  • Analysis: Michigan was mostly in control for the first two and a half periods. After they stretched the lead to four, they took their foot off of the gas and built a defensive shell. Still, two of their three even-strength goals deflected in off of defenders. Puck luck happens and tonight the Wolverines were the recipients of it. It was not an overwhelming performance, but it was enough to get the job done. Jacob Hayhurst looks fun. He set up a number of plays, and beat a couple of defenders in 1v1 situations. Back to the top line, maybe? We’ll see. Tomorrow will be a challenge to see if Michigan can replicate goals if the bounces go in the opposite direction.

  • Analysis: After at least one solid performance last week, the defense took a step back tonight. Granted, York and Luce were unavailable, but this was not a template for the future. Spoiler Alert: there were five OMRs. Also, the defense had issues getting the puck out of the zone. DZTOs were very concerning. There were at least three bad ones in the first period alone. Lake State did not look to have the necessary talent to capitalize off of the mounting Wolverines errors. The Lakers had numerous chances, pressing Michigan and getting looks at net. Mann was the difference. Switzer looked good going forward to his credit. In their own zone, though, the Wolverines had a bit of a rough go.

  • Analysis: Michigan had three man advantages tonight. A fortunate bounce off of a failed clear lead to Moyle finding the puck alone in the slot, and he capitalized. On the second power play, Michigan somehow surrendered back-to-back breakaways! The third chance was probably the best looking. They moved the puck well and held the zone for over a minute before Blankenburg took a penalty after a Laker got loose and drove the Michigan slot. A goal, sure, but repeatable? Maybe not so much.  On the kill, Michigan did a nice job of limiting chances and keeping the Lakers on the perimeter. In the end, Michigan only allowed five attempts on net. Not bad. That’s something on which to build.

  • Analysis: Strauss Mann is legit. The defense was sloppy and all over the place, yet he stood tall between the pipes. He left maybe just one juicy rebound all night? Mostly, he controlled the puck, tracked it well, and looks very mobile and athletic making trying saves in addition to expected ones. As higher end offensive talent rolls onto the schedule, it’ll be interesting to see how he adjusts. So far, though, levels = completed.

  • Analysis: So, uh, Michigan gives up three breakaways and a couple more 2v1s yet no goals. Ha. Some of that looks to be the Lakers not having a whole lot of individual talent, but the rest of that is Mann. He looks very, very good. However, if Michigan keeps hanging him out to dry, he will not be a brick wall forever. Yes, a couple of preferred Wolverine defenders are out tonight. Still…this is a bit alarming. On the positive (kinda) side, Michigan did create a couple of breakaways and two more 2v1s. They also did not score. Maybe no one can score on OMRs this year? Is that a thing? Probably not.
