TVH Weekly: Game Week, Visits, UNC Fallout

Submitted by TomVH on

Jack Tabb

6'4", 230 lbs.

Tight End

Red Bank, New Jersey

Michigan obviously wants a tight end in this class as they've gone after, and missed on, a few so far. Tabb has already taken an unofficial to Michigan, and is contemplating taking an official this weekend for the UConn game.

I'm going to try to make it up there, because that would be perfect timing for a first official. I really like Michigan, so we'll see.

I should know if that's 100% by the end of the day today (Monday) if he's coming. The reason this is such a big deal is because Jack wants to make his final decision in the next few weeks. I would go as far to guess that it may be North Carolina and Michigan at the top. With all the NCAA investigations looming at UNC, this visit could swing things in favor of Michigan.  That would be a decently big pickup; Tabb has offers from two dozen BCS schools.

Marquise Williams

6'3", 218 lbs.

Quarterback

Charlotte, North Carolina

Also in the North Carolina NCAA scandal benefiting Michigan, we move to Marquise Williams. Though he's a UNC commit, Williams had always stated that he would take his official visit to Michigan and possibly some other schools. That is still the case, and the NCAA snooping around Chapel Hill aren't helping any:

I don't want anyone to think I'm not committed to North Carolina still, because I am. I'm just still looking at everybody, and seeing what's out there. You never know what could happen. I'm coming up to Michigan on October 9th, that's the Michigan State game, that's when I'll be there.

He wanted to make sure that everyone knew he was still committed, but he wasn't happy about the looming investigation. He was in contact with Coach Gibson a few days ago, and said he still plans on keeping in touch with him. Also, in his first game he threw for 341 yards and 7 TD's while his team won 61-0. It was against a bad team, but still noteworthy.

Daren Kitchen

6'1", 175 lbs.

Cornerback

Houma, Louisiana

The latest on Daren is that he sent his first game film to three of the Michigan coaches, and they loved it. He had 3 pass break ups, a field goal block, and an INT for a TD. He says (I know he's said this before) that the Michigan offer is now his.

He's coming up for the UConn game on an official visit, as well. I don't know if the offer is officially official, but we should know by Friday if it is. If so, a commit is expected in short order.

Demetrius Hart

5'8", 190

Running Back

Orlando, Florida

If you didn't originally see this thread, then I'll bring you up to speed. Demetrius Hart (as of now) is not coming to the UConn game. There was some paperwork missing from his clearinghouse info, and he can't take an official visit until it's processed. [UPDATE: Hart's visit is seemingly on as of now.]

I spoke with Demetrius' mother today to see what the mix up was. She said that as of today they won't be coming to the U Conn game, and that Demetrius was going to take an unofficial visit to Auburn. She was told that the paperwork that needed to go through would take two weeks to get processed. It seems like they're trying to expedite the process, or figure out what needs to get done, but she wasn't optimistic that they would be able to.

I'm supposed to get a hold of her tomorrow to find out if they were able to work around it, and still make it up this weekend. Like I said, she didn't sound optimistic. We'll see what happens. 2012 QB Nick Patti, Demetrius' teammate, will still be coming. I'm not going to comment on if any of their other teammates will be there, because there's a possibility that teammate doesn't want it reported either way. I have a headache from this already. We'll see what happens, it looks like it could go either way.

Extra:

  • The extensive UConn visitor list is here. Anthony Zettel recently decided that he'll be at the game. He's not 100% sure, but leaning towards going.

Good work as always Tom.  Thanks for the updates. Tabb would be a solid pick up for this class, add a couple years in the weight room and he could be a monster. GO BLUE

...if you are taking visits to other schools when you have given a verbal, you aren't committed at all.

As for the game on Saturday, which I will miss because of work damn it, UM needs to show just how cleanly a Wolverine can tear a Huskie a new ahole.

not happy at all about this Dee hart info.  I am 100% hoping that he will end up here, but this seems kinda sketchy that he suddenly (after forever talking about the UCONN game) won't be able to come, and instead will be going to Auburn.  I hope to God that RR sets him and his mom straight, but I have to admit, this makes me a bit nervous.  I guess only time will tell?

After the fiasco with other recruits not qualifying, are we on another "snipe hunt" for a great athlete who will not make it because of academics?

So a HS kid has to file paperwork with the NCAA or the school in order to take an official?

Jeebus, the NCAA makes the IRS look like a model of simplicity and clarity.

The NCAA is nuts, but I'd assume that part of that process is getting into the system and getting some sort of identification numbers and such.

The schools probably then have to make the NCAA aware, or at least document locally who is receiving the official visits.  To make sure a kid doesn't get more than 5.

If it was just honor system.... we all know how that would go.

...NCAA Div-1 Manual, a prospective student-athlete must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center (the Clearinghouse) and provide a standardized test score and a transcript to be eligible to take official visits.  Since it's hard to believe that Dee Hart hasn't established his account with the Clearinghouse, I have to assume that he thought he had submitted these two items but one or the other didn't make it.  Hopefully it's as simple as his guidance counselor providing the official transcript or Hart reauthorizing the release of his standardized test scores.  Seems like if this is fixed today or tomorrow, there's still time for Michigan to make his travel arrangements.  I guess we'll know soon enough after TomVH has his conversation with Dee's mom.

13.6.3 Requirements for Official Visit. The following requirements must be met before an institution may provide an official visit to a prospective student-athlete: (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)

(a)  A high school or preparatory school prospective student-athlete must present the institution with a score from a PSAT, SAT, PLAN or ACT taken on a national testing date under national testing conditions, except that a state-administered ACT may be used to meet the requirement. The score must be presented through a testing agency document, on a high school or preparatory school academic transcript (official or unofficial) or through the use of the applicable testing agency’s automated-voice system. An international prospective student-athlete who requires a special administration of the PSAT, SAT, PLAN or ACT may present such a score upon the approval of the Academics Cabinet or the Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee; (Revised: 11/1/07 effective 8/1/08)

(b)  A prospective student-athlete must present this institution with a high school (or college) academic transcript;

(c)   A high school or preparatory school prospective student-athlete must register with the NCAA Eligibility Center; and (Revised: 5/9/07)

(d)  A high school or preparatory school prospective student-athlete must be placed on the institution’s institutional request list (IRL) with the NCAA Eligibility Center. (Revised: 5/9/07)

13.6.3.1 NCAA Eligibility Center. A prospective student-athlete’s fulfillment of these academic requirements may be certified by the NCAA Eligibility Center approved by the Executive Committee. (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07)

13.6.3.2 Eligibility Ramifications. Violations of this bylaw shall be considered institutional violations per Constitution 2.8.1; however, they shall not affect the prospective student-athlete’s eligibility. (Adopted: 4/26/07 effective 8/1/07

Hart will definitely be visiting Michigan at some point.  We still have a pretty good list of recruits visiting to focus on (especially if Zettel makes it).  Besides, I'm sure Patti will be sending his teamate all kinds of messages about what he is missing.  Get the paperwork in order D.  We'll keep the light on for ya when you're ready.

things are officially starting to sound official with the official recruitment of this Kitchen kid.  At least, according to team officials.  Unofficially.

If Hart doesn't make it, its good that one or two of Hart's teammates are coming, he will get to hear first hand about the amazing experience had watching M beat UConn in AA.
