Acquiring DC Mattison

Submitted by rpel84 on

Mattison is a beast.  Why couldnt we get a D coordinator like him when RR was there?  What was the problem?  I mean how did we stoop to the level of GERG when guys like Mattison obviously would have come here?  Want to see what opinions were out there.

But the whole loyalty thing and always bringing people you know concerns me. I guess it makes sense to some degree. Bu it also seems you want the best staff possible. I like Mattison, and like the fact that he has a good relationship with Hoke. I also trust that Mattison will be able to add the right position coaches that he wants to work with.

I am less convinced about our OC, Borges. I guess I'll just have to wait to see how this plays out.

The one area I wish there had NOT been a change would have been in S&C. I think that Barwis could have stayed and done a good job under Hoke. I am curious:  what is Barwis up to now? Is he on the payroll somewhere at Michigan? Is it a foregone conclusion that he will hit the road soon?

Barwis is out. Hoke's guy is in and has held workouts.

As far as hiring people you know, it works out well when you know people like Mattison. The only catch is those people you know better damn well deliver. If not you can reference Rodriguez, Rich (Defensive Assistants).

S&C coach, though his techniques differ from Barwis, they are very effective.  He isn't nearly as much of a media darling as Barwis (in fact he pretty much shuns the media), but that isn't always a bad thing.

Ray Vinopal said after the first workout that "The new S&C staff kicked our @sses, big time!" He also said that the team needed it, and that he is glad that they make the team work their tales off.

GERG had an okay resume and he wasn't able to do all of the things he wanted to do and was forced into a scheme he knew nothing about. I dont think it's fair to say "the likes of GERG". Dude put his time and effort into helping develop our players and our program. Did it work out the way we wanted to no. But, it is time to move on... Let it go...

Brady Hoke is the HC at Michigan, and it was through the power of Hokeamania that we were able to get Greg Mattison. And it's with them and the rest of our Michigan family that will lead us on to victory for years to come.

Hail to the Victors!!!

I still think Shafer was/is a good defensive football coach, and the whole thing was handeled poorly.

I dont really care if mattison runs a 1-9-1, or a 6-1-4, or a 1-5-5.......as long as the kids tackle, and there arent any stuffed animals on the sidelines...
