Eat Dinner with Coach Carr, Coach Hoke, Dhani Jones, and Mike Martin
Thank you to Brian for allowing me to post this. I hope this interests the MGoBlog community.
I am a member of a sponsored student organization at Michigan called Appreciate + Reciprocate. We are a group of University of Michigan students that gives back to Ann Arbor and surrounding communities through service and fundraising. All of our fundraising efforts directly benefit the LSA Emergency Student Aid Fund for students in extreme financial crises.
Each year, Appreciate + Reciprocate holds a benefit dinner and silent auction to raise money for the fund. The benefit dinner is open to the public and tickets for this year's dinner are on sale now. Details are located below:

Do you have a link or address or whatever that we could use to donate to the cause without attending the Fundraiser, for those of us who live far away and can't be in A2 for a wednesday night?
Or, we could buy tickets that you could hand out to some students or kids or others who might not be able to afford to attend?

To donate without purchasing tickets, just visit umichappreciate.org. At the top of the page, there is a link to donate.
If you'd like to buy tickets for someone who cannot afford to attend, go through the "Buy Ticket" procedure as you normally would. In the form that says "List the names of your guests..." write "Ticket Donation from ____" or something similar (please make sure to include your name). Appreciate + Reciprocate can then match your ticket donation with students or community members that would otherwise not be able to afford to attend the dinner.

I know right. We should have given him the boot and refused all that money he helped raise for Motts. Having less money to treat sick kids with is totally worth it because we dislike some of his actions regarding football.
Coaching changeover aside, Carr has done for more UMHS, namely Motts, than most others.

Calling for total disassociation is a bit much, but no one can blame another fan for feeling uneasy seeing him around here after the shit he pulled. No football coach in our history has shown less loyalty to the program than Lloyd Carr.
Gary Moeller got fired with the justification questionable and has still shown a much more unconditional love for the institution to this day. That's how a good adult acts. Carr is a child.

I agree. We should cut all ties with a College Football Hall of Famer, a guy who brought us a national championship and five Big Ten championships, and a great role model and representative of the university. Fuck him and everything he stands for.

Lloyd Carr has his strengths and weaknesses, his good decisions, his good actions, and the ones he or we can look back and think he could have done better. Overall, Lloyd was a very good coach and a better human being, and let he who is perfect cast the first stone!
Being a Michigan Man is an ideal standard that one must strive for, with the understanding that you may never attain that ideal, rather it is in the striving for that standard wherein lies the heart of a Michigan Man.....

And i am sick of hearing how great a man Lloyd was for raising money for Motts. So did RR, so will Hoke, and so did just about every other coach at UM in my lifetime. IF Lloyd was still coaching at Riverview, he might be attempting to raise money but it wouldn't be millions, he got that much because he was the coach at UM not because he was Lloyd Carr great guy. Doing something charitable does not (or should not) wash away every sin you ever committed, just go ask Jim Tressel.

The NCAA doesn't give penalties and show-causes for undermining your successors to feed your own fragile ego, so yeah, Tressel is a "confirmed rule breaker" and Carr isn't.
Outside of your little world where the NCAA rulebook is gospel, some actually have their own moral compass. And it leads many of us to think that Michigan football openly promoting Lloyd and pretending nothing happened because our corportist AD thinks that's the best way to "brand" the program is wrong.

but I don't believe he's the only person around here who isn't a little uncomfortable with Carr constantly being feted given everything that happened with RR. How Michigan treated him is embarrassing, and pretending like it never happened compounds the problem. So, personally, I'd be more likely to attend the OP's event if Carr weren't there. If it were only Carr and Carr-era players, I'd have no problem, because I do like Carr. But I'm not interested in any Carr + Hoke events unless I have evidence RR was also invited--it just smacks too much of a whitewashed rewriting of history.

Intentionally making life hard for the head of an institution that generously gives you a big paycheck to do vaguely defined work is also a great example for our youth.

this image rehab tour is getting old. Carr's actions should not be forgotten. Brandon is doing everything he can to make Carr look good. Time will show Brandon was involved with Carr in undercutting Bill Martin & RR in an attempt to get the AD job.
Brandon is a human moth jumping in front of every camera he can. Carr committed treason & now will only appear in controlled speaking/PR events.
He is tarnished & his actions are not that of any self proclaimed M Man.

Carr behaved badly from 2007-2009, but he certainly wasn't alone. Do we have to excommunicate everyone who was against RR during that time? And, by doing so, don't you become what you profess to loathe? That is, you (not meaning you specifically, but those who hold this view) become the "Michigan Man Police."
I used to have tons of admiration for Carr because I thought he was an awfully good coach who used his platform as head coach to advocate for rules that were in the best interests of players. But I was at Michigan when Carr dumped his first wife for Laurie Carr, was on the sidelines when Carr yelled all sorts of "non-family values" things at various players. The man was never a saint, and he's not now.
But the good he did for Michigan and for the guys who played for him far outweighs the bad; he never cheated while he was here. By those measures, I don't think there's any utility in cutting him loose. Carr has to live with the bad choices he made--isn't that enough?
As for Brandon, I'm with you: He's the Jerry Jones of college athletics. He's always the story.

More or less, yeah. It's not all about RR. It's about spitting in the face of what made this program great for a long time - lending a helping hand to the next guy up. When your loyalty is clearly only to a narrow brand of Michigan football and not to the program itself and those are people encouraged to stick around, it cultivates a potentially toxic environment.
Carr may have not been the only one who behaved badly, but reading the tea leaves it's not hard to see that he was the common denominator. The bad apples laregely revolved around his influence.

His actions are not those of a true Michigan Man. He should check what Bump Elliott did for Bo or even what RR did for Hoke---encourage kid's to stay and get education and play for M. Sadly, LC took the opposite approach---all while getting paid $388K annually as an Associate AD!!!

There are few more hardcore Rodriguez supporters than me; but banishment of Lloyd Carr? Get real, people. A few days ago, Carr was entertaining the Athletic Department's Number One Booster, Al Glick, at the last home basketball game.
I'll grant this; if there are any lingering hard feelings with Lloyd Carr following the publication of Three and Out -- and judging by this thread there clearly are some -- it would serve everyone's interest for Lloyd Carr to air out his side of any story and to answer any/all critical questions.
Had Lloyd Carr come out way back in 2009 and condemned the Free Press for its unfounded attack on Rodriguez and the football program, an awful lot of hard feelings could have been avoided. People migh understand a little better where he stood. Or perhaps, the fact that he did nothing tells us where Carr stood.
Anyway, nobody is "banishing" our Hall of Fame Coach Emeritus. But this is why, for the umpteenth time, Carr is serving no interests but his own in clamming up.

The vast majority of the Michigan football family (fans included) has moved past the dissention of the RR years. That there is a minority fixated on those three ugly seasons doesn't mean Carr needs to dredge it all back up.

Being over the dissesion of the RR years should include not openly embracing some of the key players in that division. Carr, to quote Calvin Magee from 3&O, seemed to be "numero uno" among those figures.

I was one of the founding members of this group, and am only not active in it anymore because I'm at the SPH now instead of LSA. It's a great group and I really encourage anyone considering or able to to help support them by going to this event.
I may actually go myself depending on where my finances are in late March.

It's startling to see how differently Lloyd Carr is perceived by people on this board now compared to right after 3&O was released. In late October, a lot of people were mad. Anti-Carr posts were commonly upvoted to 5 and the weak arguments that excused his post-coaching behavior were less heard from.
Fast forward a month, we beat OSU to cap a hugely satisfying season, and all of a sudden Lloyd is protected again. People had essentially declared that Michigan was now in an Era of Good Feelings and they didn't want negative thoughts about former heroes ruining their happy immersion. It once made them feel happy and warm to take solace in the legacy they thought Lloyd Carr left behind and nobody was going to rob them of it now, relentless hints of disloyalty be damned. Nope. Not when Michigan football was awesome again, nosiree.
Well I cried tears of joy when we ended our losing streak to Ohio State. I love Denard and our senior class more than any players to ever come through this program. I am positively psyched up for our future. But when it comes to Carr and his faction, I sure as hell won't enjoy the steak without thinking about the cow. That so many are content to do so belies the integrity and intellectual pride many people have about Michigan.

It really irks me to see so many people supporting Carr on here. How he treated Rich was downright despicable and for so many people here to almost turns a blind eye makes us look moronic as a fan base. I know he has done a lot for the community and I do think he has Michigan;s best interests most of the time. But too many people praise him like he is a saint. He really screwed Rich Rod and any of you deny that are simply denying the facts.
Also, you guys who keep negging people for bringing up some decent discussion are being very childish. Lets keep this board for open discussion.
