Misery Diary - The Sound of BPONE

Submitted by UMProud on November 26th, 2018 at 8:43 PM

Like most of the Michigan faithful I have been in a deep funk over our ass whooping.  For my own personal catharsis I started to modify the verses to Simon & Garfunkel's "Sound of Silence" but after 2 verses I ran out of energy.  Feel free to add your own verse if you're so inclined.  Would be fun to see what other people come up with.  Obviously if you try and follow the format / cadence of the original verses it makes it easier to sing in your head.

[Verse 1]
Hello BPONE my old friend,
you'll be with me 'til life's end
I had visions of this team winning
Now I realize that I was sinning
And the vision that was planted in my brain...doesn't remain
Within the sound of BPONE

[Verse 2]
In restless dreams Michigan chokes
Coaching looks just like with Hoke
'Neath the banner of the old M Club
They turn their helmets toward the field
When my eyes were stabbed by
The flash of the scoreboard sign
Bucknut score split the night
And touched my soul with BPONE

[Verse 3 through Verse 5]

Thank you, antidaily!  The problem I find with acronyms and other abbreviations is that perhaps due to social-media developments and Twitter's character limits, they're so prevalent that I find myself often having to refer to the Acronym Finder website in order to understand what''s being said.  NTTAWT, amirite?

For many years, it has seemed to me that MGoBlog has been littered with acronyms like BPONE, or some player nicknames and references to events that occurred long ago on the blog that occasionally baffle me.  For example, it took me years to know what YMRMFSPA meant in the MGoBlog recruiting posts until my cursor somehow landed on those letters and a box with the words "you may remember me from such players as" suddenly appeared.

Maybe, if MGoBlog 3.0 ever gets fully repaired, the moderators could add and regularly update to their "Useful Stuff" a glossary of acronyms, player nicknames and blog events from long ago.

I rewatched the first half tonight. Two plays that stood out were the false start on Onwenu on 4th and 2 in plus territory, and the catch and run by Campbell where he covered the width of the field and made practically the entire defense miss  OSU was really good at running the defender into the ref on their first drive. I'll never understand why we don't run crossing routes or wheel routes getting linebackers on our running backs  Everybody sure does it to us.enough.

Oh well. I'm sure by Friday night I'll be ready to rewatch the second half.

While our running game has progressed into a more modern offense this season, much of the passing game remains stuck in "Gentlemen's Duel" mode.

What I mean by that is that most of our pass plays use traditional WCO principles to create spacing and hope that one of our routes wins against coverage.  It is a classic "out-execute" the opponent scheme.  We don't do enough misdirection, picks, slants, or RPOs.  We don't do enough "Match-up" offense where we identify a weakness and exploit it over and over.

Nope.  We're just going to line-up and beat you, because that's what Bo did, and damn it, that's how you play football.

Even the NFL has outgrown that type of passing offense.  Watch the Chiefs.  Or the Eagles.  Or the Rams.  Or the Patriots.  Or the Saints.  There is misdirection, rub routes, RPOs, match-ups, and non-traditional routes being run on nearly every pass play.

Our running game made huge strides under Warinner this season.  The passing game still feels like redcoats vs. revolutionaries.  If this gets fixed this off-season, Michigan will be a juggernaut in 2019.

This is a great analysis and description. It’s weird that we break out RPOs and other cool stuff in random games only to see them shelved in the big game. It fooled Brian into thinking we were going to have a fully operational Death Star offense against tOSU. And then, as you say, we went back to Bo ball instead. I kept thinking repeatedly that the game resembled a typical Rose Bowl loss from the 1980s.

I'd rather make up bpone lyrics with the music of Slayer, like  "Seasons in the Abyss" and we could call it "Seasons in the Bpone".  Frozen eyes stare deep in your bpone mind as you die

Until yesterday, because apparently I'd missed the lecture on acronyms, I didn't know that "BPONE" is the MGoBlog acronym for "Black Pit of Negative Expectations".  I've taken your challenge and tried to follow the rhyme scheme and the rhythm of the original.  With apologies to Simon & Garfunkel and all the MGoBloggers who must be sick of wallowing in reminders of "The Crushing in Columbus":

BPONE’s now a hated “friend”
Until these losses finally end.
Thinking victory was deceiving.
All that’s left are months of sad grieving
While they wonder if there’s anything to gain
From the pain
Within the bounds of BPONE

Poor Brandon Watson left alone
In man-to-man instead of zone.
Had they practiced zone since training camp?
They might’ve needed it to be the champ
And surprise OSU with some flash and a tougher fight.
Were they uptight
Within the bounds of BPONE?

Trailed at halftime by one score.
By some luck it wasn’t more.
Defense needed lots of smart tweaking.
Where was the pressure that they’d need to bring?
Thomas, Hill and Long couldn’t stop them through the air.
Were they scared
Within the bounds of BPONE.

Will Hart’s punt went off too slow.
The Buckeyes’ lead began to grow.
Then Shea hurled a pass that seemed untrue.
In just five minutes they’d become unglued.
Forty-one Nineteen, the scoreboard had to tell.
It told them of the hell of BPONE.

Wolverines are now dismayed
‘Bout the way “The Game” was played,
‘Cause they couldn’t stop the scoring
From increasing ‘til it was soaring.
And so the song of the Muppets
Won’t be played at their locker stalls
Or Schembechler Hall.
Slipped up in the bounds of BPONE.
