2015 Roster By Home State

Submitted by jonesie022 on
In yet another "would the season just get here already" post, here is the breakdown of home state for the 2015 roster: Michigan - 48 Ohio - 23 Florida - 8 Illinois - 8 New Jersey - 5 Maryland - 3 Pennsylvania - 3 Virginia - 2 New York - 2 Utah - 2 Tennessee - 1 Missouri - 1 Kentucky - 1 Iowa - 1 Colorado - 1 New Mexico - 1 Massachusetts - 1 California - 1 Georgia - 1 Washington - 1 Indiana - 1 North Carolina - 1 Alabama - 1 Australia - 1 How does this compare to the glory years? I'd like to know if we had more studs from the hot beds and if there is a correlation between more of those kids on the roster and success. Logic would state so. I think that the priority this staff is putting on the west coast (California) and other hot beds like Florida, New Jersey and Pennsylvania directly correlates with the lack of results on the field these past few years. We will never dominate in those areas but if we can continue to gain interest from those parts of the country then I think results will follow. Add in the fact that Ohio is on top of the world right now, so we will only continue to get MORE of the top players from the Buckeye state as we are trending up. Your thoughts/conclusions based on the numbers above?

You're absolutely correct, but instead of saying "Charts They are your friend, maybe you could show how its done. Being Helpful is a good thing usually.

Not trying to criticize.

the glory years had different hot beds. some were the same like Ohio and Pennsylvania, but now most the southern and western states are just as good.

This is a crazy idea but I think a lot of people who are new to posting on the site could use some type of live one-hour webinar on how to create charts, do links, other features to enhance the quality of their posts.  Sure I can see people saying go google it, but this could also be a way to help Mgoblog build its brand and fanbase, and help those who want to contribute to the site put out a better product, which in turns make the site more readable for everyone. .

The rough distribution of players has shift for Michigan over the years.

I did a diary about two years ago or so on the geogrpahic shift, and what I found is that going back to the 1960s, you had something like over half of the rosters typically being from Michigan and close to another thirty percent coming from Ohio and Illinois. The remaining 20% was a smattering of various states (Pennsylvania and Indiana figuring prominently in the "smattering").

By the 1980s and 1990s, you're still getting about 30% or so of your roster from Michigan most years, but as expected, Texas, Florida, California and a couple others are showing up significantly as well. The satellite camps were in places that were already hotbeds of talent a couple decades ago. To some extent, Michigan's roster mirrored the national talent shift going on at the time.

Only 3 from PA is insane.... I remember when that was a hot bed of talent for us and we would go in there and take some of the top players (Marlin, Henne, etc)... I think it all changed after Justin King

I understand why Penn State wanted to come into the Big 10 but one of the worse results from that is that it really laid bare those recruiting territories of Pennsylvania to Michigan and Ohio State...sure, of course, some Pennsylvania players may go elsewhere from time to time (e.g. Joe Namath) but from a recruiting standpoint, I never thought that it was necessarily the best of moves for PSU (OTOH, I think that Penn State had gone Big East, the Big East would still be a viable sports conference)

Based on the performance the past few years this mix should end.  We need a better mix of states.

Or it's all due to coaching.
