Film Analysis Ep 8.2 - MSU - Defensive Domination

94 yards.

5-25.

I could have included a TON of plays of the DBs blanketing the WRs on some inaccurate balls, but that got too repetitive. Instead, enjoy clips of the DL demolishing people, Winovich living in the backfield, and Uche racking up some sacks, among some other plays.

8.2.1 - Q1 8:40 - 3rd & 7 - 50 - Uche sack for 11 yards

  • Persistence pays off for Uche around the edge, here. Coverage looks excellent and Winovich forces Lewerke to scramble laterally. Uche is too fast and brings him down.

8.2.2 - Q2 13:32 - 1st & 10 - MSU23 - Ross tackle for 2 yards

  • Clever play design by MSU to try to get the DE & LBs to shift away from the pitch with a play-side guard pull. Doesn’t work, Winovich & Ross show off their speed to limit the play to 2 yards.

8.2.3 - Q2 11:11 - 2nd & 10 - MSU20 - Kinnel TFL 1 yard

  • Excellent job by Hudson to keep outside shoulder free on this jet sweep. Paye shows good technique, working down the LOS and preventing any cutback lane. Kinnel makes the tackle, reading the sweep well.

8.2.4 - Q2 5:00 - 2nd & 4 - MSU26 - Solomon / Gil TFL 1 yard

  • A power run play doomed by 3 Wolverines. Gil rocks back the FB into the hole, Solomon shucks off a double, and Hudson reads his way to the hole. Good job by all 3.

8.2.5 - Q2 1:19 - 2nd & 10 - MSU30 - Uche sack 4 yards

  • Nice little stunt executed by Uche & Paye, which frees up Uche for another sack. Coverage is hard to see, but overall looks solid. Bummer for Felton Davis — dude is gonna be scary.

8.2.6 - Q3 13:33 - 3rd & 20 - UM38 - Paye 1 yard TFL

  • Questionable play-call at best. Winovich blasts the H-back into the backfield, disrupting the speed option entirely. QB tries to find a cutback lane, and Paye finds him as he scrapes down the LOS.

8.2.7 - Q3 6:38 - 1st & 10 - MSU24 - Winovich 2 yard TFL

  • Read option where Winovich makes the RT look absolutely silly. Correct read from Lewerke, but the LB finds a DE in the backfield. Paye ends it with some nice help, as well.

8.2.8 - Q4 1:43 - 2nd & 1 - UM24 - Bush sack 12 yards

  • Strange play-design, looks like a screen to the RB? Regardless, the blitz causes 4 OL to pick up Winovich & Dwumfour. This leaves Bush and Hudson free on the right side. Bush capitalizes.

8.2.9 - Q4 1:28 - 3rd & 13 - UM30 - Dwumfour sack 4 yards

  • Rocky maybe had the slant open, but otherwise coverage here is solid. Dwumfour simply beats the guard and gets Rocky as he steps up in the pocket.

Great videos! I love seeing these. One question:

On Play 8.2.4 (Power play that gets stuffed), I noticed that the pulling guard #75 seems to get stuck by his own line before he can make it to the hole. This wasn't addressed in the video, so I'm wondering if it was part of the play design or if #75 just didn't execute?
