16-17 M BB Scholarship Count?

Submitted by caup on
Please help me out here. This is not concern trolling, I honestly don't know: How does M basketball fit under the 13 scholarship limit next year with 4 freshmen coming in? Thanks in advance!

I'm answering off the top of my head so I may be wrong but:

We lose two scholarships with Spike and Caris. We already had one free scholarship so that's 3. The 4th is going to come by someone currently on the roster leaving, which is just natural attrition, or one of the guys taking a prep year.

Wouldn't be so sure. One if the big men will undoubtedly be first because all our big men struggle with fouls. X could be next. I wouldn't be surprised if Kam surpasses Dawkins either. He has more untapped potential than Aubrey so if Dawkins has another stagnant offseason, he could be passed.

I disagree as to the untapped potential.  Dawkins had a very high shooting %, can jump out of the gym, and converted a number of forced opportunities with the shot clock winding down.

Yet after the ND game, I had an "epiphany".  Is something motivational limiting Dawkins play?  Could it be that he knows that he's outta here?  How did he not get that rebound in the ND game?  And in the B1G Tournament against Indiana or NW, there was a defensive rebound in the middle of the paint for which he was outjumped by someone of about his size.  Again, that rebound was his for the taking, but someone with less athletic ability got it.  I dunno.  His play doesn't compute.

Are possibilities of leaving. Wilson was a top100 recruit out of HS, and injuries have plagued him. May go back home to the West Coast. And with 2 bigs coming in this year, Doyle can see his minutes diminish, along with the emergence of Wagner and Donnal this season. Dawkins on the other hand is interesting. The end of his Freshman year we thought he would blossom, but with Duncan and MAAR making themselves stand out this year, I can see him go as well. We will be fine. And I'm VERY excited about Xavier Simpson. Austin Davis improved immensely this year, and there is no way he preps this year IMO. So my guess is Beilein is expecting 2-3 transfers.

Also, can BEILEIN PLEASE OFFER JAMAL CAIN!!! Kid is the the real deal.

I hope JB tells Spike that because of his body, his true future in the game is in coaching.  Then he should offer him a GA position.  Sadly, I think Spike is such a warrior that if he feels remotely decent by summer, he witll try to play.

Maybe Spike can play another season and escape further wrath from what I call "Wolff's law meets Murphy's law," but I hope he doesn't take the risk.

I doubt that'll happen with Albrecht—both because of his condition and because, if he's healthy, it would be an incredibly bad look for Michigan to let another useful player go. I mean, everyone just spent the whole season groaning about how much we miss him and how important seniors are.

That said, I do think it's becoming clear that while player development is a strength of this staff, roster management is not. Regardless of what happens with Albrecht, this is the second straight year that a self-inflicted numbers crunch has affected the quality of roster—first by jettisoning Bielfeldt, then by dropping Langford after Battle committed.

Beilein has to look ahead two years and see the six departures coming.  I don't think Spike takes the place of/forces out any rising sophomores or incoming freshman, unless it's to a prep year.  Beilein has to be concerned about developing enough playing-time ready kids for the 2018-2019 season.

Rising Seniors
Walton
Irvin

Rising Juniors
Donnal (redshirt)
MAAR
Robinson
Doyle
Chatman
Dawkins

Rising Sophomores
Wilson (injury redshirt)
Wagner

Incoming Freshmen
Simpson
Teske
Davis
Watson

Didn't we have this same thread a week ago?  It's basically going to lead to the top 3 results already - somebody saying the logical "somebody is going to prep/leave" and then some people listing names because speculation about the same 2-3 college kids who aren't "good" enough is always productive.
