HANDOCALYPSE THURSDAY

Five-star DE Da'Shawn Hand announces his college decision between Michigan, Alabama, and Florida on Thursday at noon—today, Rivals revealed that the announcement will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network and streamed on Rivals.

It's not worth delving too deeply into speculation when we'll know Hand's decision so soon; it appears that his decision will come down to Michigan or Alabama—while the Wolverines haven't exactly been tearing things up, his visit to Florida came just in time to see Will Muschamp's seat go from "hot" to "scalding". Remember Notre Dame? Hopefully he does, too.

I'll quickly address that the Alabama Scout board has a rumor that Hand is down to Alabama and Florida, and that rumor has been shot down by at least one credible source. You'll probably hear a lot of stuff like this before Thursday, and given how little Hand has been willing to reveal throughout the recruiting process, it'll all be educated guesses at best, total BS at worst.

If you want a more complete breakdown, 247 has a free primer detailing the positives/negatives for each school.

McDowell Speaks

A free 247 article on Malik McDowell's Army All-American jersey presentation features more quotes from McDowell than we've seen in a while:

“I never could say (Michigan) was on top but they’re one of my favorite schools,” McDowell said. “Ohio State has always been one of my favorite schools. Michigan State has been impressing me ever since I got my offer from them.”

The Wolverines were one of the first schools to extend a scholarship to McDowell and the relationship continues to grow.

“That was like my second offer,” McDowell said. “It was a big deal. We keep in touch a lot. I like Coach (Greg) Mattison and I’m real cool with Coach (Brady) Hoke. I just really like their whole coaching staff.”

McDowell visited Ohio State for the Penn State game, received a visit from Mark Dantonio last week, and was reportedly in attendance at the Nebraska game on Saturday. He's still discussing setting up an official visit to Florida on Thanksgiving (to watch them get crushed by Florida State, in all likelihood) and mentions Alabama, LSU, and Oregon as other potential official visit destinations.

[Hit THE JUMP for a must-read piece on Detroit recruits from TomVH, new offers in the 2015 and 2016 classes, Jabrill Peppers highlights, and a roundup of last weekend's commit stats.]

READ THIS

TomVH uses the childhood of Jayru Campbell and interviews with a couple inner-city Detroit high school coaches to paint a disheartening—and simultaneously uplifting—picture of what these kids must overcome just to make it out:

Of the 45 players on the King team last season, only three went home every day to households with a mother and a father. Some had one parent, some stayed with grandparents and some stayed wherever they could for a few weeks at a time.

Talking about his success stories, [King assistant coach Terel] Patrick recalls an emotional text message from former player Mycial Allen, who signed with Northern Illinois in 2013.

When Allen arrived on campus, he pulled his new jersey over his head and texted his former coach to thank him for everything he had done to get Allen to this point. But also to tell him that he loved him.

"I was just saying I appreciate all the things he did for me in high school on and off the field. For being a mentor for me in my life," Allen said. "I was just happy. He played a major role throughout my career and he's part of the family."

Allen was one of the 42 who didn't live with his mother and father. In fact, he never knew what it was like to have both parents in the same house.

This is some remarkable work from Tom and I hope you'll take the time to read the whole thing.

Jabrill Peppers Remains Good At Football

Michigan's do-everything five-star commit led the way for Paramus Catholic with four first-half touchdowns—a short rush, two long receptions, and a 48-yard pick six—in a 44-6 victory over Bergen Catholic to cap the regular season. Here's one of the touchdown catches, a spectacular diving effort after a double move:

This game recap features video of Peppers's other three scores, as well as clips of his second-half forced fumble and second interception.

Moe Ways tallied eight receptions for 190 yards and three touchdowns in Detroit Country Day's 49-27 playoff win over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep; Tim Sullivan was there to catch the action and came away saying Ways's primary area for improvement has become a strength ($):

There has been a major question about Ways' hands in the past. There should not be anymore. On this night, he was catching balls high over the middle - including several behind him - without any bobbles or "fighting the ball." The accuracy of his quarterback Tyler Wiegers was only OK on this night, but Ways made him look excellent. Whather it's mastering the over-the-shoulder deep ball, a screen pass in traffic, or even a sideline route, Ways made every catch asked of him.

Tim has seen Ways multiple times in the last year and notes consistent improvement; he looks like another very nice recruiting find by the coaching staff.

Wilton Speight continued his recent hot streak with a 15-of-25, 245-yard, three-touchdown performance to spearhead Collegiate's 27-14 triumph over Flint Hill.

Damien Harris is Damien Harris and therefore scored four touchdowns; his overall production was a totally disappointing six carries for 85 yards and two TDs, two catches for 21 yards and a TD, and a 75-yard punt return touchdown. Madison Southern advanced to the second round of the playoffs with a 49-6 blowout of Letcher County.

I wasn't able to track down stats for other Michigan commits, several of whom have already bowed out of their respective playoff brackets; here's what I could find on the teams that are still alive:

  • East Lake (Mason Cole, George Campbell) capped off their first perfect regular season (10-0) with a 54-0 blowout of St. Petersburg, their fourth shutout this year; on the season, the Eagles have outscored their opponents 472-56. Not bad.
  • Kenton (Noah Furbush) advanced to Ohio's Division IV semifinals with a 58-14 win over Galion; their quarterback, Grant Sherman*, passed for 510 yards and eight touchdowns... in the first half. Mah gawd.
  • St. Edward (Shaun Crawford), the top seed in Ohio's top division, dispatched their first round opponent Shaker Heights to the tune of 49-0. Check the URL of that story if you think this was at all surprising.
  • Huber Heights Wayne (Tyree Kinnel) defeated first-round opponent Hilliard Darby 37-7.

Etc.

The M Block has the details on two offered underclassman prospects, 2015 four-star CB Jordan Whitehead and 2016 DT Dexter Lawrence.

2015 four-star IN LB Darrin Kirkland Jr. visited for the Nebraska game and told Steve Lorenz($) that it was a "great experience," which... man, the food must've been great. Kirkland said he spoke to Greg Mattison, his primary recruiter, and plans to come back for the Ohio State game. While Michigan hasn't extended an offer yet, one could be coming in the relatively near future.

Recruitin':

I'm not even mad. That's amazing.

*If a quarterback named Grant Sherman isn't nicknamed "General" then I give up.

Kinda weird how little Hand talk there's been on the board considering he's announcing Thursday. If we weren't all panicking, figuring out who to fire and booing at the Big House, I'd still feel great about our chances.

OTOH Malik McDowell seems to be entering Treadwell/Diamond/Westphal/Booker territory

Because we know Hand is going to Alabama.  Let's face it in this current era if Saban really wants a kid it's all over.

McDowell is going somewhere else and while that's disappointing he has every right to explore his options.  Michigan isn;t for everyone and he gave the school a serious look, all you can ask for really.

is that none if them really considered Bama. Poggi did but Bama wanted him as an H-back/hybrid. He wanted to be a DL. If not for that, I openly thought we'd lose him. Said that if they just told him he'd be a DL, he'd likely flip. Rumors and word from many backed that thinking up after NSD. Even ESPNU said so but I take that for what it's worth more than confirmation. Anyway, Hand clearly likes them and they surely have him on our near the top of their board. For us, I think our only hope is that he suddenly likes Sports Management more than Engineering (hear he prefers the latter) and wants to be a pure DE rather than a hybrid 3-4 DE/OLB.

my issue with this response is if he is really considering engineering over sports management at this time then why not give your presumed favorite coach another look and re-visit virginia tech he dropped them earlier this year because he said they didnt offer his major, now the kid seems to be true to his word and if thats true then bama should not be in the picture at all and it should come down to us and florida, but thats just my take i havent heard him contadict this as of yet so i believe he will be blue on thursday

why I repeat that it always tends to come down to football/immediate success, etc with kids of his caliber. Again, Bama is roughly the 80th best engineering program in the country. If it was about academics, VT would ask be in the picture and it would be so clear cut as his choice being determined by major and quality of major. He'll go to Bama because in 3 years he'll be in the NFL.

but not for reasons of current losses, etc in the case of Hand. When VT was out I genuinely thought, despite other schools along with Bama still on his list, we were in the driver's seat. Yet, once narrowed down to the three, I absolutely get what he is saying and pretty much thought he was all Bama. Why? Well, there is a difference between a Bama offer (especially at a position you don't want to play) and being at the top of their wish list. Morris may have had an offer but he surely wasn't choice 1, 2 or 3. Poggi was wanted as an H-back and there were still rumors of indecision. Hand? He is no doubt at or near the top of their DE/overall player list. When they REALLY want someone, they tend to get them. Not always but he left there glowing about their 80th ranked engineering department, lol. That's not even the whole NFL football factory thing. The general rule is that a recruit that swears on academics will generally lower said academic standard for assumed better football coaching/future promise/immediate winning. I'd LOVE to be wrong but even though it's assumed to be us if he wants to major in SM, our engineering program has to be much better than bama's but it won't be about that. I dint think our recent losses and general fan predictions of Armageddon hurt as much with Hand (can't help) as our opposition being, well, bama. Plus, East coast DEs seem to be Southern locks lately. Thought we'd be 3rd for a while but think UF is out completely. He'll pause the UM staff but, sadly and hopefully I'm wrong, go to Bama. Felt this way the day his top 3 were announced. As for MM, I think the media and fan reaction to the season has definitely hurt us. I figured him a quiet kid who'd eventually be a Wolverine. Lately, without much talking the vibe I get I'd that he went from UM lock to going.....? I'd guess either osu or msu today (osu near NSD if a betting man) but I think all the negative local talk and rumors of transfers and, while offensive issues mainly, the losses have hurt us with him. Juju was never coming here but the first kid to say losing made them drop us always sends a shockwave in this new social media driven recruiting world. Some kids don't care our feel it. Others do. I think MM does, be it other recruits or the local chatter/meltdowns. The way it's looking, The Game is primed to be more of a recruiting show for osu than UM, even for those visiting UM or watching from home. So, you feel like Hand is a guy who could potentially see us lose out and, if he chooses us, want to help right our ship or go to Bama and probably not even attend their average engineering program? Do you think MM could see us potentially lose out, potentially get blown out by a school he said he likes that may be playing for a NC and want to come right the ship? HOPE I'M VERY WRONG but I don't. Bama tends to get who they really want and MM does feel like a kid innocently taking his time but slowly losing interest as well. We'll know how the staff feels and what they know Thursday. We get Hand or not, if offers fly out to 2nd-3rd tier DL or guys we publicly past on a while back there is concern. Basically, the staff reaction to Hand will say all we need to know whether we get him or not. Also, as I said, if we do get him, can we hold him until NSD. Saban won't just move on even if told so. Guy is the devil lol.

I fear MM to MSU but just on the horror alone...but there has been nothing to indicate that he likes them or is leaning toward them. Sure MSU beat us recently, but the ball will be in our favor by the time he plays in two or three years. Id beleive Winovich before I beleive a baseless prediction. Pardon me as Im not being punkish, but otherwise show me any reason for MSU lean

I agree in that once I read Hand would go to Bama for Engineering over Mich, it's been awhile since I went to U of M but we must still have an Engineering program that I would imagine, without looking it up, is better than Bama's.  When Hand is making a statement like that I'm thinking Bama is going to get him because he really wants to go there and now is just justifying his decision.

Danwillhor

that comment/notion pretty much solidified it for me. Michigan is better than Bama in every academic thing he claims to desire. Where he goes is his choice and life so best to him but if that is his thinking, academics went out the window as soon as Saban hit that magical door shutting button lol. No way they have a better engineering dept and, as another poster said, if that into it why is VT gone? Love to be wrong but it really smells of Bama to me.

I should probably start paying closer attention to how these 2014 commits perform. If the last three years give any indication, many of them will likely be starting for us next fall...

I'm not so worried about our receivers next year. It sounds like all of our 2014 WR commits are stars and one of them should be able to play next fall (if they need to). I think Canteen is the best shot, but not the only one.

Is the father of Maty Mauk.

If you drew up the picture of the perfect mid-Ohio small town that grew football players like soybeans, it could be Kenton.  Places like Kenton are the heart and soul of Ohio football.

He talked about it on an ESPNU interview.  When he met with Saban they said he could be the something-something, stand up DE.  They're obviously a real player.

Hopefully the relationships the coaches have built and the overall culture at M are what pull him our way.  That and a chance to build and be part of an elite defense in a few years (as opposed to immediately)

I think the SAM has more coverage responsibilities in Alabama's scheme. IIRC, he was told that he would be the JACK linebacker, which is basically a DE pass rush specialist.

The Jack position at Alabama is played by a true hybrid. Alabama tends to recruit 4-3 defensive ends which have spent most of their career rushing the quarterback from the edge in a down position. Those players are often explosive athletes that can get up the field on the edge, but may not be capable of taking on top tackles in the running game every play. Nick Saban and Kirby Smart use those strengths to create matchup problems and confusion with big, lengthy athletes that can rush the quarterback, use their reach to cover large spaces when backing up in a zone blitz, and move around enough wider to defeat the blocks of fullbacks and tight ends on the end. The Jack also slides down to play defensive end when Alabama uses a 4-man front, as they did almost every play against Georgia's shotgun look in the SEC championship game.

Obviously not everybody is going to choose Alabama since they can only sign so many, but it would be interesting to know how many consensus 5-stars they've really gone after who have chosen other schools, and what those schools were. Were they top-flight programs near the Mason-Dixon line or below it, or struggling programs up north?

I predicted a victory over Penn State. Fat lot of good my optimism did me there.

I was actually reasonably optimistic (for me) about Hand early in the season, but the gradual descent into darkness here in combination with the fact that Hand has wanted to go into engineering for quite a while leads me to think Alabama is in the lead now.

From a pure football standpoint, I would think Alabama would have an advantage at the moment. I realize that factor can be trumped by how well Hand likes the respective coaching staffs, but it can't help us right now that Hoke & Co. are now receiving such open criticism.

According to Sam Webb, Hand chose his current high school because it has an orientation towards engineering in its academics. If Hand is truly serious about becoming an engineer, then Alabama would seem to have a big advantage since it's clear they will construct an engineering program for him. Attending UM's engineering program is apparently not an option for him, which is where the sports marketing stuff comes in, led by Professer Needs-a-Raise. If he's truly just as interested in sports marketing as engineering, then our chances are much better.

I was skeptical about Poggi, and if that means we land Hand, I'm happy to be 100% wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

You probably said the same thing about Peppers, or Campbell, or any number of other big time recruits that didn't commit as sophomores. Now Hand might be more of a 50-50 proposition, but in the recruiting game if you predict that we're not going to get every guy we've offered you're going to be right more times than not because there are far more offers than spots to fill, but it doesn't really say anything other than that you can be constantly negative.
