Injuries

Mike Martin and David Molk sprained ankles [Ed: PANIC!!!!], but both both should be fine [Ed: Cease PANIC]. Martavious Odoms broke his foot, no word on how long he's out other than "extended." James Rogers's injury against MSU was just cramps.

Carvin Johnson was a bit physically limited this past week, and his knee brace has been a hindrance. He'll be a bit better this week. "I don't know when he can take that brace off - I'm sure he wants to take it off today - but the trainers and doctors will determine that.

Shaw was still a little less than 100% against MSU. He should be 100% this week.

Toussaint - Won't be able to play this week. Rotator cuff injury, doesn't need surgery but does need rest. "I don't think it's mental at all. It's just bad luck." Reminds him of Brandon Minor.

MSU

Teaching Moments - "Probably we have a lot more teaching moments than I'd like, for sure, out of that ballgame." Team was just off in execution. State had something to do with that, but some were their own mistakes. D - "Our young guys are gonna make mistakes, but we've gotta get better fundamentally." Need to remember fundamentals, not just game prep, etc.

Didn't think there were more designed handoffs than there were earlier in the year. "They were playing us a certain way in the beginning, so there were probably more runs for the backs."

Dropped passes, a couple missed reads from Denard. Can't do that against a good opponent. More dropped passes in that game than there probably was the rest of the season.

Did MSU try new things to confuse Denard? "No. Not that I've seen and that we saw on film."

MSU D - "They've got good players; they played well. They moved their front some and they brought their safeties down. I thought they tackled pretty well and broke on the ball well."

Great support at the University, friends, family, colleagues. "Everybody wants the same thing here," and nobody's happy with a loss. "We lost to Michigan State, what, you wanna hang me off the building now? I mean, there might be a few people who want to do that, but that's the same people that probably wanted to do that after the first five games too, they just weren't saying it publicly."

After Denard's picks, RR talked to him about what he saw, and he got on the phone to coach Magee - but they do that on good plays as well.

"We didn't execute as well. They had something to do with that and we had something to do with that as well." Moving the ball on the ground.

Team

Mixing up defensive personnel - "In the secondary, our only change is more freshmen playing... ready or not, here they are." Mike Jones would have played a lot at linebacker if he wasn't out for the season. "We'll see what happens this week in practice" as far as personnel changes at linebacker - need more production.

Denard very competitive, may have been pressing too much. "This is his first year as a starter... in all reality, he should be a redshirt freshman but he he had to play some last year. We're not going to panic." He's made tremendous strides from last year, and he'll be even better in the next couple years.

Younger guys typically aren't team leaders, but Denard is one still. "I'm not overly concerned with guys taking charge in the locker room and all that." Only need to worry about weak leadership when effort and focus wane, which hasn't been an issue.

Cullen Christian, Courtney Avery, and Terrence Talbott would be redshirting if there were enough numbers: "No question." They've been forced into duty this year and are growing up. "To play this many true freshmen on defense at this level, it doesn't happen very often."

"Some of the issues we have aren't gonna get solved overnight. We've just gotta minimize them the best we can, so we can still win ballgames."

Talent issues on D - "We're not as talented maybe as we'd like to be or we're gonna be." It's not just about recruiting, but also development - 4-5 true freshmen in the secondary, plus Carvin Johnson, Jibreel Black. They haven't had a chance to be developed yet. "Our development part with them and development of them in the weight room, and the development of them learning the system in college football and everything that goes on with that" can't happen until spring.

Team is resolved after a loss - their focus has been good, they'll be resilient and move forward instead of dwelling. Sometimes younger guys can move on quicker. No new leaders develop after a loss like this. "I'm not too much worried about that. I'm worried about them fixing what we need to fix and executing better."

"We've gotta be able to be patient." Don't want to press too much if they aren't having immediate success on offense. Need to remember to take care of the ball and make better decisions. "You've gotta be more decisive in your execution, and not try to force things."

Talks with defensive coaches about schemes, and a bit of fundamentals. "I'm obviously a lot more involved with the offense." Doesn't want to get spread too thin with all three phases of the ball. The coaches are frustrated that they aren't making the progress they want, but there are little signs of improvement.

Scheme has been simplified as much as possible to help the young guys. "If you're too simple, they'll find a way to go against you." You have to be more multiple. Iowa is one of the few teams that's able to beat you using mostly one defensive scheme.

Recruiting

Recruiting class to develop needs "We feel that's going really well." Particularly on defense: "This recruiting class will help us get those numbers... to that end." There's another 9-10-11 spots in the recruiting class, looking at positions where they're lacking depth.

Recruiting - Last couple classes were negatively impacted by drama around the program, but the coaches did a great job. "There's a lot of negative recruiting that goes on - and we've got a great thing to sell - but you've still got to fight it and our coaches have done a good job."

Doesn't want his coaches to fight fire with fire in negative recruiting "I'd rather just sell all the good things we have here." Will compare things like schemes, but doesn't talk negatively about other institutions. "It's not as bad in our league, in the Big Ten, than it is in other leagues."

"Sometimes you have a guy that comes into your program and he's on scholarship and maybe he didn't turn out to be as good or able to play at the level you want, but he does everything else right. You're not gonna boot him off your team for that reason."

Iowa, Etc.

Iowa has a veteran D, they have had two weeks to get ready for M. They're a great defense. "Their front four is as good as anybody's in the country." They'll occasionally blitz, but they don't need to in order to get pressure.

"Big physical team, Stanzi's an experienced guy, they've got some really explosive wide receivers. They're very good, and I think they're a top ten team in the country."

"We've got two really good tight ends in Webb and Koger. They're experienced guys." They've been playing well. "Their toughest challenge [blocking] comes this week" against Adrian Clayborn and the rest of Iowa's front.

In addition to game prep, the bye week will be used a lot to work fundamentals, particularly with young guys. This will be a normal week of game prep for Iowa.

Will watch film of last year's game against Iowa. Iowa has had two weeks to prepare though, and gotten a head start on preparation.

Will Iowa's run game mean more 4-man fronts? "We've got the ability to do that. We've done that a bit in every game." The key is to still be able to get off blocks, no matter how many linemen you have.

Obviously none of us here want to hang RR off a building, but I'd like to see this team breathing fire come Saturday.

Sounds like losing Mike Jones was another significant blow to the D. Keep up the good work, Tim.

Oh, and please stay healthy Mike Martin and David Molk.

Seems to me like there were a lot of answers today that skirted the edge of "do you see what I have to work with?" in there, and how young the team is. "Mike Jones would be playing a lot" and "all those freshman you see out there should be redshirting" are pretty clearly in that vein. While I appreciate the honesty, it seems like the man is really on the edge of his cool right now.

Not that I blame him, of course. The pressure cooker is on high right around now.

I'm not bothered by the freshmen comment. No matter how talented freshmen are, they're still freshmen. There's no substitute for experience, and there's a huge bump in performance between year one and year two. Pointing out a player's inexperience isn't a shot against their talent or their effort.

Are the writers forbidden from asking pointed questions about certain players?  There was some vague reference to Demens and Moundros, but nothing direct and no follow up.  Can't someone ask the question that we want asked . . . "Why is Obi still starting!"  Better yet, "Why is Moundros listed as the starter at MLB on the Depth Chart for the 7th week in a row when he never sees the field?"

MSU where they showed Martin on the sideline grabbing his leg right below his knee, I think it was right after he took it in the knee. They stayed on him long enough to show when he got up and he shouted a few times and was clearly pissed, I remember seeing this because I think him shouting like that got the attention of some of the other players on the sideline.

Sounds to me like he's absolutely begging for someone to show something in practice so he can move Ezeh to the 2nd team.  Come on Demens, show us something.

To me what kind of defense they run as long as they keep Roh on the D-line.  I honestly think him dropping back into coverage has harmed the defense more than it's helped.

"The coaches are frustrated that they aren't making the progress they want."

I actually like this quote.  RR is acknowledging that the team should be further along than they currently are.

All of the other "we're young.  Mike Jones isn't playing.  We need more depth.  We are a work in progress" stuff, I could live without.  Not saying that he is not correct, but please stop using these same excuses every press conference.

Could you imagine if Lloyd came out after the Horror and said, "I am frustrated too.  I really thought that Johnny Sears would have been a better player.  And our linebackers just haven't learned how to stop the spread, despite being toasted by is 3 or 4  times last season."

Sorry, I know, not a popular viewpoint, but I am just very down about this game still, so the excuses are getting old.  Can't take losing to Sparty every year - OSU I can understand, because they have been dominant this decade, but Sparty?

The thing is that the defensive struggles are due to an extreme talent deficiency and inexperience, and that doesn't change week-to-week. So what do you expect him to say? The way the press is, they'll ask about the defense every week, and Rodriguez doesn't have anything to say that hasn't already been said. This is a depleted and inexperienced defense. There's not much more to it than that.

Also, keep in mind that this isn't the Sparty of old. MSU was perpetually dysfunctional for most of Lloyd's tenure, so losing three in a row to John L. Smith or Bobby Williams would have been unimaginable. But this is the first time State has had a competent head coach since Nick Saban. They've been to a bowl game every year since D'Antonio took over. So it's not just us, it's them too.

I hate to agree with you, and give Sparty any credit...but there is some truth to that.  Sparty has not been great, but they have been decent enough to win some football games the past couple of years.  We, on the other hand, have been abysmal.  This is our first time in three years where we had a team that (we think) is even good.  And they have a team that looks like it should win almost all of their football games, looking at the rest of their schedule.  Iowa is the toughest game they have left.  The rest is largely against the bottom of the big 10.  Now, they may have their usual post-Michigan meltdown, but they may not.

If they get past Purdue, Minnesota, Illinois, Northwestern, and a very weak-looking Penn State and still lose to Iowa, that could be an 11-1 Sparty.  That would be one of the best Sparty teams in a long time.  I'm not really hoping it would happen, but it does shed a little light on the possibility that we got beaten by a better team.  It's sad to think that MSU would have a better team than us the past 3 years, but that may be the reality of transition and attrition.  It's frustrating to be a Michigan fan and have these things affect you, but..hey, Denard.

I am so glad for Dave Brandon, and can't say more strongly how I want RR & his staff to be given two more years before evaluations. It just kills RR to lose, and to lose this way.

^^ Sorry - momentarily brain-hacked by Los Barcos I think.

I don't know exactly why - but I love this coach and team more than any since Bo's '85 team.  I hope he/they are given the chance to succeed.

That is all.

Are you sure it wasn't "sprained knee"? ABC had a completely clear shot of the MSU kid diving into Martin's leg and Martin's knee bending in a way your knee isn't supposed to bend. If Rodriguez really did say Martin has a sprained ankle, mark me down as a raised eyebrow.

"We lost to Michigan State, what, you wanna hang me off the building now?"

What was this in response to?

Talks with defensive coaches about schemes, and a bit of fundamentals. "I'm obviously a lot more involved with the offense." Doesn't want to get spread too thin with all three phases of the ball.

Well, his responsibility is all three phases of the ball.

Maybe one day you will all see the clear difference between Bo (and his coaches) and Rodriguez.  Bo took responsibility.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but i always thought that it wasnt the head coach's job to coach all phases of the team. The head coach is a leader, and in RR's case, a genious on one side of the ball. That is why he is involved with the offense so much. Spending more time with the defense wont make them any better. I dont think he is a better defensive coach than greg robinson, despite all that has gone on on that side of the ball

after MSU kicked our ass.  That bodes ill.

Regarding the rest of the conference, sometimes a leader needs to take responsibility even if  it was not strictly speaker, his fault (David Brandon recognizes this) and hence I think  the  "look at how young our defense is, it's not my fault,"  stuff sounds like whining.  However, it's true and I think RR is just honest to a fault here, I don't think he actually has some motive to skirt responsibility.

In favor of his honesty, I am  really glad RR acknowledge that his decision to punt was a mistake, because it spared us 8 diaries and about 60 board topics arguing that it was in fact the right decision.

Man I gotta agree with some of this post.

Bo did something every day in practice for tUoOS.

RR treats each Saturday like just another opponent.  Well, no it's not.  Moo U. is a rivalry game.  tUoOS is a rivalry game.  You have lost five straight now.  Cooper didn't get it either  and look where that got him.  What's the first thing Tressel said when hired?  Yep, something about Michigan.  He got it and look at his record.  Dantionio's countdown clock is lame but he gets it and has won 3x now!

Stop with this gee-aww-golly-shucks routine and kick Dantionio's and Tressel's worst-state-ever asses!  These games are NOT just another Saturday!  BTW, would it kill you to recruit someone bigger than 5'10" and 175???  Seesh.  That's what I am.

I think this whole line of thought is ridiculous.  When you have a team with this many young players, you spend every free second in practice teaching fundamentals, and trying to move up to schemes that complement your basic set.  Its not like RRod and team could have magically installed the MSU silver bullet if they only would have cared a little bit harder.  Blah blah blah, not a michigan man, rabble rabble rabble.

I am an Eagles fan (my screenname is a bit outdated) and our head coach, Andy Reid, does not coach defense.  We had the late, great Jim Johnson (RIP) for that.  In their prime, the Eagles were a dangerous west coast offense featuring McNabb and Westbrook and a dominant defense.

If Rich Rod could just focus on the offense with Magee and get a genius d-coordinator ala Monte Kiffin or Will Muschamp (not one of them, just someone like them), it would go a long way.

I still think we would have been better off keeping Scott Shafer.  Regardless, if Rich can focus on the offense and we have someone else take care of defense (schemes, recruiting and coaching), it will be good for the team.
