John O'Korn to the forefront [Eric Upchurch]

Per a source, Wilton Speight has broken his collarbone and is out for the remainder of the regular season. Depending on the exact nature of the issue it is possible he could return for the bowl game.

FWIW, when Tony Romo broke his collarbone last year he was projected to be out eight weeks, and was supposed to be out 6-8 after collarbone surgery in May. Speight had a bad collarbone break in high school—that's why he's a year older than most of his class—and may be in line for a similar surgery.

Michigan will almost certainly go with John O'Korn in Speight's stead; in scattered snaps this year he's 13/18 for 114 yards and two TDs. O'Korn's mobile enough to incorporate some designed QB runs, so we've got that going for us.

Hate that my first post is title this, but hot damn this truly does suck ballz.  Even though many weren't convinced with Speight as the #1 QB, after the Maryland game it felt like he turned the corner.  Terrible performance against Iowa, but still he was our best shot to win the next 2.

What bothers me now is looking back at all of our blowout wins, and yet O'Korn barely got many chances to throw.  Rutgers was understandable, but Hawaii, Maryland, and even Penn State should have had more garbage time dedicated to him.

If we were able to run the ball on Iowa, obviously this is less of a concern.  But this is the worst possible injury to happen to our team.  Unless O'Korn hasn't been distracted by "playing school", I don't see us boding well in Columbus next week.

Well for all those wanting O'Korn they finally got him,  but we will see how this goes. For whatever reason I am not worried about the drop off that much. Foolish? Most likely but in Harbaugh I trust

Remember that John O'Korn was on the scout team last year and has been getting Harbaugh knowledge this year too.  He has performed well in his limited games at Michigan and he also had that season at Houston.  He also still has 3 very good targets to throw at and a stable of very good running backs.

This isn't the end of the world.

the current weather forecast for 11/26 says "rain and drizzle possible". And as we all know, Urban Meyer is allergic to rain. Also, weather forecasts from 2 weeks out are always 100% accurate and reliable.

I understand the panic and chaos, but goddamnit we have come to far for this. If Osu can win a title on a third string qb, and msu can beat osu with Tyler O'Connor then why the hell is John O'Korn not up for the task. He has started in CFB for a full year, and 8 months ago was pegged as our qb this year...your time is here John. Fuck'em up. Onward

Tough emotions on this one. I feel terrible for Wilton, he was really trending upward. Get well soon and get back into the flow. On the other hand, I'm thrilled for JOK and excited to see what his game looks like. I'm sure this comes as shock to the team, but I'm sure they'll rally around JOK and play lights out versus IU. Obviously, having your starting QB go down is never a good thing. But, this might yet have a silver lining as JOK's skill set is differed enough that it might be tough for IU and OSU to know what to expect. In that vein, I have to believe that Harbaugh is going to use this unknown to his advantage the best he can. Whether it is an advantage or not ... Well, we'll just have to wait and see. It's going to interesting, that's for sure! Go Blue, Beat IU!

There seems to be a tendency to overestimate the importance of the loss of one player.  We were gonna really kill Iowa because they were down a few.  When Wisky lost Biegel, it didn't decimate their defense.  MSU last year lost their QB for the OSU game and a few years before Bullough got caught with a needle in his thigh and missed their bowl game.  OSU wins natty with backup qb.  Sometimes the team and the replacment rises up.

We have a good QB in O'Korn ready to go!  If O'Korn gets injured then I would worry about Shane but hopefully O'Korn leads us into the playoffs. If he does, it will be tough for Wilton to retake his starting point. But who knows, Peters may blow them all away next summer's camp. I wonder when he broke it during the 3rd QTR?

Going into the season, about 85% of the people on here thought O'Korn was going to be our QB. He wasn't. Speight won the job. Well now we get to see what O'Korn has got. We have NO idea what the drop-off between the two is. It might be huge, it might be very small. Harbaugh played the guy he thought was better. That doesn't mean O'Korn sucks--it just means Speight was better. Maybe Harbaugh felt Speight was an 8 and O'Korn was a 7. With our defense we don't need our QB to be perfect to win. We just need our QB to be good. Can O'Korn be good? He sure was good for a while with Houston. Let's see what he's got before we start sobbing in our milk.

Exactly. And for all we know, ya Harbaugh went with what he thought was the best option but, Okorn could be a lot better when live bullets are flying and he's in the spotlight. The offense might be more dynamic with Okorn and his running ability and ability to make a play when it's not there. As long as he's not a turnover machine. Or he may not. But we will know soon enough.

I have confidence that this coaching staff will get O'Korn prepared with a succesful gameplan.  He has starting experience and performed well at Houston.  He has two years in this program so the concepts have already been driven into the very fabric of his mind. His mobility factor is very much needed the next two weeks.  Go Blue.

This coaching staff will have this team prepared and they need support instead of the negative being spread.  This is not a Brady Hoke or Rich Rod team.  This was one loss in which all phases of the team and a terrible officaing crew

Our backup has experience and was picked by many as our starter before the season. It's still not good, and while a 10-2 season can't be that bad (inline with the downbeat preseason picks), it will feel very disappointing after that 9-0 start with a senior-heavy team. We've got our work cut out for us, even more than before. O'Korn will need to produce enough offense to beat one of the best teams in football this year, in their building, in the Game, in his second career start here. And that's assuming our defense can throttle Urban Meyer's remorseless smashmouth spread (and you better believe they've been watching lesser teams have success on the edge against us and contemplating how they can attack it with superior firepower to those guys). Prospects are bleak, but there's still hope. Go Blue!

our quarterback situation. The only gametime decision is which play O'Korn runs on his first series and how he looks heading into Ohio State week. How about that news for the CFP committee ranking on Tuesday.

Not like there is anything riding on the next two weeks.

This will be the biggest bit of adversity for Team 137, but that's football. JOK, despite his relative lack of experience with the ones, has still been under Harbaugh's tutelage for two years now, in addition to having experience as the starter at Houston for ~1.5 seasons. He's by no means a noob to working under Harbaugh or being subject to live-fire situations. What's more, I think the mobility that JOK brings can work to the advantage of the offense because 1) M now has a QB who is a legit threat to take the ball and run with it and the opposing defense will need to adjust for that, and 2) there ain't no film on him doing it. It just adds to the crazy mix of threats that makes Harbaughffense scary to opposing DC's, and that's just the way Harbaugh likes it.

I'm very pleased with Speight and his progress overall this season... but he was ineffective all game, and was clearly injured and impaired at the end on Saturday.  That he wasn't benched for O'Korn says.... what?  That Harbaugh has little faith in O'Korn?  That he was too trusting of Speight when Speight (presumably) said "I can do it, coach, put me back in!"?  That he was hesitant to bring in a back up in a pressure situation despite his "next man up" philosophy?  Could've beens are worthless, but just one or two first downs would've won it....  Anyway, on to next week, and, like it or not, next man at QB...

above, but the positive is the whole week of game prep is 100% devoted to JOK or whomever starts. Every rep moves over and the script of plays can be dialed to the starter's preference. Then all the post game coaching and gameplanning for OSU can be geared to the new guy. If anyone can sharpen a QB and O adjustments in 2 weeks, JH is the guy.

Im not buying it until Harbaugh announces it... Ive seen differing opinions with different sources. Im trending STRONGLY to believe its not broken.

predicted O'Korn to be the starter this year. I think Speight probably is the better QB now due to the experience amassed playing in the Big Ten this year but it's hardly crazy to think that the fact he's not gonna be around for another year played a big role in Speight winning the role to start the year.

I think I would have preferred this news coming out after the committee's rankings tomorrow night, because an injured starting quarterback is exactly the type of thing they'll count against a team. Putting an opportunity for people to see O'Korn play before ranking us again might have even helped. It doesn't change the "win out, go to B1G championship" strategy, but it will probably drop Michigan out of the top 5.
