Thursday Recruitin' Sets The 2016 Table Comment Count

We've got a vision quest

roquan-smith-4320[1]

not so fast my friend

It's not exactly a vision quest because GA LB Roquan Smith has a very good reason for hanging around after signing day: UCLA DC Jeff Ulbrich is apparently taking a position coach job with Atlanta, and that news broke almost at the same time his commit did. Way to go, Jim Mora:

Speculation behind the scenes in the media is that at least one media outlet was aware Ulbrich was going to leave UCLA as long as three weeks ago, but sat on the story until after Signing Day.

“It was common knowledge,” said one reporter. “They just agreed not to report it until after signing day.”

In any case, Smith backed off his commit and is in the wind post-signing day:

Roquan Smith’s coach told the AJC on Wednesday evening that Smith has re-opened his recruitment, and will take a couple of days to figure things out. “He’s going to open things up with his recruiting,” Macon County’s Larry Harold said. “It’s pretty much UGA, Michigan, and Texas A&M – and UCLA is still in it. Coach Ulbrich told him that he hasn’t signed anything yet (with the Falcons), and that he hasn’t made a decision. So I think they are still in it as well. We’re going to sit back for a couple of days and see how this thing plays out.”

Smith's affection for Georgia seems to have been overstated—he did commit to UCLA after all—and 24/7 reports that Michigan feels they are in the thick of it. Keep an eye out. It's probably Georgia now, but stranger things have happened.

Like a running back flipping on the eve of Signing Day

The diaries were graced by a post from one of Karon Higdon's coaches:

I did not get a hint or a hunch on Tuesday or Wednesday morning.  There were no clues.  Karan went radio silent.  Karan is a very mature young man and this was not uncommon for him to focus when it was called for.  On Wednesday the crowds gathered and after nearly 200 people piled in to watch the announcement, Karan made his way wearing all black through the court yard.  He had two hats in his hands.  One Iowa.  One Michigan.  He looked me in my eyes as I shook his hand and embraced him.  In his eyes I saw determination. I still didn't quite know but Iowa would've been my guess.  He looked very focused and walked in and took his seat.  We went through our announcements until he was the last one left.  There was obvious anticipation and his mother was a nervous wreck.  She really didnt know and neither did I.

Much longer, and recommended.

On to 2016

Aside from that potential top 50 linebacker and a grad transfer or two, the 2015 class is in the books. Eyes now turn to the 2016 class, which will be a critical one for Harbaugh to establish himself a silverback on the national level. Michigan has 14 seniors and one open slot, so our baseline is 15. Add a reasonable amount of attrition and graduate transfers and Michigan's looking at a class of about 20-24.

What that might look like by position:

3772189915_3760559bac3441efa92fbf076203fa2a[1]

Costello

QUARTERBACK: 1. Harbaugh takes a lot of quarterbacks and will obviously take at least one. With two in the most recent class, the O'Korn transfer, and no one scheduled to exit for two years, this is likely to be a rare one-QB Harbaugh class. That's even more likely if the #1 guy is CA QB KJ Costello, a national top 50 type who was highly interested in Michigan—like commit-last-summer-until-Hoke-dissuaded-him interested. If he hops on board Michigan might find it hard to grab another guy of sufficient quality to entice. Costello is giving serious consideration to Stanford and USC but even in articles from those sites he has some positive things to say about Michigan:

"Now they have Harbaugh and some big-time coaches surrounding him. I'm definitely interested. He's trying to start something new and build an unbelievable 2016 class and really get things rolling here. He was all fired up and I really dug him. He was cool."

If QB recruiting gets past Costello, OH decommit Messiah DeWeaver is a guy Michigan will keep after. There also seems to be initial mutual interest in national #1 (and Georgia commit) Jacob Eason and fellow five star Shea Patterson.

RUNNING BACK: 1 or 2. Higdon's commitment gives Michigan flexibility here. One is highly likely, as Michigan is going to lose three guys all at once in two years. Two is a possibility.

If the current staff is as interested in IL RB Kentrail Moran as the previous one was, Michigan might not have to wait long to get their first guy in the boat here. Moran flat-out told recruiting sites that he'd probably commit if Michigan hired Harbaugh, and lo, it came to pass. Moran just told an Illinois site that he was "wide open" with no leaders, though, so it seems like Michigan has not reached out to him yet. With 2015 in the books we should know within a couple weeks how serious the current staff's interest is in him.

If Moran falls through or they do take a second there are a couple of instate options: Southfield RB Matt Falcon had a nasty knee injury last year but is still a four-star type, as is Detroit King's Martell Petteway. (Falcon's reported interest in OSU is likely moot after OSU took two 2016 RBs.) GA RB Elijah Holyfield (yes, that Holyfield) almost committed($) to Brady Hoke and was reportedly hyped on the Harbaugh hire.

FULLBACK: 1. You know it's happening. No names yet.

WIDE RECEIVER: 2 or 3. Michigan has as lot of solid options but no blue-chips except Drake Harris and his no good very bad hamstrings. They'd like to change that, and there are a couple of big time options available. CA WR Dylan Crawford is close friends with Costello and visited at the same time he did last year. Fellow CA WR Theo Howard is planning a visit this month($) and gave M the ol' "dream offer" treatment. He seemed to mean it:

"They are my dream school. I know some say dream school and then name four or five schools, but I can say that Michigan is the school I've dreamed of playing for."

There is chatter that Costello, Crawford, Howard, and CA DB David Long would all make a trip to Ann Arbor together($) in the near future. If that does come off that would be major commit watch time.

Michigan also fired off an offer($) to three-star CA slot Demetric Felton. That's his second offer (Utah was first); he's also interested in Duke, so academics are a priority.

There are also options closer to home. Michigan's starting from behind with Detroit King WR Donnie Corley, but you know Harbaugh will be coming at him hard now. Chandler Park WR Jalen Martin is a (currently) three-star option; IN WR Austin Mack is being pursued by all the regional powers and Harbaugh will stick Michigan's name in as well. MSU commit and NJ WR Cameron Chambers will probably get a poke as well in case he's more interested in Harbaugh; he camped last year.

TIGHT END: 1 or 2. HARBAUGH LIKE TIGHT END SMASH. &c.

The prime target here is OH TE Luke Farrell, who figures to be a Michigan-OSU battle if OSU is going to continue recruiting Farrell after getting a commit from Jake Hausmann. CA TE Devin Asiasi would fill Michigan's sudden need for a guy named Devin who loves bucket hats and declared he would officially visit($) as soon as he got an offer. M also offered Philly TE Naseir Upshur, but he's tough to get a read on at the moment.

bilde[1]

Swenson

OFFENSIVE LINE: 3 or 4. Michigan already has IL OL Erik Swenson in the boat. He's strictly a tackle. Traverse City OL Thiyo Lukasa was on the verge of committing to Michigan early, then dropped M entirely during The Troubles and now sounds interested again. If Harbaugh goes after him hard I would bet he gets him.

Fellow in-state OL Michael Jordan is impossible to Google but has seven picks for M in on the 247 Crystal Ball, all of which date back to the Hoke era. Like Corley, they're currently behind but that could change in a hurry here.

Regionally, WI OL Ben Bredeson is a major national prospect who expressed a lot of interest in Michigan early. Can Harbaugh overcome the natural gravity of the Badgers? Virginia's Clark Yarborough visited Michigan twice last summer and spurred a rash of M predictions before things went south

DEFENSIVE END: 2. Still more depth required here. One of Harbaugh's first offers was to AZ DE Connor Murphy, the brother of former Stanford DE and current NFLer Trent. He was very excited about the opportunity.

In-state DE Khalid Kareem momentarily committed to MSU but put himself bac on the marker two days later; Michigan is after IL DE Josh King, though the current trend is OSU on him. Staggeringly huge Cinci DE Prince Sammons (6'8", 280) was interested last summer.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE: 2 or 3. A major need after zero in the 2015 class, tackle will be addressed in depth. The #1 target is also the #1 player in the country: NJ DT Rashan Gary of Paramus Catholic. Michigan has a couple of Paramus kids on the roster and hired his old high school coach in a recruiting capacity. Meanwhile his new high school coach played for Harbaugh in the NFL. That doesn't guarantee a commit but it should mean Michigan has an inside track.

There aren't a whole lot of other names out there other than Cass Tech OG/DT Michael Onwenu. As with many local guys, Michigan is behind right now with the transition and rush to finish the 2015 class but has the potential to move up quickly.

1332290[1]

Harding

LINEBACKER: 3. Michigan has MD LB Dele Harding committed. Other than that, names have yet to pop up. Other than the best name: IL LB TUF BORLAND. Wisconsin will be tough (tuf?) competition, though they just changed coaches as well.

DEFENSIVE BACK: 3. This is also a spot where realistic names are currently thin. Michigan will go after PSU commit LaVert Hill, the brother of Delano, until such time as they're told not to.

Michigan is in the top eight for NJ ATH Ahmir Mitchell despite little contact thus far from Harbaugh. VA CB Patrice Rene first made a name for himself as a Canadian kid who showed to Michigan's camp; he is a high academic kid who should be interested in what Michigan has to offer when the staff gets around to evaluating him.

SPECIALISTS: 1? K Andrew David arrives and it looks like Michigan is trying to bring in an Aussie to compete with Kenny Allen at punter. Even if they do, the Aussie will be gone and Allen a senior by the time this class hits campus. Michigan could be on the hunt for a punter, especially if they're going heavy into a rugby style Allen may be unfamiliar with.

-------------------------------

That's 19-23 guys in what should be a top ten class.

that's fun

Smith's affection for Georgia might have been overstated initially but I bet that Georgia is making a hard run at him again with the message "we won't lie to you like UCLA did."

Even if not an elite prospect like Smith, I do kind of wish we'd been able to get a LB in this class because LB is a position where you really don't want true freshmen playing.  Gedeon only has two years left, and then we have four LBs from the 2013 and 2014 classes who haven't really played yet (Winovich, Furbush, McCray, Wangler).  We'll need at least two of those guys to work out if we're to avoid playing true freshmen in 2016.

waiting for this- thanks Brian!

Hopefully Weber is the last Technician to pick Ohio State over Michigan for a very long time.

Roquan would be HUGE.

Thanks for posting the snippet from MichiganMan14's diary. It was tl;dr this morning before work, but I'ma checkitout. Higdon sounds like a great kid, and a great addition to the program. I feel Coach Harbaugh has recruited quality men to play football at the University of Michigan.

He repeated it throughout his presser yesterday - He wants kids that will put 100% behind their studies and football. None of these kids will ever take a down "off."

Two TEs for Urban?  I wonder how many TE catches OSU had?  I know he had Hernandez down in UF but maybe in the games I watch I just dont see the TEs used that much.

24 would seem really aggressive - you'd almost have to have Charlie Strong type attrition.

We have 15 spots now for 2016 but 1 is going to O'Korn.  So that takes us back to the current 14.  Maybe 3 guys leave after spring = 17.  Maybe 3 fifth year seniors leave after next year = 20  Maybe one medical = 21.  Still need 3 more guys to leave for 24.

Looking forward to 2017 roster we need a ton on defense in this 2016 class.  I would not be surprised to see 5-6 DBs in this class.  And 3 DTs.   Many of these DBs will immediately be in the 2 deep for 2017.  Should help us attract some elite guys who want to play right away.  DTs you'd prefer to RS if you can but a guy like Gary of course is immediate if we are so lucky.  But we'll only have Pallante, Mone, and Hurst Jr after 2016.  Need a total rebuild there.

Think you definitely need 2 RBs next year - all we will have after 2016 is Isaac and Higdon.

It would be cool to pull KJ Costello and his 2 friends Crawford and Howard (I dont know much about that Long character - i.e. if he is P5 level)

We do need to start rebuilding the OL depth as the massive 2012-2013 classes begin tor run off  and guys iin the 2016 class can at least RS one year with no pressure.

Maybe the mix is something like this -

  1. QB - Costello
  2. RB
  3. RB
  4. FB
  5. WR
  6. WR
  7. TE
  8. TE - if Wheatley is not a TE
  9. OT
  10. OG
  11. OG/C
  12. DE
  13. DE - if Wheatley is not a DE
  14. DT
  15. DT
  16. DT or LB (R. Smith in 2015 would push this to DT)
  17. LB
  18. LB
  19. S
  20. S
  21. CB
  22. CB
  23. CB

Not sure on a punter - sounds like we are going to get that one guy out of FCS, but then we need another punter after him.

assuming of course they end up with that many schollies available.  I totally agree about getting at least 2 RB's.  If they could squeeze out an extra spot, I wouldn't mind another OL either.   Normally with all the QB's, I'd say we don't need one - but HARBAUGH.  I don't want to go back to the days where we we don't have enough choices at QB and enough competition.

hokes the only coach in the history of football who did not take at least 1 QB every year - and look where his QB depth chart / production ended up.

at least 1 if not 2 QBs every single class - with very few exceptions to that rule.  transfers, injuries, and the current frequency of grad transfers will sort out the roster / extra QBs.

harbaugh understands QB is most important position on field (and across all sports), few teams have ever won much of anything with weaknesses at QB.  comforting to know the head coach will do his level best to have multiple options each year at such vital position

I will shake my internet fist if they sign any fewer than 4 OL recruits. With no RS for Mason Cole, we would have at most four RS Seniors and Juniors for the 2018 season. With normal OL attrition/predictability, you can safely assume we would need two or maybe even three players from this or the following class to play. We saw what taking 7 OL over three years did for our run game the last couple seasons.

At tackle we have Fox, LTT, Cole, JBB, Newsome, Ulizio and 2016 E. Swenson all with 3+ years of eligibilty.  It's pretty set there - they are all spread out nicely and that is 7 names for 2 starting spots for the next 3 years - basically you have 6 guys competing to start across from Cole for the next 3 years or to be his backup.  I don't think its much of a concern at T.  I assume 1-2 of those guys falls out of the rotation/injury/don't pan out but that still leave you with 4 guys for a solid 2 deep for 3 more years.

Guards and center are more of an issue.

You can allocate 2 spots (maybe 3 if you wish in this class) to guards and centers.  You have Dawson, Samuelson, Kugler and Runyan - so only 4 guys for 3 positions (2 G + 1 C) with 3+ years of eligibility.  That's where the focus for the rest of the class will be I assume with Swenson the tackle.

I think SC said he sees Ulizio more as a guard than a tackle so maybe he switches from T to G to help alleviate that issue.

I think some depends on what you have in LTT and Chris Fox.  Fox had a very serious knee injury and LTT when he showed up looked "doughy" - it's been 2 years, he should be ready to compete seriously for a backup role in 2015.  If neither of these guys start to show up in the rotation as backups at least we may have to double down on recruiting for T as it would be like having 2 Blake Bars.

OTs can often slide inside to play OG (or even OC) but the reverse is not nearly as common.

provided programs eval as OTs the longer, more athletic OL who excel in pass sets and in space vs quicker athletes, it typically makes sense to more heavily recruit those types.  and then coaches can supplement with obvious road graders sprinkled throughout.

not that its easy to stand up quick or monster DTs or pull or reach LBs in traditional OG roles, but its usually easier to shift bodies to OG for those duties than searching your roster for guys to play on the edge - so if theres surplus or imbalance, id much prefer it at OT  (although several of hokes OT recruits like fox, bars, maybe even JBB likely never have the ability to see serious clock at OT).

though watching harbaugh / drevno and company mold those OLs at stanford should offer fans much confidence that theyll find a way until they reach well-oiled machine status

How about Ed Oliver a DL from Houston ? He holds an offer, and has a highlight tape, that was over on "Touch the Banner" that makes him look like Reggie White playing against High School teams. His combination of speed, power, and quickness, has not been seen here in a long time, and he is relentless. He is listed as a DT, but if he can keep his weight at 285, where it is now, he could be the best DE we have ever had here.

Also Lavonta Taylor, the highest rated CB in the country, had high Michigan interest, and would make a fine addition to lock down one of the CB spots.

Lastly, let us not give up on Daelin Hayes, he may be a USC verbal, but if we have a better year than they do, we may be able to flip him.

We already have great coaches and support staff, but in order to be the best, you have to get some of the best players too.

and one to watch: Jango "release the" Glackin. He is 3* OLB from IMG Academy in Florida and formerly of my hometown Lebanon, Ohio. IMG is so stacked, most schools would probably take their starting 22 as a recruiting class.

almost no matter what Michael Jordan does, he will be anonymous on the internet. He could kill 5 people, burn down an orphanage, and run the world's largest meth ring and probably still only show up on Page 3 of google results for 'Michael Jordan'

And we all know no one actually goes past Page 1

I'm intrigued by Corley.  Already 6'2" 180lbs, so it sounds like he could be mature physically as a true freshman.  Don't know what the talent evaluators have to say about him, but he sounds like the type of instate guy we'd like to hold onto.

that dude demetric felton is legit, hopefully getting in early pays off with him.

obviously many prospects can appear faster and more agile on tape vs lesser competition, just as some kids talents do not always translate when jumping levels and increasing competition - but this kid should be a playmaker.

hed be a great slot WR / offensive weapon and give michigan some quicks theyre currently lacking on offense.

i think he moves kind of like jourdan lewis on tape, if making a um comparison

Hi folks,

Sorry this isn't a new thread but I understand I need a certain number of MGoPoints to do so...

I was wondering - if Michigan is truly seeking a late-addition punter - *Does anyone here know the contact info of the football recruiting office?

I live next door to a true under-the-radar college-ready punter, Austin Rowley, class of 2015 (about 6'0, 175 lbs) who attends Helix High School (which produced Reggie Bush).  He has a reputation here of having a legit Division1A/FBS leg, averaging (his senior year) 46 yards/punt with a 4.5 second hang-time.

Every now and then he'd play around our cul de sak just booming punts the likes of which I've only seen at college/NFL games - and everyone else just gawks.  He's a very high character kid (leader in the high school community) and someone I'd actually like my own young sons to turn out like when they're his age

He hasn't yet signed with a school but is interested in a possible opportunity at Michigan and wanted to know the best way to contact our recruiting folks.  I know this is a longshot at best, but felt it didn't hurt to ask...  Thanks!

Hayes has said repeatedly that he "needs to get out of the midwest." I'm not saying he'll absolutely sign with USC, but at least right now, he's adamant about getting out of Michigan.

Also, the kid hasn't played football in almost two years. He was injured as a sophomore and transferring back and forth as a junior.

I try and not get caught up in all of this recruiting business, but man am I effin excited about this football season.  Can't wait to see how our boys look this fall with HARBAUGH at the helm. Been reading the blog for a while, and I'm just now going to start posting.  Enjoy reading all of your posts, they make me laugh my ass off most of the time!

Why would UM continue to pursue DeWeaver? The DeWeaver de-committ seems like a mutual parting of ways, especially on the heels of a meeting with Harbaugh.

280.15 points is what the 21 man class totalled out to be. I went to 2015 to see how we'd compare?

6th. Just over OSU be the slimmest of margins (279.83)

Totally unplanned, but pretty cool to see.

I had..

  1. QB - Costello
  2. RB - Moran
  3. RB - Falcon
  4. WR - Crawford
  5. WR - Corley
  6. TE - Farrell
  7. TE - Asiasi
  8. OL - Swenson
  9. OL - Jordan
  10. OL - Lukusa
  11. DE - Murphy
  12. DE - Kareeem
  13. DT - Gary
  14. DT - Onwenu
  15. LB - Harding
  16. LB - Hayes
  17. LB - Borland
  18. DB - Hill
  19. DB - Butler
  20. DB - Rene
  21. DB - Vance

...so I could've been higher with a FB and/or a punter.

Edit: Adding David Reese out of Farmington to play FB and a 2-star kicker puts us at 281.47
