TomVH: Dispelling Craig Roh Transfer Rumors

Submitted by TomVH on

There has been a rumor running around that Craig Roh has been unhappy, and was looking to transfer. He loves Michigan, and doesn't want to transfer. I spoke with someone I trust about this, and they told me that the rumor is not true. My source told me that Craig has been concerned with his position switch to linebacker, and believes he is much more effective as a defensive end.

Craig actually vocalized his concern about his position to the coaches after the Penn State game, and my source says that he has been playing much more on the defensive line during practice this week.

I just wanted to make sure anyone that heard this rumor knew that it wasn't true, and that Craig isn't transferring. I am glad that he vocalized his concern, because I think it's safe to say that most of the fan base feels the same way. We'll see how it affects anything going forward, or if there are any changes made scheme wise for the rest of the season. I hope everyone knows by now that I wouldn't post this if I thought it to be a rumor, or that I would tell you if it was.

You beat me too it.

After reading the post today about "this isn't a stack" and Roh's feelings about his position, it makes me wonder just exactly what the hell is going on in the offices inside Schembechler Hall???

As a coach myself, it's no fun being second guessed and critiqued all the time.  I've also found it proportional that the less someone knows about the game, the bigger the pain in the ass they are.  So out of professional courtesy so to speak, I temper my enthusiasm when contemplating addressing such issues.

But is sure seems like the fans have a greater grasp of what's going on than the defensive staff.

+15,000 if i could.  Why do Roh, age 20, and according to the Def. UFR for PSU, Demens, age 20, have to correct the coaches about both their 'position on the field' and their overall position on the field.

Fuck - maybe the coaches listen and they do something right this weekend.  If so, I'm all for hearing what JT Floyd thinks he should be doing.

EDIT: I never checked their ages, so save the interweb space with correcting me.  You get the point.

My question:

What the heck has happened to Brandon Herron? His play allowed Roh to play as a DE. Herron gets injured against Notre Dame, is now off the injury report, and ???????????

Captain Obvious

That's pretty disturbing.

Tom, I know you are in regular contact with some of the current players/parents.  Do you have any additional insight as to what is going on on the defensive side of the ball?  If the information is sensitive for some reason, can you give us one of your "yeah, you'll find out later" vague answers?

Ultimate Quizmaster

Yeah I don't know what's going on with Herron. By all accounts he should be starting for us. All I know is our current defensive setup is terrible, and something has to change. If RR is indeed being inflexible about the D for whatever reason, then I don't know what the F to do.

Having the name  "Roh" and word "transfer" in a sentence is disturbing.  From the pressers, obviously the defensive players are not pleased or happy with their performance.  But, if they are expressing concern with their position or maybe the scheme, something is wrong on a deeper level.  Granted, there are injuries and freshman playing so some shifting has to happen but damn we are 8 games into the season.  Some of these things should have been figured out earlier.

When positive posts like Tom's turn into yet another witch hunt thread, it tells me there are a lot more problems with impatient fans than there are with the team.  At least the team has room for growth.

So you are clearly happy then with the fact that our 20 year old kids have to go to the grown men coaching the team to tell them where they are best utilized?

I personally am not cool with that.

is the one being stubborn and forcing this shit scheme on GERG. What does that mean if Brandon brings him back? I am a huge RR fan, but i am very upset wont hire a good DC and let that DC hire is own assistants. RR its time to let your WVU go! Cmon coach Bedford come home to AA!

it seems rich sort of forced this defense on coach robinson. it's a lot to ask a coach to run a defense he's never coached to a defense that isn't very good in the first place. rich hired shafer and robinson. he has to take some of the blame for the inept defense.

Who played under LC and RR. While he stopped short of disparaging RR he said RR's biggest problem is that everything has to be his way. He is incredibly stubborn and frequently overrules his staff. The 3-3-5 is his idea and he has insisted upon its use. He also said a lot of veterans were upset with RR for installing his guys into positions that already had firmly established players (McGuffie, Koger were two examples).

I'm glad he's not transferring. Obviously seems like a great kid with near unlimited potential.

It's too bad the LB switch didn't work out for him. Maybe it's more a scheme thing than him just not being that good at the LB position, it's hard to say. I was optimistic about the change when it happened. Being able to be an excellent rush LB in a 3-4/3-3-5 D is a very important position. It's one of these most coveted things in the NFL at this point, and if Michigan's D, be it a 3-3-5 or 3-4 can start producing guys in that spot into the NFL, that'll be a huge recruitment tool.

Roh isn't going to be that guy to start that here, but that's fine. Anything we can do to get him in the best position possible to make plays is going to have to be a good thing.

...but of COURSE he's thinking about transferring.  who wouldn't, with a defensive coaching staff that is constantly asking people to do things that fall outside of their skill sets?  craig roh is a terrific edge pass rusher, so let's ask him to play in space.

fucking a.  would a transfer surprise anyone?  not me.

When Greg Robinson was Head Coach and Co-Defensive Coordinator at Syracuse, defenses with his players, his assistants and his schemes ranked in the bottom 20 of all FBS schools during his final three seasons there.  He had a fourth-string running back named Doug Hogue who had been a very good RB and linebacker during his high school career.  While Robinson played an undersized MLB named Mike Mele (who started at MLB for UMass against Michigan this season), Doug Hogue watched from the sidelines.

After Robinson was fired and Scott Shafer became Syracuse's Defensive Coordinator following the 2008 season, Doug Hogue was switched to linebacker.  For his performance this season in Syracuse's win over West Virginia, Hogue was chosen as the Walter Camp Foundation's National Defensive Player of the Week.   In 2009, for his performance in Syracuse's win over Rutgers, Hogue also was named as the Walter Camp Foundation's National Defensive Player of the Week.

Before this season started, it was reasonable to expect that Craig Roh's performance as a freshman at Michigan would have led to significant improvement in his play this year.  He was considered to be a key part of what was going to be a strong foundation for the Michigan defense for three seasons. Any speculation and rumors about his possible transfer may be no more legitimate than claims that it will cost $200 million a day for President Obama to spend five days in India this month.  But it would be nice to think that next season, while working for a different Defensive Coordinator, Craig Roh might be earning a Walter Camp Foundation award as National Defensive Player of the Week -- for Michigan.

#1). Going into the Iowa game, it was no longer possible to ignore the consistently horrible performance of LB Obi Ezeh, and it was announced that Kenny Demens was going to start. Demens immediately makes the first two tackles on defense, and shortly after that he's out of the game, Ezeh is back in, and we promptly give up a big play. RR notices what's happened, storms toward GR yelling and screaming, and LB Demens goes right back in.

#2). Chatster's account of how LB Doug Hogue was misused at Syracuse.

#3). LB Demens has to ask the defensive coaching staff to move back from the LOS.

#4). Craig Roh, whose assignment at LB has been the subject of much criticism by a number of MGoBloggers, including some who are currently coaches, asks to be put back at his more natural position on the DL.

#5). Greg Robinson coaches the linebackers.

Items #1 and #2 indicate to me that it's not RR who is unable to recognize LB talent. Items #4 and #5 indicated that the linebacker coach not only does not recognize who and who does not have ability at that position, he also doesn't know how to position them on the field, either.

I am not trying to state that RR is not responsible for the defense; on the contrary, he's ultimately 100% responsible as head coach, since he's hired all of the defensive assistants including Robinson. Even the most enthusiastic RR supporters would be denying reality if they tried to assert that RR hasn't done a poor job in his selection of the defensive staff, considering Shafer, Hopson, and now Robinson.

However, the evidence points much more directly to Robinson than it does to RR when it comes to talent evaluation and in-game deployment of linebackers.

FWIW, it's not rare for a player to make suggestions at halftime.  They're out on the field and they generally know what's hurting them/preventing them from making certain plays.  I played for a successful high school program and players came into halftime with suggestions frequently.  And players come to us at halftime with suggestions now, too.

I really don't think it's a big deal that Demens had to ask to move back another yard or two.  It might have something to do with the fact that Patterson/Sagesse were getting blown off the ball, whereas Mike Martin's presence would have allowed to him to play only 2 or 3 yards deep.

the 3-3-5, GERG, The Stack, WTFeva.is an Epic Fail.  Can the brain trust in Schembechler Hall get their collective heads out of their arses and let best players do what they do best.  Even I know Roh is a liability at LB.  He is a rushing DE.  Come On!  Blitz someone NOW!

If someone's got nothing better to do and can do some searching (I may have read this on the Rivals site), there was an exceptionally prescient and bone-chilling quote from Craig Roh over the summer.  Roh was asked about his new responsibilities in the revamped defense, and he responded as follows (this isn't 100% verbatim, but it's awfully close, because it stuck in my head so firmly):

"There's more thinking involved.  The main thing is to read and react, so I can't be as aggressive, so that's going to take some getting used to."

I remember reading that and sinking feeling that came with it.  *sigh*

Phew! This defense and this team in general need Roh. He is a true Michigan Man, and I know he will grow to be a terrific leader.

However, I am concerned that the players have to be the one to point out such inefficiencies. This is just another example of Gerg's inability to coach or do much of anything.

Not only are you pissing the talented players on the team off but you are also killing the ability to get talented players for the future.

I can just see Dantonio and Tressel saying to the recruits "Son, I cant explain what the 335 is but I see that there defense is ranked 120th in the NCAA.  We (insert school) play the 4-3 and smash the other team in the face.  That other school (insert Michigan) plays that sissy defense.  Don't you want to play in the pros one day?"

Ugh I can't stand it.

Unless it's used in spot duty to confuse a QB on the quick stuff, the 3-3-5 just doesn't seem to generate any pressure, let alone turnovers.

Think for a second what it would look like if just HALF of our defensive stands caused a turnover, a 3-and-out, or in anyway kept the opponent from scoring.  We need something that's aggressive, not passive.  Instead, we're running a scout team at them and employing even more players at a position that's been decimated by injury and attrition, all in the name of "protecting" said position.

and the weekly news coming from it is a train wreck. Everyone knows the staff is going to be gone so why hesitate. It wont affect recruiting, not negatively anyway, just fire them all and lets see what pans out. At least we'd know they're taking a step in the right direction.

briangoblue

November 5th, 2010 at 12:38 PM ^

affect recruiting negatively? I'm all for brooming the entire defensive staff but it's a delicate balance to do so and maintain the recruits that built relationships with the likes of Tony Gibson. Fortunately, from my understanding GERG doesn't do a lot of recruiting, but Gibson does and I don't want to lose any of the guys we do have in the fold before their signature hits the paper. Obviously, the entire program has its work cut out when it comes to turning around the defense.

roh's right.  but i hope his "position change" doesn't require another position change wherein we have someone who doesn't know his role.  like cam gordon moving up last week.

People are worried about a transition to a new coach. Bah. They will HAVE to transition on defense no matter what. This is ridiculous. The players seem to actually know more than the coaches! The fact that, after three years, we are in the position is sickening.

All evidence points us toward another three years of bad defensive coaching. There is no evidence that decisions on the defensive side of the ball will turn positive, is there?  Anyone?  Can you help me find some evidence that the current coaching regime can turn things around defensively?

Everyone on MGoBlog gets it...  The players are starting to show their frustration...  and RichRod is letting the defense drag him down...

Something should be done ASAP with the defensive staff, in time to impact recruiting (which is not looking too good defensively at the moment...)

leaves me with feelings of pride.

Story about Denard, the Zoltan article, and now reading about how Roh is being pro-active about how he can contribute... these are just the most recent examples of kids on this team that are exceptional student athletes.

It's great to be a Wolverine.

It really speaks to the fact that the whole defensive staff needs to go and Rich needs to leave the new DC alone. I blame RR 100% for the defensive woes.

Could this finally mean a switch to a 4-2-5 as the base formation like I've been advocating for a while now?  I don't mind the spur/bandit hybrid safely LB positions, in fact I think it's better than having to rotate different packages in and out constantly, but given the personnel and coaching situation with this team I think a four man front would be more effective at this point.

Sopwith

... I'd just as soon see the inmates running.  Roh, Demens, and probably the other kids seem to know better than their elders how they should be used.

Any top-rated defensive recruit (and his parents, coaches and other advisors) with access to a computer will have no problem researching Greg Robinson's performance as a college coach over four seasons at Syracuse and two seasons in Ann Arbor.  For someone who was hailed by Syracuse as a "defensive guru" when he was hired there to replace Paul Pasqualoni as Head Coach, Greg Robinson has failed to live up to that reputation.

Granted, injuries and defections may be at the core of this Michigan team's defensive woes.  But if lack of talented defensive players is part of Michigan's problem, then I can't imagine that too many highly talented potential recruits this year are saying, "Wow, I've gotta get up to Michigan to play for Greg Robinson.  His defense is awesome!"

At this point in the season, maybe it would not be too crazy to let Mike Martin, Craig Roh, Jordan Kovacs and Troy Woolfolk (who could coach from the coaches' box) devise the defensive game plan.

Aequitas

November 9th, 2010 at 12:05 PM ^

and I won't disagree.  But I will just say that comparing jobs done by someone as a head coach vs as a defensive coordinator are not the same thing.  It would have been better had Robinson come in with the same system and staff used to garner two Super Bowl rings, than to have him come in and run a foreign system with guys that answer to RR, not him.

In other words, I don't blame Shafer and Robinson, solely, for the last three years.  I was in the minority and furious with Rodriguez for, imo, scape-goating Shafer after the first year.  And for those saying, "blah blah - more talent", it was also his first year with those players.

Water under the bridge, but the defensive woes continue to be the weakness of this team without an apparent fix.
