not so many SEC & Big 12 schools. Hell you could even throw in University of Chicago, because someone who's name escapes me now, post that U of Chicago was one hell of a rival 80 some odd yrs ago. GO Blue and Go Big Ten Academics!!

Actually, U of Chicago is part of the Big Ten, academically speaking.  They are part of the Big Ten's academic consortium (meaning they participate in sharing library resources, professorial exchanges, etc.).  So, when talking about Big Ten academic superiority, and some buffoon begs to differ, point out that the Big Ten includes the U of Chicago. They simply chose not to compete athletically in the Big Ten anymore back ~ WWII (they're a Div. III school now, FWIW).

Re: rankings, I think some of it goes simply on reputation, and UM has an outstanding reputation internationally (UM draws in a lot of top-tier internat'l students, as you may have noticed).  I've lived and travelled all over the world the past 20 years, and I have yet to go ANYWHERE where the University of Michigan is not instantly recognized and respected.  Does that really mean we deserve to be #18?  If that's the perception of UM abroad, subjective as it is, then yes.

Though I don't know exactly how these rankings were done, my guess is that it is similar in many respects to USNWR. These are all flawed in my opinion. You simply can't rate an entire school collectively. The only appropriate way to do it is to rank by department. The Gourman report does this, ranking things like department goals, structure of the concentration(s) they provide, amount of opportunities that are provided (i.e. research experience), how well respected the professors are in their field, etc. This in my opinion is the best ranking system that I've seen. They don't care about SAT scores (which are really only an indicator of how much money you make) and they don't rank UM's super awesome business school with other good, but not as outstanding programs at UM.

They don't publish the methodology behind the rankings on the link. It seems a little bit boo-hakey. Some of the ranks are VERY odd. You can't make any conclusions off this, for all we know some columnist sat down and made a list of his favorite schools.

From The Times site:

"The rankings – which are now in their fifth year – are based on surveys of academics and graduate employers about which they consider the best universities in their fields, the ratio of students to academics, the proportion of overseas students and staff at each university, and the number of times research by each university’s academics is quoted in other journals."

So - 1, it's extremely subjective, because no academic type would ever play favorites or have any reason to be anything but totally objective in how they see other schools.

And 2, proportion of overseas students and staff doesn't seem at all useful; at least, it ought to be pretty far down the list.  Kind of a silly thing to have so high up.

Not bashing U-M's spot on the rankings.  Just seems like a really useless methodology.

there was a breakdown in US New and World Report between overall ranking and academic reputation, which sounds a little like what this list is. In 1997 we were ranked #7 for academic reputation in the US despite being I think 20th overall. To be honest, as much as I love football, I think I am more pissed off about our dropoff in academic ranking than athletic. After all, I hold a degree from U of M, not a letterman's jacket. Still nice to know that our reputation is pretty good internationally.

I don't see how Oxford can be ranked ahead of Michigan. Their schedule is weak -- Manchester, Leeds etc. out of conference -- and that should be taken into account for obvious reasons.

Imagine my shock to look over this entire list and not find Michigan State University. And after all these years of my MSU friends telling me about how State is just as good a school as UM and in many ways better, and so on. I realize the rating system is flawed, but not even in the top 200? There must be some kind of mistake...

There hasn't been any dropoff. In fact, the quality of our student body has presumably been getting better and better as our admissions standards have been getting progressively tougher. The reason we're always on the fringe of the top 25 in U.S. News's rankings is almost solely due to one category: "Alumni Giving Rate." Like most public schools, we have a relatively low rate of alumni donations (we're like 150th in the country), and that one criterion drags our overall ranking down considerably (as it does for all of the public schools on U.S. News's list). If you look at their criterion called "Academic Reputation," we're consistently above Northwestern and just a notch beneath the Ivies.

The anti-Michigan?  Notre Dame, which is well beneath us in the academic repuation category, but always ranks among the top 5 schools nationwide in alumni giving rate (and is frequently #1).  That one category saves ND's bacon in these ratings.

this pretty much proves to me how stupid all the geeks are taking over football idea is. Wisconsin, Cal, Texas, Illinois, and Michigan are all better at Vandy in academics (supposedly) and those schools have actual good football teams. Looks like the geeks have already taken over football, nice try vanderbilt
