Michigan officially announced the release of the schedule, including the talked about San DIego State game. Couple Notes

  • 8 home games, all 4 non-conference in month of September at home
  • bye week after non-conference before opening at Wisconsin on Oct. 8th
  • 3 November home games including Minnesota, Illinois, and Ohio State
  • OSU game to be played after Thanksgiving FWIW.

...this is a case of "what's past is prologue":

  • Michigan will play three November home games for the first time since 1991 when the Wolverines defeated Purdue, Northwestern and Ohio State at the Big House en route to an 8-0 conference record and the outright Big Ten title.

Hopefully this is only partially a case of "what's past is prologue" (victories - a resounding yes; the rest of the season - an emphatic no):

  • The Wolverines open the season with the same three home games as they played in 2009: Western Michigan, Notre Dame and Eastern Michigan.

I think the reason for the after Thanksgiving game is a simple lack of Saturdays.  Michigan doesn't have a bye week and Thanksgiving is early in 2011.

Wisconsin and we are on the way to an end-of-season showdown with the Sweater Vests.

I know Wisconsin is tough this year; is it a team full of seniors, off to graze on gravy-covered fries and cheese curds after the 10-11 season?

If winning and money are everything, I guess this is great.  But as a season ticket holder, this is just one more forgettable game that will only matter to anyone if we lose.  To be honest, SDSU is not the problem.  It is the MAC.  Michigan should be able to come up with a schedule that does not include playing two MAC teams every year.

You have already given us night games (thank you, thank you, thank you) and rumors are that new mega scoreboards are in the works.  I have one more idea that I would like you to consider.  Instead of playing two MAC teams in the same year, maybe we could play one game against a MAC team and the second against Army.  We could either play Army every year (the way ND plays Navy) or we could at least work Army into the schedule every few years.  Army is a storied program with tons of tradition (sound familiar?) and we are just as likely to beat Army as we are most teams in the MAC. It would be very cool to see Army at the Big House.  And if we have to give them a return game, do what ND is doing this year and schedule it at Yankee Stadium.  You want the NE media market?  Michigan against Army every few years with an occasional game at Yankee Stadium is a pretty good start.

I see that schedule and I see the talent/experience we will have on hand in 2011 and then I look into the future and foresee double-digit wins. Make it happen Happy Michigan Football Loving Gods!

I am disappointed with the addition of San Diego State. I miss the old days, back in the late 80's and early 90's, when Michigan regularly scheduled top flight non-conference opponents.  85 thru 95, here is a list of some of our non-conference opponents.  Notre Dame, Boston College, MIami Fla, Florida State, Colorado, Maryland, UCLA, South Carolina.  We used to regularly play two really good non-conference opponents.

Many fans may be happy with that schedule, because scheduling easy makes good seasons more likely, but unless you make it to the NC game, going undefeated in the non-conference isn't as important to me as seeing interested match ups and good games, and does not prepare the team as well to compete for the one prize that is winnable on the field, the big ten championship.

Last year, even if we went undefeated, we still more than likely would not have played for the national championship.  I understand that part of the reason for all the cup cake games is the gate revenue for the University, but as a fan it's still disappionting, and though I am not certain, I expect a team like Boise State or TCU would love an opportuntiy for a home and home with Michigan.

I also miss the days when the season didn't start until after labor day.  I enjoy watching football more when the weather is bad, probably becuase I normally watch it on TV.
