The Sponsors

This show is presented by UGP & The Bo Store, and if it wasn’t for Rishi and Ryan nobody would get our jokes. Our other sponsors are also key to all of this: HomeSure Lending, Ann Arbor Elder Law, the Residence Inn Ann Arbor Downtown, the University of Michigan Alumni Association, Michigan Law Grad,Human Element, Lantana Hummus, the Phil Klein Insurance Group, and a possible farewell to Peak Wealth Management, who is going to win our bracket thanks to State winning tonight so I'm not talking to him right now (but you still should).

--------------------------------------------

1. Speed In Space

starts at 1:00

Too much open practice? We've got families, Jim. The offensive line feels…good? We would take either right tackle—Jalen Mayfield killed a guy. This might be on our DL as well. Sainristil! Also might be on the D. But Black! That's almost certainly on the D. But Gattis and tempo and guys in space…this is real people.

2. Don Brown's Guys

starts at 35:56

Josh Metellus should move to free safety to make way for a hundred Daxton Hills. Backup cornerback is now on the list of concerns. Kemp can't hold up to Cesar Ruiz; maybe that's a Ruiz thing? Sad seeing McGrone on the next year team—had high hopes this year. Stock up: Aidan Hutchinson. Jeter looks fine. Hill and Ambry can't come off the field, unless they find more Dax Hills.

3. Iggy and Poole to the NBA

starts at 1:05:10

Well that sucks. What kind of NBA takes these guys and not Cassius Winston? What does Michigan do now? Can Mo Wagner pay his brother? Can he pay Lester Quinones?

4. Gimmicky Top Five Signs We'd Fly

Starts at 1:27:24

We went for douchey—like in our Twitter mentions for ideas for this douchey.

I tried to start a conversation about this but we moved on before I could. Spread teams like to rotate through a lot of receivers and send at least two eligible receivers downfield every play. I don't care who you are; if you sprint 60 yards six times in six minutes you will get tired. This is one of the reasons Ohio State is so dangerous late in games. They have a deep bench of wide receivers with 4.5 or 4.4 speed. Until recently did they did a terrible job of coaching them but it doesn't take any coaching to run in a straight line three times, and that guy still needs a cornerback glued to him. I've said for a long time if you want to beat Ohio State without Ohio State-caliber talent you need to either penetrate up the middle with consistency, or play zone.

Well they run 3 CB sets and so far there are... 1 1/2 CBs? Thomas is a great athlete that we have seen almost nothing of at CB. Have seen even less from Gray.

Even if Hill comes in and is a day 1 starter, that gives them 2 or 3 safeties (Hawkins) so it's not like they can avoid the need for 3 CBs by using another safety unless they're comfortable with Woods or JKP taking on that role.

So unlike years past, if 1 CB needs a break or gets dinged, they have no proven depth to fall back on like Clark/Watson.

Need to recruit better on the defensive side of the ball. Talent is way down compared to years past. The middle of the defense in particular is a huge concern. Either development has to get better or UM needs to sign higher rated players.

Starters

Anchor - 4 start Hutchinson

NT - 4 Star Kemp (new position)

3T - 3/4 Star Dwumfor/Jeter

WDE - 3 Star Paye

MLB - 4 Star Ross

WLB - 3 Star Gil

Viper - 3 Star Hudson (plays better than that)

CB - 4 Star Hill

SS - 3 Star Metellus (I have my issues with him but he's All-Conference)

FS - 3 Star Hawkins

CB - 4 Star Thomas

Could argue 2 of those spots are concerning (Kemp, Hawkins, and maybe Gil). Come Game 1, there will be 3, maybe 4 3 Stars (once Hill gets to town) but 2 of them (Hudson and Metellus) are All-Conference guys.

Back ups

Anchor - 4 Star Ojabo (as of today)

NT - 4 Star Smith

3T - 5 Star Hinton

WDE - 4 Star Vilain (and 3 Star Uche)

MLB - 4 Star Anthony

WLB - 4 Star McGrone

Viper - Walk on Glasgow (incoming 4 Stars Solomon and Johnson/3 Star Barrett)

CB - 3 Star Gray

SS - 5 Star Hill

FS - 3 Star Woods (plus the projects like Faustin and Green)

CB - 3/4 Star guys (Perry, Sims, Green)

Concerns there would be Anchor and CB.

Guys who haven't panned out

4 Star JKP

4 Star St. Juste (injuries)

4 Star Johnson

5 Star Solomon (different reason but we'll see what he does at Tennessee)

4 Star DIB

4 Star Hudson

The 3 star projects are mostly from 2018 and are RS Freshmen. So they very well might not work out/are causing depth issues, but they're not yet considered failed projects. The 2017 DL class that has fallen apart is the biggest issue with Solomon transferring along with the CB depth concerns that are partially exacerbated by St Juste's medical retirement.

Meanwhile, 3 Stars that have panned out

Uche - Pass rushing specifically

Hudson

Metellus

Paye

3 Stars who have more or less been... fine

Gil

Dwumfor

Hawkins (still to be decided)

Woods (still to be decided)

It would be great to have a 2 deep full of 4 and 5 Stars. The 2016, 2017, and 2019 classes have/had those types of guys. Problem is 2016 had early departures for the draft (Gary, Bush, Long), 2017 lost some guys to medical retirement (CMH)/transfers (Solomon, DIB, Hudson), and 2019 are freshmen. But to say "the projects haven't panned out" is premature when it has mostly been 4 stars who haven't panned out.

Yes it would be great to have a two deep of 4 and 5 stars because that's what it takes to win the B1G championship and CFP games. When you say some 3 stars have been "fine" what does that even mean? I watched OSU ruthlessly pick on Gil and Metellus. I watched Rutgers and SMU torch Brad Hawkins in the sparingly little bit he played last year. I saw Dwumfour play abysmally against the run vs pretty much everyone. I guess "fine" means going 8-5 or 10-3 and getting exposed vs the better teams on the schedule? The bottom line is that the talent on defense this year is noticeably worse than it was from 2016-2018. The 2017 DL class was a huge bust and now we are paying for it. There are very few players playing above their recruiting ranking right now across the roster as a whole, and that's either a development issue, an evaluation issue, or a recruiting issue. Arguing semantics of which 3 star is slightly better than his recruiting ranking is pointless when he's not good enough to beat the best teams in the nation. It's year 5, we should have more depth and talent on the roster right now, but the amount of attrition in the 2016 and 2017 classes coupled with the extremely poor 2018 class has led to a team that can't even field 22 starters without massive talent questions at key positions.

Somebody give this guy Jim Harbaugh's contact info so he'll leave us alone! Or, maybe this is just the ultimate troll job? Nobody could possibly be this insane. Criticizing the team, coaches, etc. is fine, but man is this diving headfirst into some unhealthy territory. The healthiest thing for you would be to take several significant steps away from the recruiting rankings. Read the roster, memorize names, maybe even attend an open practice and try to shake a player or two's hand. Then, when the season arrives, hope like hell that these guys can win some big ball games. If they don't, wish that they had, and hope that they're able to handle a loss well enough to prepare for whatever comes next. Michigan will recruit who Michigan will recruit. There's nothing you can do about any of it, and that's okay. All better? Another option.... just root for whoever's had the best recruiting rankings for the last few years. Those are the only teams doing things the correct way anyhow, right?

Yes it would be great to have a two deep of 4 and 5 stars because that's what it takes to win the B1G championship and CFP games.

MSU and PSU won the Big Ten without those types of guys. OSU has made the playoffs and been housed full of 4 and 5 stars. Clemson's roster composition has been within 1 or 2 spots of Michigan's every year for the last 5 with the exception of last season.

When you say some 3 stars have been "fine" what does that even mean?

That means Gil and Dwumfor aren't Hurst or Bush. Few players are. They're also not some guy at Illinois getting ejected 15 yards downfield every single play. They would play/start on almost every Big Ten team with the exception of OSU and maybe a rotating group of MSU/PSU/Iowa on a given year.

I watched OSU ruthlessly pick on Gil and Metellus.

They picked on Watson and got Kinnel/Bush (both 4 stars) as many times as they got Gil/Metellus. Bush grabbed air on crossing routes, Gary/Winovich did nothing all game, and the entire defense was shredded not because of the 2 3 stars, because the entire defense and coaching staff was unprepared to take OSU's best punch.

I watched Rutgers and SMU torch Brad Hawkins in the sparingly little bit he played last year.

Yup, he had a bad fill on the Rutgers TD and made a coverage error in the SMU game. Hill also got turned around 2 or 3 times by that slot WR they had and Kinnel had multiple penalties as well.

he 2017 DL class was a huge bust and now we are paying for it.

Yeah, and weird how they were all 4 stars and a 5 star.

Arguing semantics of which 3 star is slightly better than his recruiting ranking is pointless when he's not good enough to beat the best teams in the nation.

It's pointless to cry about Gil when JKP has barely sniffed the field. It's pointless to whine about Faustin when DIB couldn't stay enrolled at CMU. They don't need to look at  Upshaw and say "nope, 3 star." If they think he can play, they can recruit him. More specifically, BROWN can recruit him.

Jordan Poole has upside Cassius Winston doesn't. 6 ft guards with limited athleticism don't work in the nba, it doesn't matter what he does in college and everybody knows it. Its a completely different level of athleticism and most of the league are shot makers. Poole is a tall guard who is athletic enough to potentially rise up over people and play passable defense. He hasn't shown consistency yet but his upside is much higher than winston which is what the nba cares about.

There is a lot of anger going on during this podcast. Someone needs to cheer up and not be so dismissive when other people deign to ask questions or bring up things the host doesn't like.
