Hello: George Johnson III Comment Count

Ace

Yes, another one.

Three-star Stuart (FL) Martin County ATH George Johnson III chose Michigan over Florida State this evening, becoming the sixth prospect to commit to the program since last weekend began. Coming off his official visit last weekend, he wrote an article for the local paper to explain his choice:

My decision for college is based off the academics, future teammates, coaches and if I see myself living in the area for the next few years of my life.

I’ve visited several schools, and Michigan will be where I’ll be playing football for the next three to four years of my life.

I love the Big House and the fan base. The first time I walked through the tunnel and onto the field I got chills. I love the history and the size of it. I’d seen it on TV, but it's bigger in real life. I was there with a group of other recruits, but I was so in awe that I went off my by myself and started running routes into the end zone and dreaming about what it would feel like catching touchdowns in front the Maize and Blue fans.

I like the enthusiasm of the coaching staff. They’re always amped up, and I like that vibe.

I like the bond the teammates had and the overall feel on campus.

It feels like a place I can call home.

I’m all in.

Go Blue!

While Johnson mostly plays quarterback in high school, he'll be a slot weapon at Michigan—he's listed at 5'11", 180. He's the 16th commit in the 2019 class, which now ranks fifth nationally, and the first among receivers. He told 247's Steve Wiltfong he doesn't plan to take any more visits.

GURU RATINGS

Rivals ESPN 247 247 Comp
3*, 5.6 ATH NR ATH 3*, 85, #95 ATH,
#124 FL, #967 Ovr
4*, #85 ATH,
#139 FL, #947 Ovr

I'll spare you the rant. ESPN and Rivals both have Johnson unranked; ESPN has no scouting report, Rivals had him at a regional camp. 247 has also seen Johnson at a camp and has him in might-as-well-be-unranked territory. His rankings lag well behind his offers for now.

Part of that may be due to size and position. Again, this is a 5'11" future slot bug who's playing most of his snaps at quarterback. At Michigan, he could line up in the slot or the backfield and also factor in as a return man.

SCOUTING

There's not a whole lot out there. Rivals had Johnson at their Miami regional camp. He worked out at running back, and given the sampling of one-on-one clips, he's a hilarious mismatch in that setting against linebackers:

Johnson didn't get written up by any of the Rivals scouts in attendance, though one of the other RBs at the camp said he was the best back there:

“George Johnson III. He was good running routes and catching.” - Rivals100 ATH Mark-Antony Richards

He earned a quick mention from 247's Andrew Ivins in the notes section from the Orlando Pylon 7 on 7:

Martin County's George Johnson III played mostly quarterback as a junior, but looked like natural at wide receiver for Treasure Coast Elite on Sunday.

That is, for the moment, the extent of what's out there.

OFFERS

Here's where the split comes in. Johnson has picked up a lot of momentum after starting with a meh list. Florida State jumped in last week; Georgia and Georgia Tech also offered, as did Kentucky, N.C. State, Nebraska, Oregon, Syracuse, USF, Utah, and Virginia, among others.

HIGH SCHOOL

I think the Rivals database is broken but Martin County doesn't appear to be a major talent factory. They were coached last year by... Bill Cubit? Seriously? He lasted one season, stepping down after posting a 3-6 record.

STATS

Martin's MaxPreps page only contains sophomore stats, which are actually the ones we probably want, since he spent the majority of that year at receiver, catching 58 passes for 1,103 yards (20.2 YPC) and nine touchdowns.

FAKE 40 TIME

Johnson posted a combine-recorded time of 4.72 in the 40. He also had a 4.32 shuttle and 32.2-inch vertical. Those are underwhelming numbers for a player his size. He claims a more encouraging, though unverified and therefore two FAKE out of five worthy, 4.55 40 on his Hudl page.

VIDEO

Sophomore highlights, mostly at receiver:

Junior highlights, mostly at quarterback but not the first clip:

Single-game reels can be found on his Hudl page.

PREDICTION BASED ON FLIMSY EVIDENCE

Johnson is ticketed for the slot, which limits his upside a bit—he can start at only one spot, one that splits its time with tight end. (Then again, another diminutive Floridian high school quarterback worked out pretty well at receiver here: Jeremy Gallon.) That said, he's got a very fun skill set that could lend itself well to lining him up at multiple spots on the field, and he's got upside as a special teams threat too. He'll probably redshirt a year before working his way onto the depth chart at slot; he could make an earlier impact in the return game.

UPSHOT FOR THE REST OF THE CLASS

It keeps growing.

"I’ve visited several schools, and Michigan will be where I’ll be playing football for the next three to four years of my life."

I like his optimism. If a diminutive slot ninja makes it to the NFL after 3 years, you know he's had a hell of a college career...

You mean IF they get around to it. ESPN is known to rank and then forget about players, even highly ranked ones. I doubt they’re gonna take the time to look at the under the radar type players.

Rivals seems to only evaluate at their camps now.

So thats 2/3 of the ranking formula where you’re probably not going to get much in terms of evaluations

The bad news (from his tapes) is that he is running for his life...the good news is that they can't catch him...what a riot!

In the camp tape of RB vs LB...the LBs had no chance against him.

I trust the coaches judgement on this one :)

I don't get the "rant" against the scouting services? They have always sucked for anything outsitde of the top 50 or so recruits, now they are just admitting it by basically not even trying. The teams' coaches are much more accurate, and always have been.  We love to treat the star ratings as some kind of "empirical evidence" of a recruit's value, but in truth, the services are really a bunch of guesses. If the talent evaluators were any good they would be working for an actual program somewhere.

Granted it's all in open spaces and he's going up against LB's... His moves and acceleration seem to be excellent. Then he does a great job of cathing the ball with his hands rather than trying to use his body to trap the ball. He looks like he's got real potential.

Nice to see us grab a guy who can at least potentially play WR.  We've had some concerning attrition among pass catchers and have not done much of a job replacing them so far.  Only one WR in this year's class, and that one a serious longshot, and none until now in 2019.   We may be looking at a serious roster hole at this position in 3 years.

I used to play golf occasionally with George Johnson, a tackle on the 1947/8 national championship team.  George passed away a couple of years ago, but played golf well into his 90s.  I guess he was probably George Johnson I?

His 40 times are not impressive but it seems like he's always running away from people (and in FL, too).

I know it's a cherry-picked highlight film, but he's got some nice escapability skills in tight traffic. And while his 40 time isn't impressive, he keeps running away from people on the field.
