GOOCHLAND APPROVED

This GIS went much better than expected.

This feature on Wilton Speight has perhaps the least informative headline ever; that's okay, though, because it comes from The Goochland Gazette, and [keels over laughing].

Okay, pull yourself together, post rapturous blockquote:

Standing in a huddle on the sideline with his teammates just before kickoff, he towers over his running backs and offensive line by a good five inches. He gestures confidently, like a conductor fully in charge of an orchestra, wholly in tune with and in charge of his surroundings.

The next thing that strikes your attention is that beautiful spiral. Tight and wind-resistance, he hums the pigskin all over the yard, from sideline-to-sideline, completing every route in the playbook - hitches, curls, posts, outs, you name it — with uniform ease. Comparisons to Ben Roethlisberger are a given, not only because of his 6’6, 230 pound frame, but also due to his surprisingly nimble feet and his innate ability to prolong plays and spin productive downs out of would-be sacks.

Goochland.

Goodbye, JuJu

CA ATH JuJu Smith was always considered a longshot to end up at Michigan, even though he'd previously scheduled an official visit for the Ohio State game. After very positive visits to Notre Dame, Ohio State, and new contender Oregon, Smith dropped the Wolverines from his list, citing their less-than-stellar performance:

Before PANIC sets in, please note that this is relatively unusual; yes, of course winning helps recruiting, but normally a team's win/loss record affects the next class more than the current one (in this case, Michigan isn't doing itself any favors for 2015). If you click through to Tom's tweet, you'll note that he responds to someone stating that Da'Shawn Hand may feel the same way with a straightforward "No, I don't think that." Along those same lines...

Now, does Michigan's demoralizing loss to State potentially affect 2015 in-state recruits like Mike Weber, Josh Alabi, and Brian Cole? Absolutely. To Michigan kids who've now seen MSU take five of the last six games, the Spartans are now the state's top football program—and the most stable one. That doesn't mean they won't consider U-M—the flip side to this is a recruit sees plenty of opportunity to help bring a traditionally strong program back to the top—but at the same time, it obviously doesn't help.

Hand's Final Visit

Da'Shawn Hand's final official visit comes on Saturday when he watches 4-4 Florida take on Vanderbilt; while the Gators were once considered a potential dark horse, a season even uglier than Michigan's has robbed them of any momentum, especially with coach Will Muschamp squarely on the hot seat (while a team's record doesn't have a huge effect on most recruits, the coach recruiting them potentially not having a job next year usually does). Rivals's Mike Farrell, who's the recruiting reporter in closest regular contact with Hand, says in his latest column that he thinks Michigan holds a slight edge over Alabama ($). It's hard to see Florida jumping into the mix with Hand's announcement coming a week from today.

Etc.

The M Block's Eric Rutter pens a lengthy, quote-filled feature on 2014 commit Chase Winovich, covering his season, playing both ways this year, his friendship with fellow Pennsylvanian Sterling Jenkins (both plan to visit for the OSU game), and his feelings on Hand and Malik McDowell:

Chase then went on to share his thoughts on how Michigan will close the 2014 class, focusing specifically on defensive line prospects Malik McDowell and DaShawn Hand.  "I have a gut feeling that Malik McDowell will go to Michigan.  I'm not to sold on [DaShawn] Hand yet, but people seem pretty, pretty, really, really confident that they know their stuff and say he's headed to Michigan.  So I'm going to trust them and say, yeah, I hope he's going to Michigan.  But like I said, I definitely have that gut feeling on Malik McDowell."  This would put the finishing touches on a strong class that ranks among the best in the country for 2014.

Winovich is apparently taking his recruiting guru cues from Sam Webb.

If you've got a 247 subscription, Clint Brewster looks at five candidates to be Michigan's next 2015 commit ($).

247 released their Crystal Ball rankings; I'm currently ranked #40 (out of 194, so... I'll take it!) for 2014 and, thanks to Michigan's early efforts, am all the way up at #16 for the class of 2015.

on the #40 ranking.  Is it just me though, or is that a pretty homogenous looking group?

As much as the State loss stings, I can't see any long-term recruiting dynamics at play.  Yes, they've beaten us a ton lately (at least 3 of loses being RR aided) and we have to go back to that shithole next season (good lookin' out, DB), but as we continue into the post-RR era, State is really just entering it.

Their weakened recruiting is about to become evident as they lose most of their O-line and 6-7 starters on D.  Their schedule takes a (small) step up next year (Oregon instead of ND, OSU instead of Iowa and PSU instead of Illinois).  While this season has been frustrating, concern about the rise of MSU isn't necessary.

Yes, DB was meant to refer to Dave Brandon...and I'm fairly certain that the athletic director of one of the league's top schools has some say with regard to scheduling following conference expansion.  IIRC, he even commented that he had input to the scheduling (consider OSU timing and divisional alignment).  How you give up a home game against one of your rivals is beyond me.  How Michigan got screwed when no other school came close, who knows?

For the record:
Michigan doubles up against both MSU and NW on the road.
OSU has no doubled-up road games in 2014.
PSU doubles away at Indiana.
Wisconsin gets Iowa on the road twice. (at least a rivalry game)
Nebraska has no doubled-up road games.
MSU has no doubled-up road games.

Only one ("prominent" program) doubles road trips twice - Michigan.  The ADs most certainly had input into scheduling. What did we gain to make us the most disadvantaged with regard to scheduling??

"Their weakened recruiting is about to become evident as they lose most of their O-line and 6-7 starters on D."

Which weakened recruiting do you speak of? Maybe I missed it.   And for anyone at UM to speak of MSU recruiting when this site has been full of laughter at 3 stars at MSU for I am sure years only to see its team get smashed in the mouth where it actually matters is beyond the pale.  Let's just shut up as a unit about any comment about MSU recruiting.  They build teams and develop talent with 30-40 ranked classes quite well.  And I believe this year (2014) they have a class around 30  and then a real chance to take all of the 2015 MI talent to boot, and if not all, most.   I have no idea what parallel universe comments like this come from.  Have you noticed Wiscy's multiple Big 10 championships the past 15 years with "weakened recruiting"?

Last, if anything is going to hurt MSU its going to be going into a division with OSU.  But it sure isnt because they are going into a division with UM, at least in 2014.

According to Rivals:

2008:  MSU had 1 4* commit
2009:  (post 3-9 RichRod): MSU had 10 4* commits
2010:  MSU had 1 5* & 4 4* commits
2011:  MSU had 4 4* commits (year one Hoke)
2012:  MSU had 3 4* commits
2013:  MSU had 3 4* commits
2014:  MSU is on pace for 2 4* commits

They've gone from 19 4-5* in 3 years, to 8 4-5* over the next three years.  That makes a difference that takes time to bear out.  Let's not pretend they only got 3*s.  They've done well developing some 3* kids and also done well with 4* kids like Bullough.

It's well reported that while we had some nice classes in terms of initial rankings (RR years)...those kids left (and/or whatnot) and what remained is the reason we start freshmen on the O-line while MSU starts seniors.  You've gotta recruit the kids, keep them and develop them.

Let's take a close look at the MSU 4s and 5s from '09 (5th-year guys this year) to '11 (3rd-year guys). In some cases (including one player, Sims, that I believe was drafted) guys ran out of eligibility. In other cases (Gholston) they took off early. I see only two 4s on the '11 list, btw.

5th-year:

Edwin Baker
David Barrent
Andrew Maxwell
Chris Norman
Larry Caper
Jeremy Gainer
Nate Klatt
Dion Sims (NFL)
Donald Spencer
Blake Treadwell *

4th-year:

William Gholston (NFL)
Joe Boisture
Max Bullough *
Isaiah Lewis *
Skyler Schofner

3rd-year:

Lawrence Thomas
Brandon Clemons

AFAICS there are only three high-rated guys from those three years starting on the current team. Sparty is making hay with 3-stars and younger players this year.

I noticed you labeled '09 the "post 3-9 RR year." That record wasn't in the books until a couple of months after the '08 season. You might not follow recruiting that closely, but it's generally felt that poor records tend to haunt the team the year *after* the debacle. Sure enough, the '10 recruiting class was bad, though there were other factors (like the Free Press) involved at that point.

after learning about why Ju-Ju dropped M from the list is cause for concern at this point...hope the coaching staff understands that blowing games on the road to shit teams like PSU is completely unacceptable....Borges' turrrrrible game-plans are now directly affecting recruiting, that shit needs to change ASAP

JeepinBen

I'm sure that having one slim-chance recruit drop Michigan from his list is exactly what this coaching staff needed. See, I was under the opinion that they actually wanted to lose games on the road just to lose them. I'm sure they didn't know that bad game plans can affect recruits! see, we should gameplan for recruiting only - not at all to win games. Good to know that blowing games on the road used to be acceptable to our coaches,, or maybe even welcomed. I'm glad that the coaches can use this piece of motivation to do better.

Exactly what I was thinking. Thank GOD for Juju so that now we can see that losing is not the preferred outcome. At least for recruiting purposes, it seems winning is what we should try to do. Are we sure the coaches got this message? Double check to be safe.

It's a huge reason why this board and these comment sections are becoming extremely annoying and spiteful. I understand that some warrent it to a high degree (such as ones directly talking about Borges), but do we need this said again here? We know the Borges haters are thinking it, that's fine, but why open up the annoying debate (I think it's annoying for most people on both sides of the issue) and negativity in every single thread, as if if you miss an opportunity to say it then it will no longer be allowed to be your opinion.

I mean, shit man, we get it, you don't like Borges. A lot of people don't. But can we just drop it sometimes so we don't have to relive this debate everywhere on this site?

Also, what JeepinBen said...

Space Coyote

Rich Rod is now in every thread again and being compared to Hoke in every thread again. Why this needs to be done? I'm guessing because being depressed never felt so good? And that goes for both sides of that argument too.

If you think you can post about Michigan football right now without depression being a big part of, I don't even know what to say. The state of things are not good. It's reflected in the attitudes of the fans. This is not merely the symptoms of a week after a loss because that wasn't some normal loss.

I guess pointing out the obvious shit play-calling is too much for you to handle...and as for jeepinben, have you ever heard of a Michigan tarhet ever flat-out say he dropped us due to a terrible loss(es)???...I understand what you have said about Al in the past, SC, and I wasn't that upset with his game-plan against MSU (until the 2nd half)....but to actually hear a recruit publicly call-out Michigan losing (to a hit team) directly affected his recruiting should be a massive cause for concern...but hey, i guess trolling my statement makes everyone on this board feel better about themselves...just remember, Harbaugher went to the 49er's and adapted his manball game-plans to a spread with a running QB and went to the super bowl

Space Coyote

November 8th, 2013 at 10:28 AM ^

And it'll be the same old argument and there will be nothing new and it will just clutter this board like the rest of the boards and it'll be completely tiresome.

Or we can look at the fact that JuJu is a defensive recruit and Al Borges's play calling probably has very little to do with why he decided to drop Michigan.

But if you want to have this debate again, if you want to annoy everyone (including people on your side of the argument), alright, then keep on keepin' on. Ruin every thread on this board.

that Brian and many others have pointed out on the UFR, podcasts, etc...I think that Borges would be a solid OC in the NFL (or on a team like Bama) where he needs every single player to be top-notch and execution will never be a problem....but M doesn't have that (and might not ever have that) and Borges has blatantly refused to adapt against the elite defenses...the guys above trolling me makes no sense, i am simply stating/venting about the obvious in hopes that the coaches will adapt and put M in a chance to win every week...but that has not happened, and continues to not happen (hence my original statement)....is it not OK to complain about a guy making $800,000 per year to watch his performance consistently regress and then listen to him arrogantly rant in every press conference and blame his players??? Where is this "accountability" that Hoke preached about when he took the job??? there certaintly hasn't been much (if any) accountability on Al's behalf, and that is the reason for a lot of fans being (justifiably) upset...i simply do not see the progression during Al's tenure, and I really do not see things being any different next year after Lewan and Schofield depart

Whitlock's horseshit about Lewan was bad, but it at least had the barest nugget of 'fact' in it - Lewan did, indeed, forego the NFL draft to play another year for Michigan.* But I'm 99% certain the Shane Morris jab was oulled entirely out of one of the folds of Whitlock's expansive ass. I feel like he did a Google image search, saw Shane's yearbook photo, and felt ready to drop some knowledge. *Which looks pretty much like Clowney's situation, if you just squint a bit and hold your breath until you pass out.

Is if the announcers during the game can talk about how some schools recruited him as a DE. I think that needs to be the criteria for QB recruiting from here on out, other schools wanted him as a DE (this should also be a requirement for all MSU RBs, and Rich Rod can only recruit QBs that people want as DBs).

I know that many on this board are going to get pissed about this, as we can never say anything negative about recruits, but if JuJu dropped Michigan because we has 2 losses, one of which was in 4xOT, then I am fine with him taking his significant talents elsewhere.

I am not trashing him as a person, or wishing him poorly, but if 2 losses is all that it takes for him to go elsewhere, then he probably wasn't all that sold on Michigan anyway.

I expect that most recruits will look at our current situation in a bit more detail and understand that (1) our offense is suffering from incredible youth and inexperience at OL (which will not be a problem after this and maybe next year); (2) our D, which is playing well already, is VERY young, and returns just about everyone; and (3) our trajectory overall, given the phenominal recruiting that Hoke has done to date, is upwards.  These two losses change nothing.

I don't think state's program is more 'stable.'  Winning games doesn't define stability though it helps.  1) Narduzzi won't be there forever and I'm hopeful he lands some where other than the B10.  2) They, as oppossed to M, are older and will lose a lot of talent next season. That leads in to 3) Their schedule next season is going to be a little rough and considering they aren't crushing it on the recruiting trail as is I'll be interested to see how fast they can develop their players.  I'd say from a recruits point of view we still look more enticing because, well, we are Michigan. If you dig a little deeper, which I hope recruits do, you can see the building blocks from the 13' and 14' classes waiting in the wings. This staff has lost some games they should of won but last year we lost to #1,2,3,7 and Nebraska I doubt that kind of losing will destabilize the recruiting edge we have in state. Yet, obviously, winning helps.
