Scout is on the 5-star system (unranked players earn 1 star), and ESPN uses grades out of 100 (unranked is 40 or 45, except JuCo players, who aren't included in the average).

i agree, but getting the best kicker in the country (a 5.5 to rivals) shouldn't hurt your class. if you look at the averages above, a 5.5 would pull down the average of every class in the expanded big ten, including purdue's sorry-ass group.
you're right that you'd want to think about this kind of thing when combining the rankings, but a straight average clearly isn't the best way to do it.
then again, tim, if you could pull off a really good way of combining these rankings, that would be a major contribution to those interested in college football recruiting.

I know this has been the case for awhile this year, but it irks me that OSU has managed to shut us out completely from the 5.8+/5-star/80+ rated guys in Ohio.
We held serve in Michigan, but that's probably a losing proposition going forward.
January 31st, 2011 at 12:37 AM ^
I hope we move up to top 3 in the conference.
January 31st, 2011 at 8:25 AM ^
Based on the recruits those other B1G schools have, I don't see how Michigan can move into the top 3. Definitely won't get over Nebraska and Ohio State.
January 31st, 2011 at 12:53 PM ^
I would guess it's likely that Michigan ends up with the #3 class in the conference (but also behind Notre Dame) when all is said and done. Considering the turmoil that's gone on in the past year or so - especially in the past month - I think that would be an excellent finish.
Going forward, I think (if this January has been any indication) that Michigan will easily return to its rightful spot right near the top of Big Ten recruiting. If they can nab a couple prospects that Ohio State wants out of Ohio next year, and clean up in-state, the historically strong crops of talent in each state will be a great start.
January 31st, 2011 at 2:13 AM ^
How does Illinois have 29 commitments? My understanding is that a B10 school can only oversign by 3, and that is if they can get those 3 guys enrolled early. Maybe I'm not remembering it correclty, but I'm pretty sure that was the info that oversigning.com pulled up as the rule.
January 31st, 2011 at 10:17 AM ^
I was always curious why MI always seemed to have a lot of scholarships left over under RichRod the past 2 years or so.
I think it would be nice to see the number of commits and their relative ranking average going back say 5 years into Carr's tenure, then the RichRod years and finally this year's recruiting class. This could also include Michigan's B10 class rank in respect to the other schools.
Has someone done this in the past?
January 31st, 2011 at 10:50 AM ^
only 8 DTs in the entire conference at this point.
January 31st, 2011 at 12:55 PM ^
I think you'll end up seeing more of these guys playing DT. Some guys currently listed as offensive linemen or defensive ends (i.e. Michigan commit Chris Rock) will play DT in college.
Also, the conference is likely to add at least one more good DT, with Darian Cooper choosing from a top four that includes 3 Big Ten schools.
