Exit James Hudson Comment Count

Brian October 22nd, 2018 at 7:19 PM

Well, this makes no sense:

247Sports was able to confirm on Monday evening that second-year offensive lineman James Hudson asked for and was granted his release from the program. Michigan spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed the report, stemming from a Facebook post written by Hudson's mother on Monday evening.

Hudson is not apparently in any trouble and had been heavily hyped as a major talent at tackle. Until about two seconds ago he was regarded as the favorite to replace Juwann Bushell-Beatty next year. So this is a bizarre one.

Andrew Stueber and Jalen Mayfield now step into the on-deck circle at tackle. This probably won't be a problem—hail Warinner—but losing a talented redshirt freshman at a spot where you want to have all the lottery tickets you can gather is a blow.

Unless he's decided being an offensive lineman sucks and wants to play defense, very weird. It's not like the 4 game thing applies, he already redshirted, so leaving right this instant is strange. Even if he was passed on the depth chart for now, he's not been focused solely on OL for that long, and could easily take the job back in the spring or fall as he gets more coaching/experience at the spot.

So... does he hate playing OL?

Well, this isn’t ideal.  I remember seeing him tag himself in Toledo a week ago in the morning before our last home game in his Instagram story.  I figured it wasn’t anything to be worried about at the time, but perhaps something was up.  This is disappointing.

I always hate losing talented players.  It seems we are losing quite a few lately.  I am concerned about our depth going forward.  Is this type of attrition unusual or par for the course?

There is no "usual" -- this is the free-agent era of big-time college sports. It started in college basketball a few years ago (remember how big a deal it was when Spike left for Purdue and how shocked, SHOCKED a lot of people, including Beilein, were when that happened? Now, it's regular thing for 1-3 people to leave); the last couple years, it has really come in a big way to college football.

Clemson is the #2 team in the country; they have every amenity & level of success you can imagine. And Kelly Bryant decided to leave, mid-season, b/c he was passed on the depth chart (unlike in the Hudson case, Bryant did it early enough where he can play next year). That left the #2 team in the nation with no real backup at QB.

Would that have happened, even 5 years ago? Nope. But that's how it is now.

If *starters* start to leave -- well, then you've got something unusual.

Exactly. Kelly Bryant leaving --- when he did --- made complete sense. It got him to where he was going (a new school) quicker. He will play somewhere in 2019, and will starting practicing with that team in January.

I have not heard a good explanation yet, if PT was the issue, why Hudson leaving now, as opposed to after the OSU game / B1G championship game makes any sense. It doesn't change his status with whatever new school he picks.

But kids are clearly being influenced by these high-profile cases; when they want to go, they go. And other coaches are more used to this free-agency and the idea of adding someone who "quit" (even if that's not what happened) on their previous team is more of an option.

EDIT: here are a three examples; there are quite a few more:

Yes, perhaps this is just a symptom of an overall change in college sports.  I am curious if our number of player defections is unusual compared to other top programs.  I assume that the young man is making the best decision for him and wish him all the best.  From a Michigan program perspective, however, I am just concerned about our depth going forward.

It just doesn’t make sense.  Michigan hasn’t been in this kind of prominent position in 12 years.  Why would a potential starter leave?   The program is sky high right now, coming off a program changing victory, and he decided he wanted no part of it.   Odd.

"The program is sky high right now, coming off a program changing victory, and he decided he wanted no part of it."

If we were scuffling along at 2-5 and had just had our asses kicked by MSU, it would be much more understandable for a still-young player to conclude "eh, it ain't happening here and I'm out."

But now? When you're just one bunged up knee away from substantial playing time this year, let alone next year? For the #5 team in the land?

I wonder if this new database has kids thinking it best to get their names out there earlier.  Don’t they essentially get to be recruited as soon as they get their release?  Maybe there’s an advantage to starting the process right away.  Who knows.  Good luck to him!

Well, this looks like a snap decision that was fueled by one or both of his parents. This is part of the problem with young people, especially those that were highly recruited and want everything right now. Don't understand what he thinks he has to gain, he will have 2 years left, going to a new program, he has virtually no OL experience. I suppose he could move back to DT at his next stop, but he still has to fight for a spot if he goes to a top school, or he could just to MSU, Dantonio would probably give him whatever he wants just to say he has a player that realized MSU was a better option than UM. Oh well onward we go, those that stay will be champions

Stueber was injured for most of fall camp.  Could be he has fully recovered and passed Hudson on the RT depth chart.  Mayfield is #2 at LT, so that would leave Hudson as the potential 2019 backup RT.  Maybe Stueber is that much better once he got healthy and James did not want to be a backup plan.  Something happened that pissed-off Hudson.

Makes sense that he'd be frustrated, since Stueber passed him on the depth chart. Kind of childish to make the transfer announcement right on the heels of the game, though, if you ask me. It's a tough call for a kid in Hudson's shoes, but no need to make the announcement the day after the program's biggest victory in the past few years. Just comes across as sour grapes.

Off hand it sucks to lose a talented potentially future starting tackle.  He seems like our most talented tackle prospect.  But, ultimately if he lacks what's needed to contribute for this coaching staff then he's better off somewhere else, regardless of whether that's mental or physical.  I wish we could have seen what he can do, but good luck to him and on to the next one.

Runyan will probably be back next year as a 5th year senior and the way he's been playing lately will be our starting LT again.  That leaves only one tackle spot open next year, so Hudson would likely be sitting next year too since Mayfield and Steuber seem ahead of him.

Leaders And Best

It makes some sense from a transfer perspective. If you are dead set on transferring (like Drew Singleton), you are better off doing it after your freshman or sophomore academic years. You could go JuCo route for a year, play and get recruited, and then have two years at another school to finish off. Similar to what Keith Washington did, and it worked out OK for him.

If you wait until after your junior or RS sophomore year, you might as well stay and get your degree and then graduate transfer. The one exception is if you can get your degree in three years.

The part that doesn't make sense is why do it in the middle of the semester and football season (same question applies to Drew Singleton). You aren't getting this season back if you have already redshirted so you might as well stick it out with the team, practice, train, and get better. I assume he will finish out the academic semester for school, but if he quits school as well, it is a really big mistake.

Something happened with James. Maybe he did not pan out in the 2-deep as planned and he pulled the rip cord.  Too bad, as he seemed like a great teammate and player with high potential.  Shit happens.

From someone 20 years out of school - I wish for Hudson's sake that he would have gotten his Michigan degree.  It has helped me out so many times in my career.  Unless he is transferring to Stanford or Ivy League it's not a good move.  He had a chance to start next year unless he really doubts his abilities.  Play four years, get your M degree and grad transfer.  It makes no sense to sit out a year.  He needed to think this out more.  JMO and good luck young man.

He's gonna go somewhere and turn into a good player I was so excited for this kids future at Michigan. I watched him in high school in the Toledo area and was so impressed with his strength and power. I wish him the best but Michigan will be just fine without him. Too bad

In the age of narcissistic social media platforms, is it any wonder that entitlement and instant gratification permeate our thinking? This may not be the case here but if it walks like a duck.

Yeah, it sucks. But the offensive line is fine next year. We should be at least eight deep.

LT - Runyan (RS SR)

LG - Bredeson (SR), Spanellis (RS JR)

C - Ruiz (JR), Paea

RG - Onwenu (JR), Filiagia (RS SO)

RT - Stueber (JR), Mayfield (SO)

This sucks, and I worry at all the sudden attrition. Is this a red flag issue for our culture?

But I also understand wanting a fresh start. My sophomore year I just wanted out at Michigan for a variety of reasons. I was young and emotional and hated going to campus every day. It got better.

I wish he had stayed. But I also wish him the best, player wise and person wise. Go be successful and happy young man.

I think the program is still trying to keep Hudson. As Harbaugh said (or I think he said), even he almost wanted to leave the program once.  Let's hope it does for his sake as well as the program's.

True Blue Grit

Yes, Brian is right. This really makes no sense.  If he was really going to be a likely starter next year, leaving is illogical.  Probably there is another story we're not seeing like how he felt he fit into the team or his relationship with the coaches or his schoolwork.  Who knows.  But if he doesn't want to be here, fine.  Time to move to the next guy.

Guy had amazing DT film. I was mad when we moved him to offense and I am disappointed he is gone. This sucks. Good luck to the young man moving forward (just not against Michigan if we ever play against him).
