Academic Eligibility

How are players ruled academically eligible to play at Michigan? I know there is a clearing house, but is a national thing? Does Michigan have any other standards for admittance? Everyone also talks about it is harder academically to get into Notre Dame. Is that true?

Yes, you need to go through the ncaa clearinghouse to become eligible to receive a scholarship. A combination of gpa and test scores will clear the student-athlete. Once you are cleared, you need to be admitted to a particular university. This has nothing to do with the ncaa. It is all done by each university's own standards. Obviously, athletes do tend to get breaks for admittance, but their academic requirements to remain eligible throughout their four-five years is pretty tough. When I was in college, the rules were much more loose, but now, you have to have a higher percentage of classes towards a degree earlier in their career than before. I believe this rule changed in 2004 perhaps.

Out of curiousity is this why Raper has not yet been offered. I think he would be a really good get. Raper was rated a 4 star until his grades went south. Now that he is clear he seems like the type of kid that RR would go after but if he can't keep the grades it will do no good to have the kid.

Notre Dame is mostly hype on the super tough academic entrance standards for football players. The Orlando Sentinel use to score schools on academic entrance standards for football players: 1 the lowest and 10 the highest. Notre Dame scored a respectable 7. However, quite often 8 (or more) of their 12 opponents on a season's schedule scored 7 or higher too. Michigan also scored a 7. Just off of the top of my head, these are schools that ND plays frequently that scored the same or higher if I remember correctly...UofM, PSU, UCLA, UNC, GaTech, Army, Navy, Air Force, BYU, BC. In other words, most of their schedule in a typical year has the same or tougher...no excuses for the Irish. If 8 of your opponents have relatively the same or tougher standards then you can't whine about it. ND has admitted players with horrible scores. http://www.collegefootballresource.com/blog/2005/1/20/admission-standar…
