#10 Field Hockey upsets #1 North Carolina!

UNBELIEVABLE!

After generating virtually nothing all game offensively in a scoreless game, Michigan gets a penalty corner with 50 seconds left.

Time ticked off the clock so the shot would be the last play of regulation and Michigan scored the game-winning goal on a rebound by Emma Way!

Michigan upsets #1 North Carolina with a 1-0 win in Winston-Salem!!

We have only beaten UNC 3 times prior to today (now 4-21 all-time). Our season ended last year against this same team in the NCAA Second Round, by the same score.

Michigan opens the season every year against UNC so they play a least once per season. This our first season opening win since 2002 (also over UNC)

#10 Michigan is now 1-0 on the season, and will take on #7 Wake Forest in a road game to close out the ACC/B1G Challenge.

We upset Notre Dame in soccer... now we upset NC in field hockey. I'm feeling some good karma for this athletics season. Go Blue.

Let me praise them for their talent, preparation, teamwork, perseverence, hard work, coaching, fan support and everything else (including luck)  that went into the collective great starts to their seasons.

Nike has nothing to do with their success.  Who knows, maybe they are 7-0 overall if they all played in nothing but their skivvies?

Field hockey always starts year battling UNC and Wake Forest and for the most part puts up a great fight but doesn't come out on top. By the looks of the play-by-play they controlled a lot of the action and had some great goalie play (nothing new there). This team is going to be very tough again this year!

HUGE WIN! It's been fun watching this program grow to where it can hang (now beat) national powerhouses. New facility has been huge.

Big time W.

Unranked Iowa upset #7 Wake Forest today too. They swap opponents tomorrow to complete the mini-ACC/B1G Challenge in Winston Salem. Nice start for the Fall sports so far and beginning of the Nike Era v.2.

It's weird we have UNC scheduled again mid-season in Chapel Hill?

Michigan is perennially solid, but this was their first win vs. #1 since their 2001 NCAA championship year.
