Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun Post-Game Comments on Michigan

Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun had some interesting remarks about Michigan's football team post-game.

Link here because my embedding skills suck. Sorry guys.

1.       On the Speed of Michigan

“It was a factor…..High quality players…..They are an exceptional group”

2.       On Michigan’s physicality

“They’re a stout group. I mean, an impressive squad. Certainly are going to win a bunch of football games this year. It’s just their size, their athleticism, and a pretty complete group.”

3.       Game plan-wise, you didn’t complete a pass in the first half…were you concentrating on establishing the run?

“Well, they are a little bit different. They probably don’t have to quite commit as many guys to the run as maybe some of other squads we’ve faced.  It’s not like there were 11 guys within 4 yards of the line of scrimmage, so they had something to do with that (lack of success throwing).

4.       About getting outside on Michigan in the 2nd half

“Well, we probably blocked a little bit better. And then, candidly, in the first…especially the first 25 minutes of the game, we’ tried…..but.... to block bodies that size, that move that well and that play blocks as well as they do, again…I mean, that’s a credit to their guys.”

5.       Was their anything about Michigan that surprised you, that you didn’t expect to see today that you didn’t see on film?

“Um, I wouldn’t say surprise. But I think once you get on the field and you recognize with whom they are playing, it’s impressive. It is. You know, they’ve done a super, super job in recruiting, it does hurt a bit when you get a chance to play a game here (Ann Arbor) where they’ve been pretty fair the last 2 ½ years.”

6.       What did you see on the punt return. Did your kicker sort of outkick the coverage there?

“Uh no sir. I think the returner, like a said a bit earlier, he’s a…..he’s not small, and he does have some decent feet, any time you got that kind of combination with a returner, they have good strength in order to break some tackles. They did a good job with three key blocks and once he’s got a little bit of room, he’s gonna go.”

7.       You held them mainly to field goals, you weren’t giving up touchdowns until the very end…your defense….you held them to 5 field goals.

“We did. We gave up some yards. Like I said we’re going to dissect and debrief and learn from this and keep developing.  That’s what we really, really have to do."

With so many people believing in talking snakes and a guy living in a whale or another guy ascending to heaven on a horse, I don't think any of this is new or isolated to this country.

It's just more obvious and sad now that science and information is so readily available on the web...but so is misimnformation.

It shouldn't be a surprise, but everything about Air Force and the way they run the program is class.  I'd be shocked if I ever saw an unsportsmanlike play from an Air Force player, or an outburst from one of their coaches.  It was neat to see their postgame ritual too, where the whole team, band, and staff stand at attention while they play (what I assume was) their alma mater.

Scott Frost was just grasping at straws and if he continued to make the same type of comments after a loss would really make himself look silly. Know on to Dantonio. That guy just flat out hates Michigan. He hates Michigan fans. He hates the color blue and yellow. He hates Harbaugh. That is why it is great to beat that clown because he is going to act childish and be forced to swallow his pride. He will be forced into the same situation this year and I can't wait to see what he says. Isn't Dantonio part of the osu clan and from Ohio. That pretty much sums up why he is a douchbag does'nt it?.

Hey even though he was stating the obvious, it is kind of refreshing to hear positive comments instead of sour grapes. The thing is Air Force played a tough game and has some tough kids on there squad also. I saw a team who is well coached, confident and tough. This is one team I hope kicks everyone's ass they have on there schedule. Gained a lot of respect for that squad all the way around.

I went back and read the "Punt/Counterpunt" for Air Force, because I hadn't read it before the game. The guys predicted UM to win by 4 and 14 points, both well below the spread and both TIGHTER than the actual game outcome. I am not sure anyone who really knew what we'd be getting in AF thought it would be a cakewalk...

Yeah, and they won their bowl game last year too - plus returned their two best players (or arguably two of their best three players). Their losing streak last year was an anomaly, and their winning streak coincided with them finding their QB and riding him. Kind of like USC last year. Difference is, AF is still good this year.

Troy Calhoun is not an ego maniac.

He is in danger of being disqualified from the College Football Coaches National Convention.

I feel as though he is a very classy coach. I agree the size and athleticism of this young team is certainly something to behold. I hope all the offensive coaches on this team get their act together. This will be the fourth game and the offensive line should be gaining the necessary cohesion. DPJ looks like he is ready to explode.

I suspect the coach is being diplomatic when it comes to the UM offense, but what he says about the defense is probably 100% honest.

Calhoun is a great coach and there is a reason why they are a legitimate threat to win the Mountain West every year. MUCH better than the Army team that OSU ran over.

play AF?

Also, unrelated:  Using /s is a sophisticated way to signal sarcasm.  It doesn't defang your prose at all, and it respects the intelligence of other University of Michigan fans.  Let's keep using it.

from a coach who is a credit to the coaching profession.  I did not see AF make many mistakes Saturday.  They were an efficient team that had schemes that worked to their advantage with timely blitzes and effective schemes, and clock chewing.  Hope they do as well as I think they will the rest of the year.

Harbaugh brought that up as well. They are a team that you have to beat, they will not beat themselves. Other than their one completion that went for the 64 yard TD, we essentially shut them down. Air Force fans aren't used to seeing such dominant defense from opposing teams.
