247 Rankings updates - 2022 Football targets

Submitted by AZBlue on February 24th, 2021 at 2:42 PM

Saw on the Twitters that 247 came out with updated rankings today so I took a look....

Not a whole lot of change for our 5 current commits.

There was notable movement on several targets.  Notes: I do not consider myself a recruitnik so please feel free to add and correct as needed.  I have used 247's numbers as they are the most recent site to do an update.

QB -- M put out recent offers to 3 QBs.  The 2 I remembered were Drew Allar from Ohio and Cade Klubnik (?) from TX.  --  Allar jumped over 350 spots to #89 overall and a rating of 94.  Klubnik jumped 120 spots to 99 overall.

TE - Oscar Delp out of GA (M was his first offer and he grew up a M fan fwiw) jumped about 200 spots to 81 overall -- This appears to be a UGA v. M battle per a recent Webb/Lorenz podcast

WR - Illinois targets Caleb Brown and Tyler Morris both fell 15-20 spots to #59 and #78 respectively.  Both held their 247 ratings so this was a case of others moving up.  I believe Brown is considered a M v OSU battle where Morris is considered most likely to M.

CB - M legacy "5-star" Will Johnson shows down 18 spots to 33 in the new 247 rankings - outside their traditional 5-star cutoff.  This one is strange to me and I assume will change as the cycle progresses. Currently 247 has only 4 listed 5-stars, only 7 prospects rated 96 or higher, and prospects 8-45 all have the same 95 rating as Johnson.  Johnson announces this Sunday between M, USC, and OSU with M considered the most likely destination.

RB -- Gavin Sawchuck out of Colorado is considered a 5-star by the composite is in the same range as Johnson on 247 at 44 overall and a 95 rating (down 1).  Apparently he is Mike Hart's #1 target though current Ballz are 100% to OU.

Allen Trieu mentioned that Will Johnson dropped because they don't have enough verified information on him (40 time, etc) and they havent scouted him against high level competition. His rating stayed the same but others jumped in ahead of him.

On a more positive note, Steve Wiltfong upped his crystal ball prediction to a 9! Trieu also said he will likely be upping his confidence. Will is committing this Sunday, Feb 28th.

**Commence conspiracy theories that a players rating slides when they lean towards Michigan**

Figured I'd add a few more as I look at the list further..

---DT -- Walter Nolen  from TN holds at #2 overall -- He has some M ties and we made the most recent cut.  Sam Webb basically called him "Rashan Gary but bigger" in a recent podcast..

--OT - Kiayaunta Goodwin from Indiana - #54 (+99; bumped from a 91 to a 94) -- Top target for Sherrone Moore (not the kind of kid we would have chased under Warriner per Webb) - current 100% CB to OSU

EDIT - To clarify re: Goodwin  - It's not that he isn't the kind of person/prospect we would chase under Warriner, just that M would have probably given up the pursuit without immediate and/or strong positive feedback.

His explanation makes sense but it lacks consistency with other decisions. Most notably, JJ's ranking, where a lot of analysts said he could rise if he has a chance to play against better competition and rate himself against his top peers in camps. The guy went to IMG, won them a national championship, and performed well at a bunch of camps and was passed up by Drake Maye and Sam Huard who didn't even play their senior years.

Will Johnson dropped to 33rd in the nation? Time to pull his offer.

On a serious note.....it just feels right to have Mike Hart going after a top RB on our behalf. Really happy about that!

We should offer MMA classes as part of the curriculum to help attract and prepare these young men for possible altercations in Columbus cooler stores.

(I guess it would help in the shoe too since it looks just like a toilet.)

I think Harbaugh would have a good chance if he did choose to pursue Klubnik as he’s a TAMU legacy. But TAMU already has QB Conner Weigman who is gonna end the cycle as a 5 star. So the only real threat right now is Texas who want to end the cycle with another QB along with Maalik Murphy.

Definitely possible considering USC just did it this past recruiting cycle as they got the QB Jaxson Dart (No.65) and QB Miller Moss (No. 75). Texas’s QB room is very depleted. Also I guess Texas did it in 2020 as they got Ja’Quinden Jackson and Hudson Card both rated in the top 100.

Rivals is also updating their rankings/ratings this week. Some notables:

  • #40 Cade Klubnik, QB, TX (+106)
  • #54 Kiyaunta Goodwin, OL, IN (+15)
  • #89 Oscar Delp, TE, GA (+88)
  • #249 Benjamin Morrison, CB, AZ (prev. NR)
  • Tayven Jackson, QB, IN, now a 4*

Thanks for the info --- I don't mean to slight Rivals, I just follow a lot more 247 folks on twitter. (I actually saw the update from a MSU follow..)

Back to topic -- Tayven Jackson - the QB you note above - was the 3rd recent QB offer that I was blanking on the name.  Actually the younger brother of Trace Jackson-Davis of IU MBB.

I'm pretty sure that UM was Gavin Sawchuck's first major offer.  Hopefully that's worth something.  I'm very familiar with this one (my son is a classmate of his), and he's a terrific kid.  Talented, intelligent, humble, friendly... he really has it all.  He probably would have no problem getting into UM without football.

Kaleb Brown is a weird situation. OSU probably leads but he’s the 5th/6thWR on there board reportedly. At the most they take 4 WRs this cycle and they already have one commitment in Caleb Burton. They have one soft commit in Kyion Grayes and are heavily pursing Kojo Antwi. Question is if they want a 4th WR in the class and I think if they do want a 4th WR they pick PSU commit Kaden Saunders who will not be committed to PSU for very much longer. This leaves Brown to Michigan.
