WTKA Roundtable 9/15/2022: Fred Jackson Approves
Things discussed:
- The JJing: A perfect performance, so we nitpick the throw to Bell. Wanted more: threw the post that nobody usually throws and got a TD. Froze LBs and safeties. The post to Cornelius Johnson too. (Watch Devin & Al's film study this week.)
- Effect on the offense: opens up a lot of things that didn't work last year, like Split Flow. The Split Zone package was probably JJ's package either way but it is lethal when they run the counters (Read Ace's One Frame At a Time this week.)
- Oluwatimi whoa! Concern about Zinter's play in this game. Barnhart talk with Sam.
- What to do with Cade? BE READY TO LEAD. Eric Mayes captained a team from the sidelines too.
- During the break: Boos for Cade? Watch how the fanbase comes out for him after.
- CJ Stokes: Break out the Fred Jacksonisms.
- UConn: Lost their star QB, who's the guy who lost Penn State the Iowa game last year. Worst cornerbacks we've ever seen. Utah State is actually bad, that's why that game was competitive.
- Amorion Walker.
- Notre Dame: Coaches can recruit, but can they coach?

What’s the Ja Morant story? We could’ve had him in a Beilein offense??

Eric, the guy from South Carolina, is a Michigan fan and has fed information to Michigan about local prospects in the past. He knew about Ja Morant's talent in high school but didn't forward anything to Michigan in that case. Instead, Ja ended up at Murray State. Sam likes to poke Eric about this.
Even if Eric had sent along Ja's tape, it's pretty unlikely Ja would've ended up at Michigan. Morant was a sleeper even for the mid-major level (Murray St randomly discovered him). He got more attention his senior year, but was locked in with Murray St by that point.
Ja would have been in the class with Livers, Brooks, and Poole so we ended up alright.

Anybody else noticing how Brian is much more engaged in these than he has been for the last few months? You can really notice the change and that he appears much happier watching the team now than he has been, it's a nice to see old Brian back.

He looks cleaned up and happier on all fronts. Happy for the guy!

"I watched it twenty times to make sure I wasn't crazy. . ."
Watching something twenty times says its own thing about that, Brian. . . ;-D

I'm gonna go against the grain and say that JJ throwing that dagger to the post is not necessarily a point in his favor. We are pretty sure JJ can make those 1% explosive plays (see the pass to Daylen Baldwin last year) against tendency. We want to see him play with consistency within the offense. So it's nice to see that long bomb, but it's incredibly unlikely that throw is there against better teams, so it's not that encouraging to see him go to it in his first try. It seems less likely that he has such a supreme understanding of the play and the defense that he breaks a decades-long tendency but rather that he has a tendency as a young buck to linger on the possible long balls.

How about all the other passes, you know, the passes where every throw was a completion except for the one that Ronnie Bell completely muffed ...

JJ played great. JJ had what may have been statistically the most efficient performance in Michigan history. How much does that project to tougher games on the schedule? TBD, but I'm pointing out one potential thing to monitor.

That was the Mills concept that Steve Spurrier ran. It's a post route run behind a square in. It's supposed to be a shot play. The post was open so he threw the post.

"Threw the post" sounds like some kind of card game slang.

I'm referring to the Dagger: the play to Roman Wilson. See Al Borges's breakdown of the play:
The point of the post route here is to run right at the safety and occupy him. Here is how it is intended to be run, with the safety covering the deep route:
Against Hawaii the safety (both safeties in fact) inexplicably attack the line of scrimmage to stop the run. So yes, JJ made the right throw. But this seems like such a rare outcome that I'm not going to crown him as a savant for recognizing it.

JJ McCarthy is like Fred Jackson but throws the post fast.

It is great to see Brian laughing.

I understand the extended discussion on the offense, because of JJ, but surprised there was no talk about the defense.
