Inside the Boxscore: Team 1, Game 1 AD

Submitted by ST3 on

"AD" for After Dave. Once the head coach has been hired, an athletic director, being so far removed from the day-to-day workings of a football team, should not be able to impact the success - or lack thereof - of the football team. A quick check of the boxscore does not show the athletic director's name (though this season I have hinted at it showing his finger prints.*) In fact, it does not even show the coaches' names, which makes this a less than perfect archive since I believe that the coaches do matter. (It does, however, list the officials.) So the boxscore is populated by people who set foot on the field and determine the outcome of the game. Did the resignation of Michigan's athletic director release a dam of pent-up frustration, stress, and ill-will that allowed the football team to perform to their highest potential, or is Indiana just really bad? I'm going to take this opportunity to focus on the positive and leave the rest of the nonsense for later in the season. For now, there's still a chance the team can become bowl eligible, earn another chance to put on the winged helmet and play for Michigan.

Burst of Impetus
* Michigan stopped Indiana on their first possession and responded with a decent drive that ended in a field goal. Michigan's drive was highlighted by a 34 yard Gardner to Darboh completion. On Indiana's next drive, Jake Ryan forced Tevin Coleman to fumble the ball and Bryan Mone was there to recover the ball. Given a short field, Michigan's offense responded, going 27 yards in 6 plays for a touchdown. Down 10-0, Indiana's coach benched his one great player for fumbling, allowing Michigan to extend our lead to 17-0. With Indiana sorely missing their QB, there was little to fear the rest of the way.

Love the Drake
* I thought the story of the running game this year was going to be the battle between Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith. With Green out for the year, and Smith dinged up in the first half, Michigan turned to Drake Johnson. Johnson carried 16 times for 122 yards and two touchdowns. Even subtracting his long run of 32 yards leaves him with 90 yards on 15 carries for an even 6.0 yards per carry. That was a solid performance.
* Smith and Hayes combined for 42 yards on 13 carries against the same Indiana defense, so I'm inclined to be optimistic that we may have stumbled on something positive in the running game. Time will tell.

I'm Having a Hard Time Coming up with Positive Section Headings. It's Been That Kind of Year.
* Devin Gardner completed 22 passes for 220 yards and 2 touchdowns.
* Even though he mostly targeted Darboh and Funchess, eight Michigan players caught passes, including Bo Dever, Joe Kerridge and A.J. Williams.
* Darboh had a career game with 9 receptions for 107 yards and a touchdown.
* Jake Ryan led the defense with 11 tackles, 2.5 TFLs and 2 forced fumbles.
* Michigan recorded 12 TFLs and had two sacks.
* The top four tacklers were all front-seven guys. Wilson and Hill each had 3 tackles. The starting CBs, Taylor and Lewis combined for one tackle.

The Glass is Half Full?
* Indiana did not earn a passing first down. I wonder when the last time was that happened. For the game, Michigan doubled Indiana's first down production, 20 to 10.
* Michigan ran 64 plays, of which, 61 ended in non-negative yards.
* In a near reversal of last week, Michigan more than doubled Indiana in total yardage, 404 to 191.
* Michigan won the time of possession, 33:35 to 26:25. Hey, it matters to Brady, so we'll record it as a positive for this week.
* We had twice as many third down conversions as Indiana, 6 to 3.
* Michigan was perfect in the red zone, going 6 for 6 with four touchdowns, and unlike previous weeks, we actually got there quite often this week.
* For the second week in a row, Michigan scored more points off turnovers than their opponents. This week it was 14-0.

Wow, I'm sorry guys. I'll admit this was far from my finest effort. It's going to take more than a new AD to rescue this program. I tried to put lipstick on this pig, but it's still a pig. On to the next one...

all caveats re level of competition should apply, but he seemed to make better decisions, and seemed to make them quicker.  Very north-south, and made a couple really nice cuts.

Also, with all of the player development criticism, someone is teaching the RBs ball control.  Johnson especially -- watch him cradle the ball securely, then cover it with non-holding hand as he passes through the LOS.  Solid.

Definitely felt like it often. Glad he is gone as he was so devisive and the negative outweighed the positive. It's a win-win as he gets to not be criticized as much and still gets all of his buyout assuming he's retired for real. We get rid of a fairly bad athletic director that again was tearing this fan base apart. Now we can start anew with hopefully far better results and more appreciation for the fans and alumni.

Perhaps You Are Correct
However, all ADs have similar priorities and we may get a similar outcome. The fan base was tearing itself apart, but had a focus in Brandon. Look at the almost 300 posts about a Muggles comment, we are still being jerks to each other. What happens if the interim AD retains Hoke? Or, what if the new AD retains Hoke? Will the healing begin? We are in a very strange place. It would be good for Brian to do a poll to determine what are the actual steps an AD needs to do to correct all of zbranfon's failures. Ticket prices for students and concussion protocols have already been addressed.

Not sure there will be a unified fanbase anytime soon.  In fact, probably the most united the fanbase has been since 2007 was the anti-Brandon fever.  Hatred as a unifying force works only if there continue to be "enemies" worthy of such hatred.  Hoke, of course, is the near term enemy who has a temporary reprieve until the next loss.  Then the torch & pitchfork brigade will return in force.

It was great to see Drake produce and I enjoyed the win. I'm just not excited about the team's prospects for the rest of the season. This was the fewest points Indiana has given up against a Big Ten opponent this season. We had 63 against them last year. Indiana's QB situation has turned them into a terrible team, possibly the worst Big Ten foe we've faced in many years.

Drake did look fantastic, the best looking back sice Denard IMHO (not comparing the two) so being a glass half empty type I wonder if the coaches developed Drake or just completely misunderestimated the RB depth chart

Or maybe not so much 'misread' as 'had certain priorities, regardless of the facts on the ground.' Hoke wants a big bruiser back. Yes, Green and Smith both came in with great recruiting accolades, but they're also the two biggest bodies. And part of the problem with Green has been that, despite his size, he doesn't really run like a power back. Seems like this staff has really wanted to turn him into that, rather than take him as he is. (Which I guess is a moot point now, unfortunately.) Meanwhile, Johnson and Hayes, the smaller, dartier guys, don't fit what Hoke wants to do from a MANBALL philosophical perspective, so they get less play, even though they are both clearly a step ahead of Green and Smith on blitz pickups, and even though Hayes in particular is supposedly a bigger receiving threat as well. Why take a strategic advantage when you can just line up and run over people, right?

Glad the depth chart forced the staff's hand on this one. Though I guess declaring Johnson to have arrived after one game against overmatched Indiana is probably me getting a little ahead of myself here.

It could just be development within a system. I remember when Drake took snaps earlier this season and seemed lost and unproductive, while Green/Smith ran wild. What most fans miss about sports is the importance of time in a system and consistency of that system. Our Seniors this year have no more then 2 years of experience in any one system. It takes 3-5 to fully implement a system successfully where you reap the long term benefits of (a) the players knowing what they are doing and how to react when doing it (b) experienced players teaching it to younger players and (c) recruits specified for that system being picked and developed in that system. It could be that having consistent reps and not having major scheme changes week to week... It finally clicked more for the OLine and clicked for Drake.

Part of me really hopes we somehow keep Nuss next year (no comment on the others, then maybe Mattison). I have seen growth in this group as they get more comfortable in Nuss's system (especially in pass protection/blitz pick up). Knowing the success that he has had at his other stops, I would like to believe that he had some part in developing that success and didn't forget everything he knew about football when he walked into Ann Arbor. Another full off season of development and strength conditioning, we could have a pretty solid Offense, especailly if Funchess comes back.... and I really like the Defensive talent that has been assembled. So close, but yet so far away.

Why did Wilson bench Coleman for so long?  Seemed very strange like there's something going on between them.  The guy has played incredible, normally wouldn't you cut him a little slack for one mistake?

Great work as usual.

It's a game overshadowed by a bunch of external stuff.  You could have basically began and ended the column with "Michigan >> Indiana without a QB".

You posting stuff like this motivates me to follow this team and do the same; comrades in suffering, I guess.
