Advertising in Yost
It seems strange to me that there are no ads in the Big House, but Yost has quite a few. As a southerner, and a hockey-novice (only really interested in it since I came to Michigan), would it simply be impractical to get rid of them? Why did they come in the first place? Are we really that dependent on outside advertising for revenues?
I think the Big House is the odd one out, not Yost. When Fielding H. Yost, the man, had the vision to build Michigan Stadium, one of his big things was that there should be absolutely no outside advertisements in the stadium. I know that once, way back, during an OSU game, the MMB formed the word "Buck" and then under it, the letter "I", then because Buick had just donated a ton of money, they moved the "I" into the "Buck" to from the word "Buick" and Yost, who was at that game, got REALLY mad and called the then band director and let him have it. That's why there's no advertising in the Big House. I would assume that, though maybe not completely DEPENDENT on outside advertising for our athletic departments revenue, they're not going to pass up the opportunity for money, this is all a business, after all. :-S
Also, football, especially in the 110,000 person Big House is going to bring in a LOT more people and thus money from tickets, concessions, donations, etc. than hockey in the 6,600 person Yost Ice Arena, so it is far easier to afford not having advertisements at the Big House than Yost.
OT True story. I dated Yost's great grand daughter in the early 90's. She was such a bitch to her family about her Michigan legacy that she went to state.
...that your story pretty much gives us the right to burn her at the stake on the fifty yard line. But we all rebel in our youth, and I guess she has to suffer the rest of her life with the knowledge that she's a Spartan.
Fate worse than fire, I suppose...
I'm dating one of Bob Ufer's granddaughters.
cool history lesson GoBlueFoSho. Yeah, I imagine it's more an issue of need. As in hockey really needs it. They barely break even, so they probably need all the money they can get.
I know that Amaker banished all the signage from Crisler when he got to Michigan. Excuse my cluelessness, but is that still the case today?
but I don't recall seeing any advertisement in my last two trips to Crisler. If there is any advertising in Crisler, then it is pretty minor.
There are still ads on the scoreboard (and possibly at halfcourt), but none elsewhere in the arena. I don't think it was Amaker's call, though. IIRC, we had ads all over until about 2006 or so, when they suddenly were taken down.
You would think such a successful college team would be ok...
I wonder if there are any budgets online to look into...

Big10Fan looked up the biggest athletic budgets of all college teams. Michigan's happens to be 89,000,000. But considering we just built $200 million suites and other renovations to the football stadium, renovations to the baseball stadium, a brand new practice facility, and renovation to the weight room, a little advertising is ok. it's gonna take a while to pay that all off.
