(week 2) Most Hideous Game of the Week

Submitted by dmgoblue08 on

After receiving a relatively favorable response, TMHGOTW is back, and with a vengeance. I am still up in the air as to whether this is a board subject or a Diary topic. Feedback on the matter is much appreciated.

WEEK ONE OUTCOME:

Most Hideous:
W&M 26 - UVA 14
- How Al Grohl still has a job is beyond me. The guy has been on the hot seat every year for the past decade and he will need another miraculous turnaround to salvage his job. With how bad the ACC proved itself to be last week, he must be strangely confident still that his Wahoo's can win a few games.

WEEK 2 HEAVYWEIGHTS:

Colorado @ Toledo: Yikes. Colorado, fresh off any absolutely dismal effort against Colorado State, takes on a Toledo squad who was thoroughly curb stomped by the running game of Purdue. Coach Hawkins was pretty adamant that this would be the year the Buffs would circle the wagons, but once the THC wears off the AD might be telling Hawkins to "go coach intramurals brotha!" Side note, perhaps Toney Clemons will stop by Ann Arbor to grab some Mister Spots and catch up with his old pals....errrr not.

James Madison @ Maryland: Nothing gets me going like the atmosphere at Chevy Chase Bank Field at Byrd Stadium, especially with JMU in town. If Maryland plays like they did against Cal, JMU could easily pull this one off. I'm no psychic so I won't make a prediction on who will win, however, I do predict enough loose skin for all in attendence.

Illinois State @ Illinois: The fighting Pierre Rembert's march into hideous Champaign to take on Zook and his underachieving all-stars. The Zooker has long proven to be one of the worst in game coaches in all of college football so the outcome of their game vs. Mizzou last weekend shouldn't have come of that big of a surprise...but it did. If the Illini shit the bed against the 1-AA Redbirds the Zooker and Al Grohl may become fishing buddies.

Texas @ Wyoming: See Michigan @ UConn in 20??. (yes I am aware that a BCS school is far different than Wyoming, so please don't bring it up.)

Other Contenders:

Duke @ Army:
Should be plenty of Coach K references to take the focus off the quality of football being played. I am slightly bitter about Army depriving Coach English of victory #1 as HC of EMU.

Iowa @ Iowa State: Iowa is now going to try blocking kickoffs to get better field position. Iowa State still has some of the ugliest uniforms I've ever seen. People may try and call this a rivalry game but no one really cares, and for good reason. The phrases "blue collar" and "hard nosed" are sure to be used in excess by analysts covering the game.

Troy @ Florida: Come on Florida, someone is going to get hurt here.

As always I will look forward to hearing your thoughts on some of week 2's most hideous games. The schedule for week 2 is posted below.

My roomie (who's from Iowa) chose to go to the ISU/Iowa game over Michigan/ND (also his parents made him go)

I'd suggest driving across Kansas (and eastern Colorado) (and Oklahoma is probably worse than both of them). Dear God, at least Nebraska has the occasional tree and/or cow to break up the corn fields. The last time we drove across Kansas, we had the lovely green skies and reports of tornadoes to the south to keep us company.

Also, at the very least Nebraska has a 75 mph speed limit. After putting through Illinois and Iowa at 65, I suggested there be a big sign at the Nebraska border "Welcome to Nebraska, now get the hell out of here."

I met an Iowa grad recently and all he could talk about was how sweet Kinnick Stadium is. I acted like I cared but I think my face said "The Big House is the Parthenon and Kinnick is some peasant domicile." It was my first real meeting with an Iowa grad and I left shaking my head.

Not only is CU going to Toledo, but that game is the one and only game on the Friday night schedule. Its shocking they cant find a better game for national TV.

Colorado probably got a 2 or 3 for 1. The non-BCS programs are really pushing this sort of thing. This is why Texas is playing at Wyoming.

MSU has set up to play EMU/CMU/WMU over like the next 15(or 10) year in a rotating basis. Each is also getting one home game against MSU. Can you imagine the hype at these schools for playing MSU at home!

This is why the number of FCS games have gone up for everyone. Most MAC/WAC/MWC/CUSA teams are demanding at least one return trip. So instead teams are scheduling Delaware State so they can keep their 7 or 8 home games.

It is going to be harder going forward for Michigan to maintain an 8 game home schedule. Personally I would like to see a maximum of 7 home games per team.

Rutgers looked somewhat overclassed last week at home against defending Big East Champ Cincy. But they'll look like world beaters this week when Howard comes to town.

Yep, Howard, 1-AA team ranked 231st in Sagarin Div 1 & 1-AA ratings

Edit: I forgot to add there's more red in that stadium than I ever knew existed. I don't like red ( except in hockey. Go Wings! )

I watched an FCS game last week instead of the South Carolina/NC State game. It was one of the better games I saw over the weekend. It was then #2 Minnesota-Duluth hosting then #9 Central Washington.

Glad to see they didn't make week one's list.

GVSU played at (then) #11 West Texas A&M on August 26th (wicked early first game), winning 37-23; unfortunately it was only televised in the GR area on ABC.

Side note: GVSU beat U of Indianapolis last Saturday (9/5) to win its 44th straight regular season game. And it's not like the conference the Lakers play in is GV and then a bunch of shit - the GLIAC generally has 3-5 teams ranked in the top 25 (currently 3).

I am a little biased toward GV, having graduated from there.

This is one of my favorite weekly discussions. There are a ton of options this week - Duke @Army, Morgan State @Arkon, Ohio @North Texas, Hawaii @Wazzou and Prairie View A&M @NM State come to mind for the quality (lack of) of the opponents.

Aesthetically speaking, anytime Wyoming steps on the field, you know it's gonna get ugly. Purdue should be wearing the away whites @Autzen, but I do wonder what space-suit the Ducks are going to come out in. This game has to rate up there too.

But there are few teams that make my blood boil like USC and OSU. This is one of those games that Wolverine fans say "Can't [Insert nefarious character here] just win?" My vote is on this one.
