2013 Texas TE Durham Smythe to Visit

Submitted by icefins26 on

In an attempt to up morale on the board, it sounds like 2013 TE Durham Smythe will be visiting on the 25th of January according to Rivals and ESPN.  ESPN actually has us in his final 3 visits with Stanford and Oregon.

This brings up the question:  will Funchess possibly be moving to WR?  Or does this provide Borges with more jumbo TE sets?

Kid has an impressive offer list with Miami (YTM), Florida, Georgia, Texas, Texas A&M, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Stanford and Oregon having offered.

He is a 3-star on Rivals and a 4-star on both ESPN and Scout.

Does anybody else get the feeling that our offense is shaping up to mimic Stanford's style? I'm not saying it's good or bad, but it seems like that is where we are headed. A mauling, multi-TE, downhill, playaction style offense.

... as Stanford is equal (at least) academically, their football team has been better than ours the last five years, and weather is never going to be a good point for us. That's before considering things that weather makes possible like all-year outdoor fun with scantily-clad people-of-appropriate-gender :)

With added bulk he will be an every down TE that can be used in multiple sets including split out as a WR. He should be one of Devin's main targets next season.
Depth is still needed at TE and I'm sure the staff would like to redshirt Hill at the minimum.

For the WR vs TE argument, don't knock the TE.  If you can field a pair of truly elite TEs, you will often destroy everything in your path.  On one play the TEs are mauling a pair of LBs or whatever happens to be on their side of the field, exploiting the fact they're much at run blocking than the LBs are at block shedding.  That means that the first unblocked person your pulling guard and RB (or mobile QB) hits will be some safety.  The very next play you can exploit the fact your TE has massive hands and enough body control to out jump the LB.

Athletic guys that can block in space and pull the ball down in traffic on the next play open up options.  While a WR can be good at run blocking, they likely weigh less than the bigger LBs. Whereas big TEs will  outmass the TE and have a better reach due to their height.
