Afternoon Games Open Thread

When NC vs. GT is your best FOOTBALL game, it's hard to get excited. The afternoon looks like a better warm up to tonight's events.

on every single play.  Something we couldnt even do against Akron.  Does not bode well for our chances against them or any decent team.  Mattison doesn't appear to have any confidence in his defense to play tight, rather than very loose.

have been to closely covered receivers.  He has not had wide open receivers to throw to on almost every play, as our opponents have.

And yes, as I said, Mattison has no confidence in our back 7 not to get beaten deep over and over if he plays tighter coverage.  So he plays soft, gives up a lot of yards, and crosses his fingers.  Not a recipe for success this season, if it continues.

While it is effective most of the time, it leaves them open to the big play down the field. Gardner and company should have some chances downfield against them, they will need to take advantage of them.

I would also argue they get away with interference almost every play as well. They love to put their hands on receivers after 5-10 yards. Of course, it is smart to keep on doing if it is only being called occasional.

that's the way that talented defenses that win champioships play.  Our pass D is very, very soft, and will get shredded against just about everyone.  We couldn't even close down Akron's passing game, so what chance do we stand against Northwestern, Indiana, Penn State, Nebraska or OSU?

what it is has shown so far. Countess and Taylor may not be complete lockdown corners, but they both are experienced and have played solid in the past. The young guys should get better as the season goes as well. You can't assume the game we saw against Akron will be norm for the rest of the season. The Akron game is done and over, it was a unfocused and terrible effort, it doesn't mean that will a recurring theme.

Let's see what the team looks like tonight after what should be a wakeup call. If things don't look better, than the panic button may be more appropriate.

You don't normally hear a field goal described as "incomplete". I imagine we'll hear about a "no good pass" in the coming minutes here.

This game is getting to be an ugly one offensively for both teams. ND has 114 yards but only 3 points and they are 2 for 6 on third downs.

MSU got a coupe of critical, deflating first down makes. Huge third down now, as these things go. No way does this miserable game suggest that we'll have an easy time with MSU.

I hope lewan and gardner meant it, otherwise MSU is likely to beat us in EL. Our team is too pretentious, acting like the shit, almost losing to Akron. Note how poor our road record is combined with how long we havent won a title too. Players have gotten way too much positive attention relative to our former players who actually won and deserved it
