Preseason Blogpoll Draft Ballot Comment Count

Tim

This is admittedly quite hasty. Please, please, please tear it apart so I have a decent entry for the final ballot. I haven't looked at any preseason magazines, and I threw this together in just a few minutes from memory. I'd run down a few of the things I'm not sure about... but there are too many of them.

Nebraska should be higher (returning a good number of offensive and defensive players) and Oklahoma should be lower (though I admittedly don't know what they are going to look like this year). Everything else seems fine for being the crapshoot a preseason ballot always is.

1. Their defense blows.

2.  They haven't won 10 games in almost a decade and somehow they're a top 10 team?

3.  If you're basing this poll on potential, then I guess I see your point, but I still don't see how their defense doesn't lose them at least 4 games this year.

Florida, Florida State, and Washington strike me as too high.  Probably UGA too, but I'm waiting to get a sense of how panicked Doug at Hey Jenny Slater is before forming an opinion on them.

Generally, the preseason poll is a crapshoot, so your guess is as good as anyones.

From top to bottom:

I think Wisconsin, Oregon, and FSU are too high.  Wisconsin doesn't have Top 6 talent, and usually struggles against anyone good.  Oregon's had a little bit too much drama, and I think improving teams at Stanford, Washington, and UCLA combined with a difficult PAC-10 slate are going to leave them at least two losses.  FSU has been overrated for years, I'm not sure the transition to Jimbo Fisher is worth that.

I'd move Texas, Miami, and Georgia up some.  They've got a ton of returning talent.

Penn State is going to have serious QB issues and loses a lot on defense.  I'm not sure they're a Top 25 team.

Nevada seems like a fringe team at best.

Left out:

1.  Georgia Tech(!)

2.  LSU

3.  West Virginia

I also think MSU could be a fringe team by the end of the season, should things fall right.

Why does everyone have Boise State ranked so high?  Because they beat on a schedule of baby seals every year and end up with a gaudy record?

If Boise played Texas, who would your money be on?

If Michigan played this schedule, what would you expect our record to be:

Oregon

Miami (OH)

Fresno State

Bowling Green

UC-Davis

Tulsa

Hawaii

San Jose State

Louisiana Tech

Idaho

Utah State

Nevada

New Mexico State

Boise played a one-game regular season.  Put them in Michigan's schedule from last year. do you still think they go undefeated?  Do they even have just one-loss?

Either 12-2 or 11-3, but the games would have been much, much closer. Don't forget that Miami was almost held out of a NC game in 2000 due to SOS, then was almost held out in 2001 because of it and they ended up wrecking Nebraska. SOS is not everything.

You're bringing up schedules that contained numerous games against BCS competition.  They were weak compared to the other candidates.

Boise played one BCS team.  They played one team of any value.  If Michigan would win 10 or 11 games with that schedule, what value is Boise State's 12-0?

If they play Michigan's schedule last year... even just ND, Penn State, Iowa, Ohio State, there's no chance they go undefeated, and in my opinion would likely have at least 2-3 losses.  They're not the 4th best team in the country.

They went 12-0 against one team and a bunch of cannon fodder.  We're obviously in the wrong conference.

(M can't go 12-2 or 11-3, that's a 12-game schedule)

They return 10 starters on each side of the ball and, without starting an entirely seperate debate...think they deserved a shot at the tide last year.  They were certainly the most complete team I saw last year outside of Bama.  I don't see why they shouldn't be #2 preseason.
