A Rumor, Dispatched

Track Meet 1, Touchdown Jesus 0

On Tuesday, a tweet appeared in my mentions, seemingly out of the blue, asking how long it would be until I wrote the "Goodbye" post for Shaun Crawford. This caused a great deal of confusion until I noticed the thread on The Wolverine's message board that discussed "slight rumblings" from Notre Dame posters that Crawford would visit for the Irish's spring game this weekend ($). That, of course, would be a bit of an issue with the Michigan coaches regarding his status as a commit.

While Tim Sullivan rightfully attached a healthy amount of skepticism to the rumor, noting Crawford is scheduled to run in a track meet in the Cleveland area on the day of ND's spring game, it wasn't debunked entirely. The internets, as they are wont to do, took it and ran. Well, for a bit.

247's Steve Lorenz left no room for speculation ($):

Shaun Crawford: Shaun has a track meet this weekend. He is not visiting Notre Dame.

Sam Webb also posted a thread on the GBW premium board stating Crawford's camp touched base with the coaches and said he isn't visiting South Bend ($).

In the interest of objectivity, I'll note that Crawford showed a great deal of interest in Notre Dame before his Michigan commitment, and back in December he considered visiting Ohio State before discussing the matter with U-M's coaching staff. Until he says so himself, the possibility that he wants to look around can't be eliminated; by that same token, I'll believe he's willing to risk his spot in the class to visit another school when a trip actually materializes.

[Hit THE JUMP for the latest on Jake Fruhmorgen, a big-time weekend visitor, 2015 quarterback targets, spring game visit reactions, and more.]

Fruhmorgen Deciding Today

Now that Sterling Jenkins has cut his list to Ohio State and Penn State, four-star FL OT Jake Fruhmorgen is the top offensive lineman on Michigan's board, but that probably won't last the afternoon. He's announcing his decision between Clemson, Alabama, and Michigan at 3:15, and the Tigers are the heavy favorite to land him—multiple outlets aren't even bothering to list U-M as a finalist.

If Fruhmorgen commits elsewhere—and it'd be a massive upset if he pledged to Michigan—then U-M's top target at tackle will be VA four-star Grant Newsome, who's slated to visit Ann Arbor within the next couple of weeks, per Steve Lorenz ($). The Wolverines have plenty of competition for Newsome, though they appear to be in good position with him.

Big-Time Weekend Visitor

247's Clint Brewster reported that four-star TN LB Joshua McMillon will take an visit to Michigan this weekend, staying both Friday and Saturday nights. His coach, according to the linked (free) article, is a Michigan alum; Alabama is currently considered the favorite to land the coveted linebacker prospect, however, and it'll take a good deal of work from the coaches to contend for his services.

Spring Game Visit Reactions

Four-star IL WR Miles Boykin was one of the top prospects on campus for the spring whatever-that-was, and he told Tim Sullivan that Michigan is still in the process of evaluating him ($):

"Basically we're just talking, not even about football," Boykin explained of his interaction with Mallory. "We're trying to build up the relationship. When I visited yesterday, he said that they really liked me on film and he's going to talk to the offensive coordinator and the receivers coach and the tight ends coach.

"I got to meet [Hecklinski and Ferrigno] at the game, and It was my first time really talking to those two. It was really nice; they're good guys. They're going to have a meeting Monday. They're going to talk about me there."

At 6'3", 215, Boykin is being recruited at both wide receiver and tight end depending on the program, and Sullivan said Monday's meeting was to determine which position Michigan would recruit him for, and if he should get an offer. Thus far, there's been no word of an offer, but given his talent and offer sheet I wouldn't be surprised if one goes out sooner or later.

Northville OL David Moorman has been a consistent presence on campus, and Michigan's stance on his recruitment has been just as consistent—on his visit, the coaches reiterated to Moorman that they'd like to see him at camp before an offer goes out, per GBW's Kyle Bogenschutz ($). Based on this quote, it seems fair to extrapolate that he'd jump on a Michigan offer if one came, and he's also planning for the distinct possibility that doesn't happen:

“Hopefully June comes along and either some coaches will tell me it’s not going to happen or some schools will tell me they’re going to offer me. So, hopefully by the end of June I can have a pretty good understanding of what offers I’m going to have and hopefully I can make my decision pretty fast over summer.”

Michigan also hosted three-star AZ QB Brian Lewerke, who told 247's Clint Brewster that the Wolverines would be among his leaders if they offered ($):

"The coaches said I'm one their top guys, they just want to wait a little longer before sending out an offer."

"Michigan would be in my top three of four schools if they offered. Michigan State, Michigan, Arizona State, and Florida are my top schools in no order."

Lewerke said prior to his visit that he'd like to make a decision within the next month. I've heard word that Michigan State may in fact be the team to beat after his recent visit there, with ASU also a serious contender. My best guess is he'll have committed elsewhere before Michigan is ready and willing to send out an offer.

More 2015 QB Updates

2015 offered QB David Sills told Scout's Greg Biggins that he still considers himself a USC commit, though he is "looking around," and Michigan is among the other programs standing out to him ($):

Over the last two weeks, Sills has visited Maryland, West Virginia, Penn State and also checked out Michigan last month.

“Michigan and Penn State really stood out to me,” Sills said. “I have two former teammates [Ed: Freddy Canteen and Brandon Watson] at Michigan so I have a nice support circle there and they’re recruiting me pretty good. I love the coaches at both schools and I had a great time at both places as well.

Visits to Alabama and Mississippi State are on tap for this weekend, and then Sills says he'd like to make a final decision in the summer before enrolling early at the school of his choice. Penn State, if they come through with an offer, appears to have some momentum here.

Meanwhile, Brother Rice QB Alex Malzone should know whether or not a Michigan offer is forthcoming pretty soon, and he told Rivals's Josh Helmholdt that he'll throw for several schools, U-M included, later this month ($):

"I plan on [April] 17th and 18th being days I throw for colleges," Malzone said. "There are going to be about 15 colleges that come to see me throw during the open period in April and early May."

Among the schools Malzone expects in to see him throw are Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Boston College, Vanderbilt, Tennessee, Kentucky, Minnesota and Indiana.

The coaches have long maintained that they'd like to see Malzone throw in person before extending him an offer. If one comes, the Wolverines would be the heavy favorite to land him.

Etc.

In an article by Rivals's Adam Gorney, four-star CA WDE Keisean Lucier-South maintained that if he can't make it to Michigan in the summer, they'll be "seriously considered" for an official visit in the fall ($).

Not Michigan-related, but perhaps Pat Fitzgerald will rethink his stance on the player's union after seeing this quote from five-star WDE Jashon Cornell?

The prior visits to Evanston have intrigued Cornell, but his interest has been furthered by what is going on at the school recently.

"I was looking at them for awhile, but it's opened my eyes up because of all the new stuff they have been putting in that program," he said. "With the new football facilities they are building they are getting a private beachfront at the school. All of their facilities are getting upgraded right now. Just knowing that they are working on that union thing, that sounds like a cool thing.

Yes, the cynic in me truly believes that coaches could come around on player unionization when they realize it has the potential to be a dynamite recruiting tool.

If you missed it, Brandon posted updates on the board this week for 2016 QB Mikale Washington and 2017 RB Dylan Moses.

What's the hold-up on hearing if Jake Fruhmorgen is a Michigan verbal commitment??!

/s

Seriously, though, I would love to see him in the Maize and Blue, and I hope there's a chance...

Dear Jashon,

NU already has a private beach. Did you mean exclusive for athletes/football only? Trust me, that won't be fun. You want non-athlete girls included in your beach time. Also, my GF was a lifeguard on the NU beach. I think I used it all of 10 days in 5 years of school because it is NEVER warm enough to sit on the sand and good luck with 50 degree water that might get to 60 in a hot July. Forget about August, you will be in Kenosha doing 2 a days. In summary, 2 business weeks of beach days over 5 years should not be a compelling factor in your recruitment.

Signed,

Fmr NU Athlete.

I can't be the only person sitting at my desk quietly FREAKING OUT about the fact that we keep missing on 2015 commits right? Considering how much turnover we're going to have after this year we need all the help we can get.

If I'm completely off base, I would love for someone to slap me and tell me to get my sht together.

did you watch their team last season ?  it should not be surprising especially kids heading west or south instead of ann arbor.  nice weather, much hotter chicks, similar top notch facilities, crazy football culture, and currently much better draft results and showcase teams.  i def see the appeal.  start really panicking when all um main targets start heading to nd, msu, osu, psu, not to southern schools.  the novelty factor hoke had going for him as a "new coach making moves and shaking up michigan" has worn off in many kids minds (franklin is a good coach but hes currently got the same juice and freshness hoke had 3 yrs ago and that will likely continue until his teams lie down on 13 or so saturdays).  most recruits vividly recall the worst OL in the country and michigan history and the D collapsing in 4th quarter against mediocre squads rather than pretty lucky 2011 sugar bowl win and um's last B1G title when they were like 5 yrs old.  unfortunately last year really crushed any positive mo this team had and consequently they lost commits from arguably the best RB and WR in the entire country - not to mention the awful showing very likely costing them the top 2 DL prospects on their entire 2014 board.  hoke and crew did a poor job last year, even given the limited talent and thin depth they had, and had to recover and rengage many kids / families and re-pitch um.  the CB from va finally stopped the bleeding but this should be no surprise.  obviously kids only get 3-5 years in school and most want to win, play in big games / bowl games, and showcase their talents for pro scouts...no elite players want rebuilding projects during their limited tenures (which is why i really respect peppers for staying true to his word and wanting to be part of rebuilding a devastated program bc he easily couldve jumped ship and spent 3 yrs at some factory in the south and went pro).  last year hoke had the type season he really could not afford and now this year has become the year - brandon probably keeps him regardless of record but another poor showing will crush recruiting beyond repair (at least during hokes tenure).  they need results on the field this fall or this staff better settle in to coaching nd's and msu's leftovers

Do you all think the gig is up on Hoke and recruiting? In the past, he has landed the meat of his classes early, including the top guys. He has not showed himself as a closer. Do you think the last two seasons have caught up to him with recruits?

Yup, a 9-10 win season will pick things back up for sure. Many people have questions about Hoke, but he can recruit. The momentum of the 11 wins in 2011 basically carried the recruiting for 2 years, in my opinion. A 7-6 season will definitely grind things to a halt so results on the field will immediately provide results on the recruiting trail.

1. Completely different recruiting year. Very small class means that offers are more selective.

2. The local talent doesn't appear to be as plentiful as in the last couple of years, especially in Michigan.

3. Serious question - How would Hoke ever have the opportunity to be known as a closer when he only has 1-2 spots open by Thanksgiving every year?

4. Urban and Hoke have the same amount of bowl wins and B1G Championships at their current schools so.... is the gig up with Urban since he hasn't won 2 National Championships and 2 B1G Championships already. Wasn't that the expectation?

Sorry to sound like an ass, but there weren't many of us here that thought Hoke was going to be wildly successful within the first 4-5 years. There is plenty of time left in this cycle to add quality recruits.

I would only be worried if kids left Michigan after a visit and had meh things to say about the experience.

Honest question, do you think Ohio could keep every player in Ohio from going to that school up north? whether their parents went there or not? Another honest question. If your son wanted to go to TSUN because of the depth chart being so deep at Ohio he may never see the field, would you honor his wishes or would you tell him about your thoughts on whether Hoke would be their the next five years, and advise against that?

If my kid had an offer from UM and wanted to go, I wouldn't try to dissuade him. UM is a great school academically and he would have great opportunities after. That would be my first priority. If he asked me what I thought about Hoke, I'd express concern that he may not be there, but I wouldn't worry about it as much because he'd still get a great education at UM no matter who the coach is. And OSU will never keep every kid from leaving. OSU will keep most of the ones they want, but there will always be the occasional kid who wants to do something different.

3. I get the opinion that Hoke can't close from here. Seems like everyone here complains that Hole never fills those last few spots with the big names he's targeting and posters say he doesn't close. 4. The expectation wasn't for 2 championships because we weren't eligible for the post season Urban's first year. He exceeded expectations by going undefeated, though. And Hoke is a good coach, but no matter what he won't have as long a leash with recruits as Urban. Urban's got proven national success. I agree with you overall, I wasn't trying to imply Hoke won't recruit well. But I do want Michigan fans' opinions on it. Do you think Hoke is kept on if they go 7-6 again?

"Until he says so himself, the possibility that he wants to look around can't be eliminated." I'm curious, did the rumor of him visiting ND come directly from Crawford himself? I mean until he says so himself we shouldn't even be having this discussion. Grown men spreading rumors always makes me cringe.

equal high rankings. Even if UM takes ten players all four stars they would rank at say 29. Then a team that took 14/3 stars would rank 25. Honest question. Which class do you prefer?

Man these recruiting updates are depressing. It really seems as though the recruits have lost some confidence in the staff. This is the year Hoke has to prove himself as a big time coach. All we've seen since he's been here is an inability to execute anything that he preaches. Manball, physicalness, toughness are all things that are yet to actually prove to be strengths of his teams at Michigan. They've been pretty inept at running the ball, they haven't been able to shut down any competent running game, and they've had zero success at winning any game on the road against a quality opponent. It's been painful to watch his teams get physically and schematically dominated by teams with no where near the resources he's been provided. These are all things these recruits have to see and if not you know the opposing coaches are pointing it out. I really want him to succeed as a coach at Michigan due to what he stands for as a leader and how he wants his team to play. He has quality depth at almost every position now and the program seems to be heading in the right direction on paper, but if we don't see signs that these kids are picking up what he's putting down Brandon really should think hard about making a change next year. Come on Brady lets get this train back on the tracks.
