GRIII, McGary Announcing Decisions At 4:30 Comment Count

Michigan's called a 4:30 presser at which GRIII and McGary will announce whether they're returning for year two or entering the NBA draft. Three quick items:

  • M had pressers for Burke and Lewan; could easily return.
  • Joint presser means decisions are probably the same, and seems like a good sign to this super-biased mind.
  • There were leaks hours before the Burke and Hardaway pressers, likely from agents who didn't get Burke and Hardaway's business. If we get to 4:30 without someone saying they're in, I bet they're out.

Cross all available digits.

UPDATE NOT FIVE SECONDS AFTER I POST THIS: A man named Dan Hasty says they're back. He's apparently on 97.1 and WWJ, so not a random. But also no track record. FWIW.

I'm at work and won't have time to get home and change into my lucky M basketball shirt.  (Of course, I wore it the night of the NC game, so . . . )  But at least we've got Dan Hasty on our side -- I feel better already . . . .

If they were going it is not a "joint" story, the stories would really have very little to do with each other.

Also, if they were going, they knew it yesterday, there would not have been any logistical reason to not announce 24 hours ago with another player that was leaving.

I feel like a joint press conference to announce they are both leaving would be disrespectful, especially with Burke and Hardaway announcing their departures.  Not sure if I am wrong in feeling like that, but for some reason if they were going I would think it makes more sense to announce individually, whereas if they plan on staying it makes the most sense to announce together.

Perhaps I'm way off.

But ESPN's front page is reporting Gary Harris is coming back.  That's a little surprising to me given his high projection and his nagging shoulder injury, but very good for MSU.  Here's to hoping GRIII and MM make teh same decision.

I've decided to have a press conference at 6pm tonight to let everyone know that I have made up my mind .... on something, uh whatever.   Oh yeah ... it's whether I'm going to go to work tomorrow.   And YES  -  MONEY is THE determining factor!

I never thought Mitch would leave. The joint press conference seems like a good time for the new faces of the program to announce they are coming back to lead the team next season.

It will gut the team if they leave. This program needs them one more year to continue building it up otherwise it will be back to square 1. I think they stay because this year was Burke's and Hardaway's. Next year will be all about McGary and Robinson. I think they will want that.

The fact that they are holding a joint conference is pretty much a dead giveaway that they are returning. If either was going pro, that guy would want to have an individual conference for his "special moment."

McGary just looks like he's having too much fun in college to leave after only a year.

Plus Trey just set a great example.  You can leave when people are thinking maybe you're a lottery pick.  Or you can wait until people are thinking maybe you're #1 overall.

Neither are lottery picks, but both could be after next year.  With the rookie scale, it's important to maximize draft position.  They will make more by playing another year than leaving now, due to increased income.

Then, there is always the fact that the higher a player is drafted, the more support he gets from the organization that drafted him, becuase they have a larger investment to protect.

Leaving after your freshman year isn't what it used to be.  The NBA is full of giant veterans and journeymen just waiting for the first opportunity to send your 19 year-old self packing for the Belarus B League.

Take advantage of the rookie scale, insurance and time commitment that is given to those who return and get drafted higher the next year.

They should without a doubt.  Both need to more fully develop their games.  MM needs to work on his short jumper and free throws.  GRIII needs to gain strength and also develop a better jump shot.  I'd also like to see him attack the basket more instead of mainly waiting for the alley-oop passes.

But with these guys Michigan should contend for a B10 title next year.
