Hello: Tommy Doman Jr. Comment Count

Ace April 6th, 2020 at 12:13 PM

Michigan added one of the nation's top specialists during their run on commitments last week. They didn't have to look far, either. Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary's K/P Tommy Doman Jr. announced his commitment to the 2021 class on Thursday evening, hours after MA TE Louis Hansen's pledge. While it appears punting is his strongest point, Doman is ranked as one of the nation's top placekickers, too. He told TMI's Brice Marich that he's coming in to compete in every facet of the game that involves putting foot to ball:

"Coach Harbaugh has set the expectation for me to continue to focus on all three kicking responsibilities, kick field goals, punt, and kickoff,” Doman said. “That way I can help the team wherever needed as best as possible.”

Doman, who'll punt in the All-American Bowl, will be on a full scholarship. He's the sixth member of what is now a seven-man 2021 class after MA ILB Casey Phinney committed on Friday. Doman is the only specialist; you can expect that to remain the case.

GURU RATINGS

Sailer Kornblue Kohl's
5*, #1 P,
#5 K
4.5*, #2 P,
#8 K
5*, #4 P,
#3 K

We're working with different sites here because the usual suspects don't cover specialists. That task goes to the three national kicker/punter/snapper camps. Chris Sailer's camp is the highest on Doman, naming him the best punter in the country for his class and also putting him in the top five among kickers. All three sites have him within the top four among punters and top eight among kickers.

As special teams prospects go, he's the equivalent of a five-star, and he has the versatility to handle the entire kicking game. That's very much worthy of a scholarship spot.

SCOUTING

Our first extensive scouting report comes from Kohl's kicking camps, which has seen Doman come through multiple times:

Doman has attended multiple Kohl's events with the most recent being in January of 2020. He is a long athletic prospect. His punting consistency might be the best in the country. Doman has great hands and is more technically polished than anyone else in the 2020 [sic] class. He makes field goals look easy and won the kickoff competition at the Underclassman Challenge. Doman is currently the best overall combo K/P in the 2020 [sic again] class and is a D1 scholarship player.

The other is from Sailer Kicking, which has Doman as their top-ranked punter:

Tommy is a big time punting and kicking prospect. He is an incredible athlete with off the charts all around college potential. Tommy has an ideal frame for a D1 Punter. He has a pure swing and punts for a great combination of distance and hang time. He averages 45+ yards with 4.5+ hang time. Tommy reminds me a lot of former #1 Chris Sailer Kicking punter J.K. Scott (Alabama, Packers). He is also an excellent kicker. He is smooth and accurate off the ground. He gets the ball up well and easily has 55+ yard range. His kickoffs are D1 ready. Tommy drives the ball into the end zone with solid hang time. Tommy is currently the #1 Combo Prospect in the nation. He is a fine young man that is a pleasure to work with. The All-American Bowl on NBC Punter and TOP 12 Camp Invitee is the absolute real deal.

That's two-for-two on naming him the best combo kicking prospect. Not bad.

Kornblue's writeup is brief, though it also mentions that he's among the top combo prospects in the country and lists some of his in-game accomplishments:

Tommy is currently ranked as the #2 punter nationally in the Kornblue Kicking Fab 50 Rankings. He is without question one of the top combo specialists in the 2021 class.

2018 – All State 1st Team Kicker (3-4 division), 2018 – All North 2nd Team Punter (all divisions), 2018 – School record holder for longest field goal in a game – 50 yards, Dual varsity sports – football/crew

In my expert opinion, Doman is one of the top combo specialists in the class.

OFFERS

Doman also holds offers from Air Force, Army, Boston College, Colorado State, Dartmouth, Navy, Penn, Washington State, and Western Michigan. Hit the service academy trifecta.

HIGH SCHOOL

Orchard Lake St. Mary's is one of the power programs in Michigan's Catholic League. They've produced James Ross, Josh Ross, Morgan Trent, Jermaine Gonzales, DiAllo Johnson, and David Bowens for Michigan over the years, as well as four-star recruits Dionte Allen (FSU '07 signee), Robert Bolden (PSU '10), Dion Sims (MSU '09), and Taurian Washington (OSU '07), plus several notable three-stars including (sigh) former Penn State star receiver Allen Robinson.

STATS

According to his Hudl highlights, he averaged 40.3 yards per punt with five pinned inside the 20-yard line as a junior, though it doesn't say on how many attempts. He went 9-for-15 on field goals—it's important to remember here that the snapper and holder are also high-schoolers and probably not going D-I in those areas—with two makes from beyond 40 yards. Notably, he's not kicking off a tee. Finally, 60 of his 71 kickoffs went for touchbacks.

As a sophomore, he went 5-for-7 on field goals with a 50-yard make and hit 31 of 32 extra points. He averaged 37.7 yards on 22 punts, so that improved in his junior season.

FAKE 40 TIME

Doman doesn't have a 40 time anywhere. Props to him, however, for listing his track and weightlifting times on his Hudl page despite them very much screaming "kicker":

Height & Weight: 6'3" 175lbs
Bench: 125
100 Meter Dash: 12.8
400 Meter Dash: 71
Squat(LBS): 220
Deadlift(LBS): 185

I usually don't turn to football for body positivity but here we are.

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Doman should get a chance to punt and maybe also handle kickoffs straight away. Kicker Jake Moody will be a senior when Doman arrives and it'd probably be helpful to let Doman focus on one specialty before heaping all three kicking duties on his plate. After that, though, Doman could very well handle everything, and the coaches will get the chance to evaluate him as a placekicker before deciding whether to bring in some competition.

Kickers are notoriously weird. I won't further a guess as to how any of this goes. The odds are better than usual that Doman will pan out in at least one area.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

It's got a specialist. Phinney's Hello post will be on the way in a day or two.

I'm going to assume that parts of that are because:

1. Not everyone offers full scholarships right away to kickers
2. No one is taking a kicker in every class so the total number of kicker offers in general is not very high.
3. Most kickers arent game changers and coaches are just trying to find a competent one, so they find one in their area or find a walk-on or preferred walk-on close by and aren't going to go off and look in MI and will use that time and energy elsewhere.

Just going to throw out a guess that may be part of the reason but certainly not all, most programs don’t offer and take a kicker every single year, so some of the other big names may have gotten their guy in the previous 2 classes. Again that explains why he doesn’t have 50+ offers but doesn’t explain why he has so few.

I'm calling shennanigans that Ace actually wrote this. No way, there is a OLSM reference about recruits we missed on without mentioning one K.J. Hamler.

Yes, I understand he finished HS at IMG, but the man's nickname is Speedy Eaglet fergodsakes
