MGoJob: Drupal 8 Migration Comment Count

It's time to update MGoBlog to the latest version of Drupal. I'm looking for a Drupal developer who is familiar with MGoBlog to create a version of the site in Drupal 8. This is a contract job; if you're interested there would also be an ongoing maintenance aspect as we tweak the site and add bells and whistles.

Requirements are somewhat flexible since Drupal 8 and its contrib constellation are still in flux, but an outline:

  • implement a modern responsive theme for the site that we already have mocked up
  • implement a Drupal 8 version of the XML RPC module that allows Windows Live Writer to work in 6
  • implement as much of the current site functionality as possible given the state of contrib (userpoints not working will be a major issue, for one), adding as contrib fills in
  • make sure performance is at least as good and hopefully better than the existing site
  • migrate content, taxonomy, diaries, and users, in some form. I am completely happy to leave previous content behind in static pages as long as the URLs remain the same and you can still get to them in some form from the tag pages.
Budget is "I don't know, I've never budgeted something like this." I am expecting something in the five digit range. You will know better than I what is feasible if you're a good candidate. Timeframe is 3-6 months, but is flexible since we are aiming at a moving target. Email me at [email protected] if you're interested.

Would be nice if they could fix the MGoBoard pagination.  One of the side panels incorrectly targets the main pagination, so the only way to view older thread pages is to right click -> open in new tab/window.  Such a simple fix, but it's been that way for years and drives me nuts.

I just wanted to share that redesigning MGoBlog was part of my (successful) product manager interview at Google.  There's some serious tech talent on this site.  I guess the interviewer got sick of talking about the common social media sites; when he saw I went to UM it lead to that...

Any thought on maybe switching to another PHP framework like Laravel or Symphony? I just wonder if the performance issues might be streamlined with a different framework.

Drupal is a content management system like Wordpress, not simply a framework. So it comes out of the box with a lot of things you'd have to patch together or build from scratch with a mere framework. In fact Drupal 8 is supposed to be built on top of Symfony. Past and current versions of Drupal have built whitehouse.gov, theonion.com, and elevenwarriors, so it's not exactly a joke in terms of what it can do.

I don't have any inside info, but I suspect the issue with the site outages are that they use a webhost out of Florida I've never heard of, not the programming.

3 - 6 months? Great. Well in place before next season. I hope it works. And it still would be nice to have an explanation page for all of us non-programmers put into simple words that we can understand. I get the gist of things, though, and that's good enough for me. Hope you find somebody good to do the work.

I know nothing about drupal, but can do this with Ruby / Rails, and also do the front end style / javascript stuff. And set you up with your own servers as well.

Pros: No PHP, faster site with less overhead (especially by making use of ajax), no scary behind-the-scenes obfuscation, better server and likely cheaper.

Cons: Never used Windows Live Writer and don't know if it can be integrated (there are a million other WYSIWYG editors, however). Moving everything away from drupal may be a huge pain in the ass, if not impossible.
