WTKA Roundtable 4/27/2023: CJ Stroud Needs a Lawyer
Things discussed:
- Recruiting is #1: Should Ohio State fans be freaking out? Well yeah, because Michigan has Ohio State's class.
- Why are centers underrated? High schools can't waste beasts at center, and Wonderlic scores don't come out in college recruiting.
- Jerod Smith: How that all went down. How committable were his Georgia and Alabama and Tennessee offers? Pretty committable.
- I'Marion Stewart is their #1 WR since the July camp. Marquise Lightfoot is turning into an elite, good to have Stewart at his school in his ear but that one's an uphill battle.
- The three transfers: Those are all depth chart things after spring. NHG was still hurt. Henning is a loss but there were other guys doing that and he wasn't going to be getting many targets. Moten really fell off a cliff last year, and if he's behind Quinten Johnson and Zeke Berry, it wasn't happening.
- NFL Draft: Don't like the quarterbacks.
- Seth thinks teams are going to pass on QBs and take the personality gamble on Jalen Carter. Everyone agrees he's the best player in the draft, but even Georgia coaches are saying they won't miss him: Todd McShay has 7 sources.
- Brian: Ignore these quarterbacks, all of them are going to be failures.
- CJ Stroud: Every time he opens his mouth it's like stop talking. Michael Vick and Deshaun Watson are the guys you model yourself after? Losing to Michigan doesn't define me? You're a football player not a test taker? Dude!
- All I'm hearing there is Georgia coaches are going to bad mouth their own players at the draft; seems like something the recruits should know about.
- Can the Lions trade down and get Devon Witherspoon lower? Only if the QBs fall down to 6th and someone wants to trade up five spots to get one.
- Wolverines in the draft? Mazi Smith doesn't have the pass rush to be in the 1st round but solid 2nd rounder. DJ Turner on the other hand could make it. Seth: there's a pretty tight group of CBs and they're all in a pretty solid order so that run could happen in the 1st round or 2nd. He's got a really high floor and some team is going to see the ceiling too, because his one issue is he's too slight.

The notion of Ohio State fans losing their minds is either a) redundant or b) a false predicate.

Did you listen at all, or could you just not wait to get to get your cheap dig in?
They spent like ten seconds chuckling with glee, a much longer "yeah but", and then started breaking down the class in detail. Seth was the most bullish but mostly in the context of "yes OSU fans are freaking out because of the way the classes look right now (but get your screenshots in while you can)".
Tip: Desperate attempts to look smart usually have the opposite effect.

The other value in what Michigan is accomplishing (by having a competitive if not superior class to OSU's, and taking guys from Ohio that OSU may have taken or should have taken) is to force OSU into the defensive in their own backyard. That diverts resources and time, so overall it's a good thing to be doing.
I suspect (as most do) that OSU's class will end up ahead of Michigan's. However, closing that gap, and getting really good players out of Ohio, will pay dividends for years in the future.

If we're debating whether our recruiting class or OSU's recruiting class will be better, we've already won.
It was just a couple of years ago that it was impossible to conceive that we could even be in the same area code as them in recruiting. It felt like a permanent structural thing.

OSU is going to have a great class - they're #2 right now behind UM. But it's nice to see UM picking up some high-level guys off these two great years.
I like Bryce Young at QB; the rest of the guys I'm pretty lukewarm on. Will Levis could be a solid NFL QB even if he tops out at "more buff Kirk Cousins". Stroud seems like a guy who's going to need a lot to go his way to be good in the NFL and I'm not sure his first team will be able to do that for him. And Richardson is going to get someone fired; he's a smart QB and a great athlete but his accuracy issues aren't just "Florida doesn't have good WRs".

Everything about the Anthony Richardson hype feels like GMs trying to replicate the Josh Allen pick and forgetting that was the exception, not the rule. I understand the impulse, to a degree. I suspect the NFL front offices thinking about using a top five pick for Richardson know that it probably won't work out. But they have a top five pick because their organizations and rosters are generally terrible. Picking sensibly won't buy them any more time than being wrong about Richardson's NFL future. Better to gamble on Richardson than commit yourself to an inevitable firing.
Absolutely. I also think people forget how objectively bad-to-meh Allen was for 2 years in the league. Buffalo crafted their entire team around him and he's turned into a star (though the playoff loss to the Bengals this year highlight perhaps his ceiling as a passer), but for everyone Allen there dozens of Paxton Lynch types.

I'm not much of an NFL fan but hoo boy the talk about C.J. Stroud and his limitations on the rountable this morning really stood out. It didn't sound to me like they were simply piling on an OSU QB who we beat twice, either. That guy is going to get drafted (presumably high) in the first round and if he pans out (busts) like other recent OSU QBs then somebody is going to get fired. Plus....at some point does OSU's track record of great college QBs faring poorly in the pros have a negative effect on their recruiting? Seems like it should...?
I hope CJ Stroud is/was amazing, and it was just Michigan's defense that made him look average.
You guys are so wrong on Young. He is special.
Stroud, on the other hand. I continue to think back about a thread a few weeks ago where half mgoblog had Stroud above Young. Yikes!
So weird. Vick was a prolific runner at VT and a 1000 yard rusher in the NFL. Legal issues aside, how is Stroud playing like him?
The NFL didn’t listen to this show, especially the Lions. Brian’s take on Stroud was hilarious (and right on).
