2016 TE Chase Allen offered

Submitted by AnthonyThomas on

He is 6'6" and from Missouri. Already has two crystal ballz to Michigan just this evening.

It's been obvious (at least I think) that Nauta isn't leaving the South unless it breaks off and sinks into the ocean. The coaches seem to be conceding to this.

Allen looks plenty athletic and is a good receiver. Will need to put on weight but so does basically every TE recruit.

Thoughts on top tight ends not wanting to come here:

All Georgia or any other team has to do is grab a tape of some other tight end-heavy offense and say, "Hey, we haven't used our tight ends recently but that's because we don't have anyone as good as you. Here's how we'll use you when you come here." Kids aren't going to question that, especially if the school in question is the one that they've grown up with. Nauta is a Georgia kid, and the two OSU commits are both from Ohio. Those states aren't going to lose their in-state guys very often (there's no way any Ohio kid offered by OSU is going anywhere else right now).

Michigan also has to overcome the fact that recruits are no longer old enough to remember a good Michigan team. I remember being a kid and always wondering what the big deal was with Notre Dame. It didn't register to me that they were a good football program because, well, they hadn't been one in my lifetime. This year's recruits were nine-years-old in 2006.

For as much hand-wringing as people do around here about recruiting and getting highly rated talent, I think one of the problems that people overlook sometimes is that because of that extended period where we were, shall we say, lost in the woods, Michigan now has to sell itself as most other programs do now rather than live on simply being Michigan. I get the sense that a few people on the board seem to think we can say "Michigan" and prospective student-athletes will still jump - not so much lately.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the inexpereince of Jay Harbaugh as the TE coach. I wouldn't think that would matter...looking at Jake Butts year etc. but who knows what kids are thinking.

"Jake Butt was going to be good no matter who coached him" "He's only 26. He doesn't know what it takes to get you to the NFL"

Obviously we saw the growth and development of AJ Williams as well as the emergence of Bunting and Khalid Hill but your average 17 year old from out of state does not

but I think there is and I always have. I think he's too young to be taken seriously by most recruits and their coaches/families. He can befriend them but the negative comes in what kids want in a coach (an authority figure). The young coach sweet spot is around 30 as you're young enough to relate with them but old enough that you don't hit the awkward wall where they don't see you as or want you as their coach. It's the same feeling as when the boss has a son that is way too young and inexperienced to be your boss but inevitably gets the job. You resent it no matter how much you don't want to or how friendly he is. It's awkward to take direction from someone your junior that's inexperienced compared to the guy your age that's been there and should have landed the job. This point isn't just for Nauta but most kids that meet with a 26 year old dude and then Richt or Saban or Mora or even their position coaches. Jay is the dude you swap music and play Madden with, the other guys are who you go to play for. He's too young right now, IMO.

His only offers are CMU, WMU.

At least Allen has some Big 10 west offers in Minn and Ill.  Minn found Maxx Williams so might have an eye for under the radar TE types.

Man it sucks to be a Gopher fan - Allen only has 3 crystal balls and 2 of the 3 Minn guys immediately switched Allen to UM tonight upon offer.

Allen is 6'7" and often lines up as a WR. His video looks more like a Paul Jokisch than a traditional TE. Been a long time since we've had a player that tall line up wide.

Butt coming back probably wasn't a positive sign for a recruit looking to play immediately. Harbaugh's offense is TE focused, but you have your 3 best pass catchers back, and to supplant any of them for significant minutes would probably be tough.

Georgia's TE, Jeb Blazevich, is only a sophomore this year. Miami's TE, David Njoku, averaged 18 yards/catch this year and is just a freshman. Michigan's TE job is more promising, because the spot will be vacant in 2017 for sure, plus there are lots of multipe TE sets.

Ertz was a 4*, #5 TE in nation

Fleener was a 3*, #42 TE in nation

If you come to UM and are one of the top 2 TEs on the roster you are going to be developed and get production because the passing offense is built around you.  Even AJ Williams and his 1 career catch coming into 2015 showed that.

Harbaugh will take 2 TEs every year and almost all of them will be somewhere between Fleener and Ertz as recruits. They won't all be great, and we don't need them to. But a lot of them will be really good and one every few years will be Jake Butt. That's all we need.

But man this sucks. I don't think we'll ever be as talented as Ohio State from a rankings perspective. They went in and took: Bosa x2, Zeke, Barrett, Vonn Bell, McMillian, and Dontre' Wilson all out of SEC country. All top 100ish guys.

That's on top of getting anyone they want from the state of Ohio and cherry picking two of the top guys from Michigan every year. It's incredibly frustrating that we can't seem to land a Nauta type from the South -- and when we do (Derrick Green), he ends up sucking.

Need talent but seeing what we did with AJ Williams and I think we can get by with less than elite talent at the position.

Michigan has somewhat sucked for close to a decade, it's not surprising that we can't pull 4 & 5 star guys from the South yet. Recruits want to win. Until we do that consistently, we won't be on par with OSU recruiting wise.

But these guys arent in the NFL yet, and its the only time most will get to pick where they play. So yeah, its not a bad gig to go play and live where its sunny and nice all the time for 3-4 years. Remember they have to live and go to school there out of season as well.

I hate this argument. A kid picking to play in good weather doesnt mean he doesnt want to prepare for the NFL or wont be able to succeed. Aaron Rodgers came from Cal and he does alright up in Green Bay. Jim Kelly went to the U and did pretty decent in Buffalo for a long time.

this is why were gonna continue to be third best in the division. Cant close on top recruits (hill, jones, walker, and nauta) are headed elsewhere and we cant even find a defensive coordinator. To most on here tho, we got harbaugh and thats all we need smh. Back to them 8-4 9-3 seasons

We need people who want to play for the University of Michigan. Harbaugh should not have to beg for players to come here. Harbaugh is a legend. This University is legendary. Tight ends play a large role in this offense. Their is proof in the NFL. This is a good looking tight end prospect. I hope he decides to come here. Fuck all the dumb asses that don't want to come here.
