Analysis: Unlike Friday night, Michigan came out on fire, scoring in the first few minutes thanks to a couple of breakaways by Johnny Beecher. Spoiler alert: they tallied a couple more OMRs in the first period. The Wolverines had chances aplenty and could have knocked the Bucks out early. Michigan is just a much more talented and better skating hockey team. It looked like that on Friday, and it was confirmed on Saturday. Once they extended the lead in the second period, it was over. Garrett Van Whye flipped home a 4th goal after Power got the puck to the front and Lapointe knocked it down. Captain Jack added a fifth goal on another deflection. Michigan needed a sweep, and their offense stepped up all weekend, creating great chances and finishing quite a few.

Analysis: The Wolverine defense looked great all weekend, not surrendering an even strength goal. In addition to keeping pucks out of the net, they also didn’t really allow many good chances for the second game in a row. Ohio State didn’t appear to be able to outpace the Maize and Blue or attack them in 1v1 scenarios. Despite not facing one of the most potent offenses in the league, this is still progress! In their last 240 hockey minutes, they played about 237 minutes of pretty solid defense. Yay!

Analysis: Michigan scored on their first two man advantages with great puck and player movement. Owen Power blasted his second power play goal (and second goal overall) of the season with a snipe from straightaway. Cam York matched that chance in the second period. Mike Pasta redirected his effort in front. Before that, though, Blankenburg, Lapointe, and Kent Johnson worked a great triangle and reverse to get Nick open from straightaway. It was great puck movement to displace the point man on the Kill. That’s the kind of thing Michigan can and should do more.

Michigan’s penalty kill was much, much better, tonight. Ohio State barely threatened all evening. Van Whye had several nice deflections on attempted cross-ice passes. While Michigan did give up some zone time, they did not leave attackers unmarked or free to charge the net. They also let very few pucks through to Mann. This has been a rough go for the Wolverines all season. Hopefully, this new trend continues.

Analysis: Strauss Mann resumed his place in Michigan’s crease on Saturday. While making double digit saves in the first half of the game, none of them were of the difficult variety. In fact, Mann didn’t have to make a Grade A save until a minute left in the second period when he stoned an unchecked attacker at the corner of the crease. In the third period, with the game in hand, Michigan took their foot off of the gas a little bit, and Ohio State piled up more shots for Strauss to save. He did. Ho hum. Strauss did tally his third shutout of the season. He had six all of last year.

Analysis: LOL. Beecher got two breakaways in the first three minutes! He finished the second one. York and Lapointe worked a 3v2, but the diagonal was deflected. It developed nicely, though. Van Whye’s shot went wide on his 2v1. Four OMRs in the first period is telling of the speed/skating differential between both teams. Michigan tallied a fifth OMR in the second period with a 4v3…but it took way too long to develop.

Ohio State finally got their first chance in transition, breaking in on a 2v1, but the pass across was broken up. Michigan got a little sloppy in the third period, surrendering three more OMRs, including a couple 2v1s and a breakaway. That was a little disconcerting, but given the game context, it’s a little more excusable.
