#5 W Gymnastics beats MSU for the 20th straight time

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

For the 20th straight time, Michigan has beaten MSU.

The #5 Michigan Women beat MSU 196.725-194.850 at Jenison Field House. The Wolverines now lead the all-time series 65-38.

Michigan now moves to 7-0 overall and 5-0 in the B1G. The Wolverines will not have B1G meet for another month when they travel to Minnesota for the Big Five meet--a five way against the remaining teams that Michigan has not faced yet (Iowa, Minnesota, Penn State and Rutgers).

Michigan has already beaten the 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams in the B1G in #7 Nebraska, #15 Illinois and #24 Ohio State.

Things are looking very good right now in the standings for Michigan. The only tough test in the B1G regular season that stands in Michigan's way is Penn State who will be in that Big Five meet.

If Michigan takes care of business in that meet against PSU and the other 3 teams that Michigan SHOULD beat, they will win their first B1G Dual Meet Championship since 2013 when the B1G first instituted the Dual Meet Championship.

Next up, #5 Michigan will pack Crisler Center for a BTN-televised dual meet against #1 Oklahoma. That is going to be an incredibly interesting meet to see where Michigan is at against their top national competition. This team certainly has the senior stars to be in the NCAA Super Six and challenge for that NCAA Championship.

but this made me chuckle:

Not exactly the longest drought.

Thought of writing an update last week after they upset #2 Stanford, but may as well give it in a preview to their upcoming meet in Norman, which should be a another good one.

Oklahoma, long a powerhouse in gymnastics, is currently #1 for both men & women.  Their men's team is undefeated so far this year, with 7 returning seniors and only one freshman.

The Michigan men, like the women, are currently #5, but they're not undefeated, having a rebuilding year after the graduation of our Olympians.  With talented youngsters and a few upperclassmen coming back from injury, they're gradually working in more competitive routines, debuting some riskier moves to upset #2 Stanford last week here at home.  (The two teams they've lost to, Penn State & Illinois, are currently #3 and #4.  With Oklahoma, Michigan will have already competed against all the teams in last year's NCAA finals.)  Their only current all-arounder is a true freshman, Dmitri Belanovski, who capped the Stanford meet with a stuck landing in his new high bar routine, clinching the victory for the home team.  Stacey Ervin, with three events scoring above 15.000, was named co-B1G gymnast of the week.

As for those graduated Olympians, 3-time NCAA Champ Sam Mikulak and Syque Caesar, one of the highlights of the Stanford meet was that they were the commentators on BTNPlus.  They've stayed at Michigan as graduate assistants while they continue training, and now they may have an alternate career.  They were terrific (in my completely unbiased opinion).  Besides being incredibly knowledgeable and knowing most of the top men on the other teams, they were obviously enjoying themselves, helping us neophytes understand what makes one routine higher scoring and which positions on rings are inhumanly painful even when done correctly.  Hope they get another chance.
