My high school, Akron Buchtel, used the Michigan single wing until the late 1950s and usually finished first or second in the Akron City Series. It was fun to watch with a mixture of power plays and mis direction. It was kind of fun to have an offense in which all the quarter back did was open holes in the line or block rushers on pass plays. Not once in my four years in high school years did the quarter back touch the ball. I would also point out that Otto Graham, one of the best  passing quarterbacks in pro ball, played tail back at Northwestern.
