugh is looking for more balanced backs, we have a huge asset in Khalid Hill (Hammering Panda!) for short-yardage needs. Only problem is, everyone knows he's getting the ball...

This offensive system cannot thrive on Smith types (large, powerful but slow) or Evans/Higdon types (small, fast but down on first contact) alone. You need that combo feature-back guy that has above-average size, speed, strength, etc. They'll all be used but you want that one guy to get 15+ carries a game.
