3rd String QB - Joe Milton? Wherefore art thou, Brandon Peters?

Submitted by boliver46 on October 15th, 2018 at 1:47 PM

SIAP or discussed but I have been dealing with a family matter and am not caught up in all things Michigan.

I noticed in the follow-up after the game that it was stated (paraphrased), that Joe Milton has taken over as the #3 QB.

Having a hard time finding out how or why Milton passed up Brandon Peters.

Is Brandon Peters hurt?

Thanks in advance.

And to defray negs due to my ignorance of the situation - here is a funny image that has Always Been Here.

My opinion regarding Peters is that it was over last year when he lost the QB competition to Speight.  He admitted to losing motivation and slacking off once he found out he wasn't going to be the starter.  And his lack of effort and preparation led us to start O'Korn, and later an unprepared Peters.

My guess is that didn't sit too well in the locker room.

Maybe I'm wrong.

I figured Milton just played because he was already in for a gadget play, if he's burning a game against his redshirt, may as well play him as much as possible.

Is it possible Peters injury was more serious than we thought?

I do wonder if Peters would still be behind DCaff if Patterson never happened - could be DCaff is more like "Shea-lite" than Peters can be and thus is a better backup in the 2018 offense. Given the recruitment of Milton, could be Harbaugh is seeing the light and moving to a more dual-threat offense and Peters might end up a victim of that.

McCaffrey has just played in his 4th game.  If healthy, my money's on Peters being the mop up guy moving forward, preserving McCaffrey's redshirt.  However, if Shea goes down (please no) in a close game we'll play McCaffrey and burn his redshirt.  Milton will remain a gadget/mop up guy until he hits 4 games.  I think Peters is actually our #2 QB, as in a permanent backup.

debored=dumb. so many people give stupid uninformed comments on here like they know something. you have the whole qb rotation figured out, and yet you don't even know what class the players are in. and if you can't tell who the backup qb is then you are lost.

My guess is Harbaugh wanted to get him some playing time and some experience in prime time, and is getting some packages built in for him for some big games coming up if we need it, but I believe the depth chart would have Peters 3rd.

My completely speculative, uneducated guess: Milton was put in to give him a couple of reps in a real game atmosphere, especially once the game was already well in-hand. Whether he's actually passed Peters on the depth chart, I don't know. My guess is Peters is still #3.

What I do know is that it's clear McCaffery has passed Peters on the depth chart, and presuming Patterson leaves after this season (he's said as such that he wants to), this is McCaffery's offense next year. With McCaffery being a year younger, Peters may be at a point where he never gets the starting role back. I wonder if he'll end up transferring after the season is over. Certainly would not blame him if he did.

My prediction for the depth chart next Fall:

1) McCaffery - he's the guy, especially based on what we've seen in the time he's played. For the first time since Harbaugh has arrived at Michigan, we have an offseason not wondering who the QB will be.

2) Milton - Still too raw to take over, but another year or two of tutelage under Harbaugh might have him ready to challenge for the job by 2020. All the talent in the world for him to be a truly special player at the position.

3) McNamara - true freshman QB is true freshman QB. Won't see the field for anything other than 4 games of mop-up duty.

Officially JH has said DM has earned the right to remain in the #2 spot.  We are left to assume BP is still #3 and just hasn't had an opportunity to play recently and that JM is the #4.  It appeared that JM will have some different packages that the coaches wanted to try out which is what we saw against Wiscy, but I believe they will still try and RS him.  However it is beginning to seem like BP is on his way out at the end of the year judging by his lack of appearances although nothing official has been said.

The talent is there, something didn’t click with harbaugh. I see mccaffrey and Shea getting hyped up and showing intensity all the time. Peters could make a great play or the team could make a great play and he barely showed any emotion. It’s not that he wasn’t into the game or excited for his team, he’s just more laid back. I think harbaugh thought that was a weakness in a QB. He probably expected more from Brandon than the other QBs to make up for his lack of intensity.

He’s the best arm talent on the roster and in his recruiting profile, they say he was the best combination of arm talent and athleticism of the 2016 QB class. That includes Shea. I think Brandon has mentally checked out. I see no reason why he was third string last year. Performed the best of all three QBs with that train wreck of an offense. That f***s with someone mentally. You see results and you know you’re better but you’re relegated to third string. It’s the same this year with him and Dylan. The injury set him back and he was passed up because of it. I think his talent was wasted here. He had easily the best tape coming out of high school of any qb on the roster and it’s not even close. He looked like a future first rounder. He still does but once you mentally lose your edge as a QB, it’s hard to get back.

Sometimes it takes a coach trusting in you to get that edge and focus. Look at Athanasiou on the wings. He was finally given a chance to get more ice time and he’s now way better because of it. Harbaugh was forced to give peters a chance. Him getting into the games last year wasn’t jim saying “I trust you with our team” it was “we can’t get much worse so I’ll play the young guy.” If my coach when I was young put me in a game over someone else who was playing well, I would have a much better mindset rather than my coach being forced to put me in due to injuries or horrible play in guys he deemed better than me. It sounds soft but it’s just the way some people are wired. I see a lot of my own personality in peters and I had issues with coaches in hockey who didn’t like that I wasn’t as intense as other players. I knew I was better than them and my teammates knew it. They got the ice time and the chances and I didn’t. It f***ed with my head and I checked out. Stopped playing my senior year all together. If I had a coach who was willing to trust me and give me chances, I might not have been just a normal college student but a student athlete. Peters is experiencing this at the college level. It’s hard to get engaged in a game or practice when the coach is benching you not based on talent or performance but on loudness and intensity.

I totally buy that. But at the same time you *want* a QB to have that confidence and intensity. That's how you get up and keep going after an INT or a sack. It gives teammates the confidence to play hard knowing you're going to lead them down the field. You hear all the players and coaches say how much the players love playing for Shea. That's notable for two things -- they never said that about Brandon, and the fact that they're going out of their way to say it now implies that the opposite was true re Brandon (and probably O'Korn as well).

DCaff is clearly #2 and a favorite of the coaching staff.  Will be starter next year or year after depending on Shea.  Thinking Milton was put in to distract other teams and force prep going forward.  Peters would definitely be in before Milton if the OMG NEVERNEVER happens!  DCaff,Milton, McNamara, hopefully the GA kid the following year is the QB pipeline that Harbaugh envisioned.  Iron sharpens iron!!  Unfortunately that leaves looking for apartments in another college town next year!

The latest I read on Harrison Bailey is the he is not going to Michigan.

Michigan is a close second, and something may still persuade him to go Michigan. But it looks like he wants to go somewhere that he has a legitimate chance at starting as a freshman, and is closer to home. Michigan loses on both counts.

But there's other QBs out there. Jim Harbaugh will find one.

We'll probably never know, but I'm interested to see how the guy who absolutely looked "fine" as a QB beyond the South Carolina game is suddenly passed by a couple of guys.  To read the couple of people here who seem to have a major issue with Peters's existence for some reason, it's because he's ready to transfer and is terrible, but I'd like to know what happened here.

If Patterson goes pro and Peters transfers, we are going to be scary thin once again at QB.

I would think Milton needs another couple of years of seasoning, and won't be ready for prime-time next year if called upon.

Peters leaving could really put us in a bind.

If Patterson stays, we're golden again.

Pretty sure Peters lost his 3rd string role when he came in against Nebraska and threw an INT. It was kind of sickening seeing him play as it briefly reminded me of how horrible it was to watch our QBs last year
