After a finish like that, what do you tell your guys in the locker room?

“They played their guts out. Played winning football. Overcame so much, and we messed up a play at the end. Have resolve, put steel in the spine, and we’ll move forward.”

Given the fact that your team played so well until the end, is this something that you can use as…I don’t want to say motivation, because that’s the wrong word, but something you can use as a good building point?

“Yeah. There’s so many- so much good, you know. Our guys played big in a big game…overcame so much- calls that were made, calls that weren’t made. Just kept fighting and overcame so much in the ball game and ultimately played winning football. What do you say about the last play? It was unfortunate. Didn’t get the result.”

Why was this the game for Jabrill to see the field offensively and how do you think he did in terms of impacting in all three facets today.

“He did good. He did great in all phases. Big time player, plays really big in the game as he does so often. He played great.”

As you said, you guys played winning football minus one last play that could have gone any way. You guys were in control most of the game- led or tied. How do you talk to your players about the fact that it’s a process, it’s more than one game, it’s even more than one season [as] it’s about building a program?

“Have resolve. Have steel in our spine. Gotta move forward.”

What happened on that last play?

“The snap was low, just below the knees. He didn’t field it cleanly, and looked like then he bobbled it again and kind of kicked it a little bit. Looked like he was trying to kick it while he was in traffic. I mean, you saw it. That about the way you saw it? Very unfortunate.”

[After THE JUMP: “We’re gonna put steel in our spine.”]

Did you get an explanation on the Bolden ejection?

“Uh, no. Tried to explain to them that Bolden was pushed in the back. That really should have been a push in the back penalty. His explanation was that the review people saw it the same way, so….hard to fathom.

“And the quarterback wasn’t even down on the ground. He was straight up and tried to drop like a sack of potatoes. That’s just one. That’s one of many.”

What was the reaction of the team immediately after the game? Stunned?

“Steel. We’re gonna put steel in our spine.”

Just the resolve of the defense to be able to get off the field at the end there.

“Yeah, I mean, it was, uh…multiple times. Even the time where we stopped them on fourth down and they called a personal foul penalty, which I tell our guys, their back is not stopping. He is, on two or three occasions, got push from the offensive line [and] picked up five, seven more yards. We had to stop the back. Didn’t agree with that one.

“Then I thought for sure I saw a facemask on Jake Rudock when the ball got deflected back to him, but it was…yeah. They just kept fighting. They just kept fighting and fighting through things, which you’re so proud of as a coach.

“Our guys fought their hearts out, and we’ll come back and we’ll build and we’ll steel ourselves against it. So, there’s a lot of fight in our guys so really proud of that. Played winning football and overcame a lot.”

You haven’t matched up a cornerback on a specific wide receiver very much at all this year, but it seemed like that was the plan with Jourdan on Aaron Burbridge. What did you see out of that matchup today?

“It was a battle. They won some, we won some. But two great players going at it, that’s what I saw.”

How would you rate your team defense after coming off the three straight shutouts? Going up against Michigan State, little bit of a different atmosphere, different turnout. Overall, how would you rate your defense?

“It was…they played good enough to win. Played winning football and fought hard and so many times when they had to- I mean, seven straight downs on the one exchange, got them stopped. Did so many good things. And both teams played extremely hard in the game. It was close, hard fought like you’d expect. I was really proud of the way our team played.”

You mentioned how hard your team fought but didn’t get the result. Irregardless of the loss, with the way you played the first 59 minutes how much tougher is it to be 5-2 versus 6-1?

“It’s a difference of a game. Yeah, I mean, what else is there to say. Played good, fought hard, and didn’t get the result today.”

You said one of many earlier. I’m assuming you weren’t happy with the officiating in total, or was it just a handful of things?

“Yeah, you could say that.”

Did Blake [O’Neill] tell you how that play evolved, how it broke down, and what his confusion was at the time?

“Yeah, I talked to him. He said after he bobbled it a little he still thought he could get the ball kicked. It was a mistake. A mistake was made. Mistakes were made. Mistakes were made not fielding it cleanly, and then once he bobbled it a few times he should have just fell on it so…mistakes were made. Very unfortunate circumstances.”

Just talk about Kenny Allen performing under pressure.

“Yeah, so good. Just stood up there and put the ball through the uprights on a windy, blustery day. It was impressive. The last one there to give us a two-score lead…just an outstanding game by Kenny Allen.”

During the last play, did you have any other options besides punting and did you talk to your center and your punter about, hey, if there is a botched play fall on it? What was said in the conversation, and again, did you have another option?

“Yeah, the options were to go for it- I mean, if you go for it you leave them a hail mary opportunity. Could protect up and throw a long pass; probably still though, it’s going to eat up seven seconds so they would have the hail mary opportunity. So, ran through those scenarios and felt like the best decision was to punt it and told them to catch it and punt it. They didn’t have anybody back. When they lined up to the punt they didn’t have any returners. Just a matter of catching it and punting it, and we messed it up.”

When Michigan State got some momentum your defense made some stops and Willie Henry picked up some sacks. Talk about what they showed there.

“Just every guy that was out there competing, fighting hard, playing good, sound defense. Competing like the dickens. It was exciting to watch.”

Have you ever been in a finish like this in a game?

“Not one exactly like this, no.”

How does it affect you? You talked about the players will rebound. How do you address the team right after a game like this?

“I talked about that earlier, how we addressed the team.”

How does it affect you when you’re this close to beating Michigan State?

“Yeah, well, just as you said, everybody played really well. Played winning football. Competed like maniacs. You know, both teams did. It was a heck of a football game. Played winning football and didn’t get the result. I mean, welcome to football. Now move forward.”

Love to read how he talks to his players, etc. Handles press conferences and his team equally well.  Good things ahead!

I'm enjoying Harbaugh's comments about the refs.  Hoke would have just commented about the officiating crew's failure to execute and that they took the refs into the locker room and 'fed them some things that were good for them to eat'.

not a depressant. It should make you mad that you didn't finish. That you let the other team off the hook. If Michigan is really a team driven by competition this game should be excellent motivation for the rest of the season and  for next year's MSU game.

This game should not be forgotten. Rather, it should reside in the corner of your brain motivating you whenever you struggling to complete that last rep on the bench press or executing that last play in practice.

As much as the end of that game sucked Michigan has a great opportunity to forge greatness. The best often fail and that failure is part of why they are great.

"This game should not be forgotten?"

I agree wholeheartedly.  And I am quite sure that by the time next year rolls around, every Michigan player is going to be so sick of seeing the replay of the "Michigan State Miracle" over and over that any of them would sacrifice limbs and organs to win next year and many thereafter.

Huge number of things that could have happened in different ways that would not have led to the game ending that way. 0.001% chance of that result, but there it is. *sigh*

But that's part of what makes college football so glorious. While it hurts, I also can't help laughing at the absurdity of it all.

Go Blue. Let's beat the Gophers.

At all?

The real, just about foolproof way to win the game there is to go max protect on the punt and have every player just tackle/hold/facemask/whatever their opponent. We punt the ball away as time runs off. They take the penalties and we kneel the ball to win or they decline the penalties and we punted the ball away (time has probably expired) and we win.

That, of course, is not really in the spirit of the game. But it would work.

Knowing we still have Coach Harbaugh takes a little of the sting out of last night. He will have the team ready to go. Tough tough loss but there's a lot of football left to play this season and the future is bright. Go Blue!

Steel.

That loss was brutal. When Harbaugh was hired how many people thought they would be where they are now? I know I didn't. I knew there would be improvement but not to this level this quickly. No offense to Rudock, he is just a game manager, and Michigan had the game won until a freak last play with a seat holder at QB.  If Michigan is able to stretch the field with a QB able to connect on deep throws or even the threat of connecting on deep throws, it opens up so much more on offense.

Just stay off the news comment boards, ignore co-workers talk, this team is going nowhere but up.

Not that they are here but to the assholes sending death threats to O'Neill, I can't imagine how much your life has to suck for you to feel the need to do that.  I feel bad for your relatives, friends (as if you have any), your pets, and your co-workers.  You must be an absolute joy to be around. Scumbags.

I thought we'd be exactly where we are. Expected losses to Utah and MSU (OSU and maybe Minny or PSU). And I'm not alone. The great majority believed Harbaugh would provide instant direction and M would stop losing to inferior opponents. Not trying to pick on you, but I keep reading that same refrain from National writers: "Nobody thought it would happen this quick!" When in fact everybody I know predicted these exact results through 7 games.

They are right where I thought they would be also. I thought they would end up with 8 wins. If they beat MSU or OSU that would be a great accomplishment but not expected. I know there are guys out there that saw an immediate turn around and that is fine but that is more thinking with their heart than their head.

Please.  We were within 1 score of a top 5 Utah team.  We played well enough to beat an undefeated MSU.  And we have demolished everyone in between.  You can say you thought we would be 5-2 by now but no one expected the team that went 5-7 last year to look this good this early this year.  We should be 6-1.  Harbaugh has undoubtedly coached this team up much faster than you expected.

We are ranked 15 and we deserve that ranking.  This is way ahead of schedule.

...not so much in terms of our 5-2 record, but just in terms of the overall quality of the team in all phases.

The D is really strong.

Despite the punt total screw up the special teams are night and day better than 12 months ago.

The offense remains a limiting factor, but even there it is already evident that once Harbaugh gets the right QB, this offense is going to be really great.  No knock on Rudock.  He is solid, not elite.  More importantly, he is not the exact right fit for the offense.  The perfect QB Harbaugh needs for his system can be more of an accurate deep threat, plus just a little more of a run threat if receivers are covered.

Anyway, M is way ahead of schedule, and this suggests great things for 2016 and beyond, Harbaugh has done a really great job with a roster that had talent but had underpeformed, and is still a couple of key pieces short.

In other words, we are way ahead of reasonable expectations because the 5-2 record (which only meets expectations) shows an overall very strong performance and is not some sort of luck+smoke and mirrors+weak opponents phenomenon (as is MSU's current record).

Still, there are no moral victories or silver linings.  M lost to a hated rival in the worst way imaginable.  We are not there yet, but we are on the way.

Football is a dumb game and I am dumb for caring about it.

Good to see leadership from Harbaugh after that. Hopefully we have a strong rest of the season and can look back at this as a very stupid bump in the road, not an inflection point.

I'm going to go back to staring blankly now.

Brian,

Can the saying under the MGOBLOG banner be changed to

"Have resolve. Have steel in our spine"     ?

After taking some time to watch the replays of that last play, I would like to see Coach Harbaugh elaborate a bit and shoulder some responsibility for what happened.

Sure Blake bobble the snap and then made a poor decision by not just falling on the ball.

However, as others here have pointed out, we didn't have the right punt formation in to counter what State was doing. We had two gunners and they were only covering one, which meant they had 10 players focused on blocking the punt. That meant we only had 5 initial blockers on the line to counter that 10. The long snapper basically can't even be counted on to throw an effective block as he has to focus and sustain his snap. (Of course, there is the fact that they trucked him immediately, which should have been a 15 yard penalty according to NCAA rules regarding long snappers, but we all know how poorly the officiating was)

IMO, the coaching staff should have either saved a timeout to observe what they were going to do regarding the punt and then adjust our plan accordingly, or take a delay of game penalty to ensure you have the right personal and formation to counter the fact they were going all out for the block.

In addition, a few of our linemen didn't sustain their blocks. It was a cursory block and then run down the field to down the punt. Don't know why we needed 4 or 5 guys downfield to down a punt in which they had no return man......

... I agree. And you didn't add that we ought to have had Jabrill behind the punter similar to the victory formation. Botched punts have been known to happen. This was as much a coaching failure as a player failure. All that said however, there is not a coach or coaching staff anywhere I would prefer to what we have right now. We played our asses off. State is really good and we did NOT back down. Unlike the last few season against Sparty. As Harbaugh said "Welcome to football. Now move forward."

You need to have so many folks on the line of scrimmage.

But the larger point is we needed to adjust to the fact they *clearly* were going for the punt block. We should have everyone (except for perhaps one person who goes down to cover the ball when it bounces, and prevent MSU from getting it) focused on blocking, and only blocking -- not going down to cover the kick. MSU didn't have anyone back, so there was no one to tackle.

Additionally, Jabril/whomever could lined up on the line, but backed up & kept his eye soley on the snap -- essentially playing the role of the victory formation 'safety'.

Getting the kick off, and if that doesn't happen, covering the snap/drop, was job #1. We were only focused on the first part of that, which is bad coaching.
