TomVH: Visitors for the Week of March 28th

Submitted by TomVH on

There are going to be visitors all week, not just the weekend so I figured I would post this now. You can take a look at the visitors from last weekend here. As always there will be names added and dropped as plans change. Here's who I have confirmed so far.

  • Tuesday: Kentucky QB Zeke Pike (6'5", 220 lbs). Offers from everywhere and will be one of the top quarterbacks in this class. I confirmed with him that he will be in on Tuesday.
  • Tuesday: Ohio LB Kaleb Ringer (6'0", 220 lbs). Visiting Michigan again. Announcing on the 15th.
  • Not coming anymore: Indiana TE/DE Pierre Aka (6'4", 250 lbs). He was supposed to make it in last weekend but had to reschedule. He's hoping for an offer, and if he gets it there's a chance he could pull the trigger.
  • Saturday: Ohio QB Austin Appleby (6'5", 228 lbs). Took a visit to Florida this past weekend and recently took a trip to U Conn as well. Also still hoping for an offer. I think he will eventually get one depending on how things play out with the other qb prospects.
  • Saturday: Ohio QB Maty Mauk (6'2", 185 lbs). Does have a Michigan offer, and seems to be impressed with the new Michigan coaches. This visit could help Michigan move along in the process.

Not everyone has over 100 offers out right now. Oregon has only offered around 12 kids I think. With the new rule about written offers some programs haven't gotten as many offers out yet.

Don't take the lack of offers, especially with Appleby, as a sign of their talent.

Obviously we are not one of them as you just posted about an offer going out to 2013 QB Shane Morris not to mention 130+ offers for 2012.  I'll have to take your word for it on Appleby as he isn't ranked by any of the recruiting services and the two big schools he camped at (OSU, Florida) didn't offer.

played college football and have coached for my kids at the youth level.  Would love to coach HS, but don't have the time.

There are other QBs I prefer and we have already offered Morris for 2013. I'm not saying Appleby is bad just that there are other prospects who I would prefer.  He would be third on the list of QBs coming in this week.  We settled for a QB last year and I don't want to settle again this year even though it could be irrelevant if Devin is granted his medical RS.

Watching highlight film is a waste of time as everyone is made to look good.  That is why you call it "highlight" film.  Unless you have game film, preferably from a quality opponent, there is no sense in it.  My local HS produced Michigan's leading HS rusher last year and his highlight film would look awfully good to most.  He's 5'10" 195 lbs and runs a 4.95.

Personally, I couldn't care less about stars.  I prefer players that come from talent producing states that show potential for growth and improvement.  Our last two unanimous 5 star recruits from the state of Michigan, Kevin Grady and BWC, are prime examples of the hype train.  Both were physically dominate and played in a state not known for producing top notch high school talent.  BWC still has time to live up to his billing, but will he ever break his habit of standing up and trying to find the ball carrier.  It worked great in HS where he was bigger and stronger than everyone else, but not so much so in college.

have you seen game film on the players you prefer..If neither who are you to say you prefer one recruit over another?   I never mentioned highlight film, there is a reason you coach at the oranges and juicebox league and we have coaches at UM.   All I'm saying is let the process play out, no need negging a prospect especially when we don't know the entire recruiting situation.   You contradicted yourself with your own arguement and to say we "settled" with Bellamy when he hasn't even stepped on the field yet tells me your intelligence on this issue.    Relax , its not even April yet,

He had offers from 3 MAC schools. Wisconsin came in late as his first FBS offer (Kentucky tried SUPER late). That's it. Those were all his offers. 5 years later, he wins the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm award and finishes #6 in the country in passer efficiency running an offense very similar to what Hoke/Borges plan on installing. Don't get too caught up in stars and offer lists. Give the kids a chance.

Every time I see Pierre Aka's name I read it as Pierre A.K.A. and think I will read a nickname after that, and every time I'm dissapointed.

I wonder what will go through Austin and Maty's mind if they see each other (both being QBs from Ohio) on Saturday. Will they be competitive with each other, discouraged, friendly, or something else?

...I was uncomfortable with the grammar nazi tendencies of the board.  The egalitarian nature of the whole thing seemed mean and unnecessary.  I no longer feel that way.  This garbage is becoming too common.  Posts like this are the reason I don't care what any poster on Rivals or MLive has to say.  I don't read that crap because it is nearly impossible to take seriously.  If that is mean, so what.  I love this place, and I really really do not want it to erode into a world where punctuation, capitalization, spelling have no rules.

Deferring to TomVH and the other recruiting experts but is it safe to assume that once we get one QB commitment we are done recruiting this slot? To me it would appear to be a race for one of these recruits to commit to Michigan soon forcing the others to look elsewhere. Would be great to get Pike to commit first.

Yes, probably, which is why guys like Appleby are sitting around with their Chicken Fajita Roll-Ups and no Michigan offer.  Not that he's a bad player, but you don't want a guy like Appleby to accept and then have to either say no to Pike if he wants in or take 2 QBs when you really don't have room in a small class for them.

This is why a lot of second tier QBs wait to commit or end up decommitting a lot because a lot of them get their good offers later in the game once a school has given up on their top choices.  Almost any other position you're willing to take one extra if you need to, and even if you only take one, there's less of a discrepancy between the top and the next level.  If you miss out on your top TE, it's not as big of a deal as your top QB.
