1986 Michigan @ Indiana highlights

Memorial Stadium press box footage of the 1986 Indiana game. I don't believe this game was broadcast on TV.

The game is joined several minutes into the first quarter so Michigan's first TD is missing.  According to MGoBlue.com, it was a QB sneak by Harbaugh.

Harbaugh's stats in this game: 16/24 for 300 yards and a touchdown.

Option pitch by Harbaugh 15 yards downfiled for the 2nd TD. Nice, heads up play!

Jimmy had pretty good pocket presence.  He kept his eyes downfield but always knew where the safety valve receiver was.  His passes were pretty accurate and very catchable.  He did have a bit of Devin Gardner's yakitty-sax scrambling ability, but in this case he always came out the other side and found a receiver.

Thanks for the video find!

Interesting story:

That was the first regular season game I made the travel squad.  I must have been a late addition because they didn't even have my name on the back of my jersey.   I roomed with Mike Teeter that night.

The game set up perfectly for a guy like me:  Up 35-0 at the half, backups were getting in before halftime, and Coach Mo said to me, "get ready to go in the second half."

Well, the second half didn't play out the way Mo wanted.  He felt like the second stringers weren't performing up to snuff so he kept them in.  The minutes ticked away and before you know it, the IU fans sitting near our bench started on me.  "Hey!  51?  How many points do you have be up by before they put you in?"

It was a humbling experience.  But we kicked their ass, so to hell with them.

The author was Brian Reid and although the book was a thinly veiled recollection of his time at Michigan, most of it was bloated fiction. Probably no surprise that nobody I know has heard from Reid since then. I'm not sure he's still writing either.

EDIT: Weird.  This was a reply to a comment on the app by beedub93 asking about the book "If I don't Six" by Elwood Reid (former Michigan DL Brian Reid).

EDIT 2:  According to Wiki and IMDB, Reid has penned a total of 3 novels and has written and produced a number of television series.

The 86 team had some well known names - in addition to Garland, Andy Moeller at LB, Doug Mallory and Soup Campbell at Safety, Thomas Wilcher getting some carries at TB, Jumbo Elliott, Jamie Morris, etc.

Bo at that time loved to run the wishbone / full house backfield and run over people - he used it a ton that game.  And you had to love the FB's catching passes and getting carries (Bob Perryman, Gerald White) - definitely can see the influence on Harbaugh's current offense.
