'Twas The Night Before Signing Day

Submitted by Brandon Brown on

‘Twas the night before signing day and all through The Hall,
not one coach was stirring, nope not at all.
The fax machine primed and serviced with care,
in hopes that LOI’s soon would be there.

The recruits were nestled all snug in their beds,
while visions of The Big House danced in their heads.
Coach Nuss in his pj’s, and Mattison in his cap,
were settling their brains for a short, anxious nap.

When out in the lobby there arose such a clatter,
Coach Manning jumped up to see what was the matter.
The fax machine beeped, surely it is not broke?
They all knew in that moment it was only Coach Hoke.

The letters poured in, his players they came,
He whistled and shouted and called them by name.
Now Peppers, now Furbush, now Maurice R. Ways,
On Jared, on Juwann, on Lawrence, and Chase.

Coach Hoke was excited, but wait something’s wrong.
Two more of his players should be coming along.
Finally he sighed, of course he wasn’t crazy,
letters came through signed Ian and Brady.

Coach Hoke sprung to his office, to his staff gave a wink,
they brewed up some coffee for them all to drink.
The coaches looked charged, excited, and revived,
just in time to focus on Team 135.

and thanks for all of your efforts since you've been here. I hope you're able to tune out/ignore the knuckleheads more easily now.

I dont quite understand all the excitement surrounding signing day these days. Its not like we dont already know where 90% of these players are going. There are a few possible suprises but in all honesty (and not trying to jinx anything here) it is not as if there is much of a chance that any UM commits are going to sign away from Michigan without notice or rumblings beforehand. I know its possible, but it seems as though signing day is more of a fomality these days. I get more excited when I hear a target has set a date he will declare or when we have targets on campus for visits (like The Big House BBQ).

Not trying to ruin the fun though!

Question for BB- I know NSD isn't the grand finale for a class, so when is the final date they can sign?

Excellent work, Brandon Brown!  Thanks for shining the lyrical spotlight on those young men who remain committed to Michigan.  You inspired me to add some wishful lyrical thinking.

  • In Columbus, East Lansing and in Tallahassee,
  • The coaches and players weren’t feeling too classy.
  • They’d lost a recruit whom they’d thought would be there’s.
  • When the young man signed elsewhere, they gave up their prayers.
  • Urban Meyer was livid; Dantonio smirked.
  • Jumbo Fisher was mad – Winston’s pitch hadn’t worked.
  • Despite all their efforts, the kid wasn’t sold
  • On wearing ‘Noles’ colors of garnet and gold.
  • Or the scarlet and grey, or the green and the white,
  • ‘Cause none of those colors ever really felt right.
  • But up in Ann Arbor, the coaches were glad
  • That Malik had respected his mom and his dad.
  • The press conference began. Brady Hoke said, "It’s true!"
  • "McDowell will be wearing the Maize and the Blue!"

But wherever Malik McDowell decides to go, I'd wish him well and hope that he will respect his parents' wishes and focus as much on his course work as he does on his football work.
