John O'Korn to the forefront [Eric Upchurch]

Per a source, Wilton Speight has broken his collarbone and is out for the remainder of the regular season. Depending on the exact nature of the issue it is possible he could return for the bowl game.

FWIW, when Tony Romo broke his collarbone last year he was projected to be out eight weeks, and was supposed to be out 6-8 after collarbone surgery in May. Speight had a bad collarbone break in high school—that's why he's a year older than most of his class—and may be in line for a similar surgery.

Michigan will almost certainly go with John O'Korn in Speight's stead; in scattered snaps this year he's 13/18 for 114 yards and two TDs. O'Korn's mobile enough to incorporate some designed QB runs, so we've got that going for us.

Hopefully he'll be able to recover quickly and safely.  The team will have to figure it out.  At least they have a winnable game to prepare for OSU.  And honestly O'Korn is good enough and different enough that he might be able to add a new element to the offense in the short term, before people get film on him.

The team will rally and O'kourns fresh legs will add a new dimension to this offense. We will be ready for OSU.

Wish him luck in his recovery.  UM will have to overcome.  Having O'Korn as a replacement does help; he's a viable starter, and gives the team a different mixture of play.

No excuses. Other guys need to step up and play their hearts out. This is football, shit happens like this every season. Don't lose faith in a Harbaugh-coached team!

Those who stay... I swear I've heard that somewhere before.  O'korn had every reason to leave when he lost the job to start this season.  Time to shine and prove why that saying is true.

Well this sucks. There go my hopes of beating OSU. Not that I think O'Korn can't be good, I just don't see him being able to beat them in his second game starting at Columbus. What a punch in the nuts.

All the gleeful celebration by Michigan fans of the 8 or 9 QBs that we've knocked out of the game already this season, then losing Speight in the same way.

That's the way it is. Let's see just how deep we are. Good things could come out of this, though it's really about this year. Next year is a whole new ball game what with the QBs already in the program, or McCaffrey coming in - if depth is indeed a problem right now (we'll see), it should not be as we move into 2017. The competition is going to be really high, and that's nothing but good for the team.

Over half if this board was clamoring for JOK during the spring, summer and beginning of fall camp amd anytime Wilson looked rocky. This is the guy almost everyone was predicting to be the season opener starter. He lit it uo his year in Houston, we know he can slung the ball, he's been in real time games, and had a full year of coaching at the #2 spot. Harbaugh even mentioned at the beginning that this QB battle was the hardest to make given how close these guys were. Thankful he has the Indiana game to get some timing down and give us a chance in Columbus. I see alot of Chicken Littles in here claiming the sky is falling. Seems maybe you should spend the next few days in a safe space with a th some coloring books and crayons.

Yup! I mean it's not like we're having to turn it over to a true freshman or some boob with a noodle for an arm. Gotta have faith in Okorn and the staff. They've showed a lot of innovation thus far and I'm guessing there will be new wrinkles with Okorn. The rest of the team will rally around this and step up their game.

This is really not the end of the world at all. O'Korn has tons of starting experience already at Houston and he's been able to get lots of time so far this season in the second half of games. He looked good on those too.

I guess I don't see why the freak-out..Yes, it sucks a good young player was hurt and cannot play the rest of the year but, let's keep a little perspective.

O'Korn has started and played more college snaps that Speight has.  He also offers an entirely new dimention to our ofference wtih his mobility and scrambling.   Just watching the Iowa game, there were 3 or 4 times I wish Wilton would have had the mobility and speed of O'Korn, he would have been able to take off, get 7 or 8 yards and help keep some drives alive.

Plus, as other have mentioned before, this now takes Jabrill out of the Wildcat and moves him to running back where frankly he is better.  We can now run a more effective read-option since Jabrill almost never handed the ball off as QB.

O'korn gets a game, in the Big House, to get into the groove, if you will, and I think we are all going to be suprised when we play at Columbus.   Similar to when Cardale came in for OSU 2 years ago, defenses have to change their plan....The first couple of times Okorn scrambles and takes off for 8-10 yards, that defense is going to change..

Again, sucks for WS but its not all doom and gloom....

This could be a good thing and give us an edge. OSU has to prepare for a new game plan with only one week of film to watch and O'Korn's feet can make up for the break down in pass protection via the LT.

Speight and okorn we in a contested battle. okorn has starts under his belt, and I think he will add a new wrinkle to the offense with his mobility....also, remember cardel Jones ?

A lot of people are too young to know this, but Michigan has a rather illustrious history of infamous starting QB injuries, especially shoulder injuries, which affected a great many things for the history and outcomes of the football program.  Hopefully Speight makes a quick recovery.

  • Dennis Franklin - broken collar bone vs. Ohio State 1973 - cost UM vote to Rose Bowl.  Probably one of the most saddest outcomes in UM football history.
  • Rick Leach - hamstring injury affected play throughout 1978 season as well as 1979 Rose Bowl game.
  • John Wangler - knee injury vs. North Carolina DE Lawrence Taylor in 1979 Gator Bowl, returned for 1980 championship season as 5th yr sr starter, but UM option offense scrapped.
  • BJ Dickey - shoulder injury, missed 1980 season after starting several games in 1979 seaon and as talented backup 1977 and 1978 seasons. Returned for 1981 season as 5th year sr. behing Soph. Steve Smith.
  • Steve Smith - shoulder injury 1983 Rose Bowl vs. UCLA. Returned senior season 1983. Option offense not scrapped. Lead UM to 9-3 record and Sugar Bowl loss in sr. season.
  • Jim Harbaugh - broken arm vs. 1984 Michigan State as sophomore starter. Returned for 10+ win seasons 1985 and 1986 as junior and senior starter.

Second -- All season long we've not been slow to proclaim how great it is to have 3 QBs who could start on the vast majority of P5 teams. If that sentiment was true last Friday, and I beleive it was, then it's still true today.

I suspect that we'll see a rather different offense no matter who starts on Satuday. We've watched the offense evolve over the season as Speight has gained proficiency in it and his timing with his recievers has improved. Had to imagine that O'Korn (or less likely Morris) will be able to pick up and run the offense with the same sophistication with only a week of prepping to start. However, I have no doubt that Harbaugh will prepare the team to maximize the strengths of whomever starts at QB.

Losing Speght is awful luck for him and the team, but the backups have plenty of talent and at least some real game experience. Keep the faith. Go Blue.

QBs get injured regularly. Heck Alabama has a different starter (albeit not b/c of injury) than it did at the beginning of the regular season. Wisconsin, MSU, LSU, Texas A&M, etc all have had injuries to the QB. You've got to have 2 of quality.

Awful luck would be if (crosses-fingers) O'Korn now gets hurt. That would be awful luck. But as shown by MSU and Illinois (just to pick two) it happens, and as shown by OSU two years ago, if it does, you can still win big things.

we're totally screwed, since i'm sure that harbaugh and staff have been ignoring the backups.

plus they haven't shown any ability to get a quarterback ready to play.

Honestly, I feel bad for Speight -- he worked hard, turned himself into a quality player who rightfully earned the starting job, and performed (mostly) well.

But, as pointed out, OSU and MSU both won B1G championships with their backups. While it would be great to go all 13-14 games with the same QB, that can't be the expectation.

No one will feel sorry for us, and we shouldn't either.

O'Korn came here to play, and win -- now is his chance. Where he doesn't succeed, it will be up to the rest of the team (which has a ton of seniors, esp at WR and TE) to pick him up.

He had more eligibility left.  Even if Speight was a little worse, his ability to be around longer helped shape the starter decision at the beginning of the year.

At least that's what I'm telling myself as to why O'Korn didn't get the nod.

O'Korn will be tasked with relatively easy throws in play action and longer throws with max protect.  This can work, as we still have very good receivers and TEs.  Question is, can he go through his progressions without giving in to his natural instinct to tuck and run?  Speight was exceptional in stepping up in the pocket or side-stepping pass rushers - BUYING TIME but not giving up on finding open receivers.  Wilton's coolness in the face of pressure has been a huge factor in lighting up the scoreboard this year.  Can O'Korn slow the game down like that?  Will JH the "QB Whisperer" be able to keep his new starter focused on the things he needs to do to be successful?

If ohio can win the national championship with their third string QB and MSU can win at the horseshoe with their backup, this should not slow this team down. Speight was trending up quickly and I'll be excited to get him back next season or for the bowl game but I think O'Korn is more than prepared to fill in. Team just has to use this as motivation rather than see it as an obstacle.
