OT- Official MGoPaczki day Thread-- how many have you eaten?
It's Paczki day in Metro Detroit and all cities with a substantial Polish population... how many are you going to eat today? What is your favorite flavor? New Martha Washington or New Palace Bakery? Will you go see the Polish Muslims perform tonight in Hamtramck?
I'm on #2 right now and this when I feel worst about my (self) imposed exile from the Great Lake State... the paczki from anyplace except Hamtramck just don't taste the same (but at least in SW Ohio, they can still spell 'paczki' and don't just try and pass off regular jelly doughnuts)
When I was at U of M, I used to wake up at 4a on Paczki Day, drive down to Hamtramck and get 2-3 dozen to bring back from my morning class on that day along with a box for the ChemE and AOSS admin offices.. later that evening, we'd go to Old Town Tavern and give them Polka music to play to rest of the evening... it was a good time.
Any MGoBloggers suggest good paczki places in non-metro Detroit locations for the readers of the board? Chicago? Pittsburgh? Buffalo? Milwaukee? I scoured lists of bakeries in Boston one time for a buddy who was living there and found him a single place with real paczki... it was a hour long subway ride out to Chestnut Hill, but he was happy.
Trying not to eat a third but damn are they good. Country Maid bakery in Portage or Macknzies' bakery in Kalamazoo make really a good one. If you didn't put an order in yesterday fat chance you'll get any though.
I don't like jelly donuts. Maybe I'll pick some up for my customers.
Calling paczki "jelly donuts" is like calling a Maybach "just a car".
2 so far, more to go throughout the day. Bakery department at Giant Eagle does a fine job.
The parents went to Hamtramack and picked some up. One more is sitting on my counter
and a few more later on.
I'm on one but will shortly be double fisting.
Lamentably, those things destroy my thirty-eight year old stomach. One of our associates brought a mountain of them into the office this morning and I must resist temptation....
None. This is a tradition I must investigate. Any occasions to eat the traditional cooking of the homeland are A-OK with me.
I couldn't contain myself and ate two last night. Then I just had 2 this morning. Probably another 2 tonight!
Ich ben ein Berliner?
Get the fuck out of my thread.
Get him! He's a Nazi!
Nein.
Got mine in the mail yesterday. Mardi Gras King Cake, traditionally cut and served with one piece containing a plastic "baby Jesus". The person receiving the baby has to buy the next cake.
Think super, awesome coffee cake
My graph theory professor pulled a similar trick on us today. Only the person who got the baby had to present their HW solutions on the board. Everyone else got seconds of the cake. It was awesome
I'm on #4 right now!
I was lucky enough to be invited to a Polish Thanksgiving one year when I was traveling for work. My friend's little old Polish grandmother made one of the best meals I've ever had with a mix of traditional Thanksgiving food and Polish dishes. My name is Tim but the way she pronounced it sounded like Sam. At the end she brought out "pie apple" for desert and insisted than Sam have a piece.
OP, what's the name of the place in Chestnut Hill that sells these Paczki things?
but it was two or three stops short of Boston college on the Green Line. I think at the time I google'd "paczki and boston" and it came up pretty quickly. Sorry I can't be more help.
"Eat! Eat!"
...for posting this. I'd forgotten (despite reminding myself before bed last night). Got to work, saw your post, exclaimed "SHIT!" then jumped in my car and ran down to Copernicus on S. Main...(they bring them in from Hamtramck)... now back at work with a half dozen (3 custard, 3 plum) sitting in front of me. Mmmmm......
EDIT: Make that half dozen minus one...
Paczki Day is one of the few things I miss about living in the Detroit area. I'm sure if I walked into a bakery in the DC area today and asked for one, I'd get some raised eyebrows and strange looks.
Unfortunately no one in my class this morning had any idea what I was talking about, so sad. There's an Italian bakery down the street from me, but I don't think they have paczki. I think I'm going to miss out this year.
Too rich for me. I like a simple, glazed donut with no filling.
Two raspberry vodka paczki from Whiskey in a Jar in Hamtramck. And yes, vodka raspberry filled paczkis are as delicious as they sound
Was able to find a dozen here in D.C. Not as good as the official ones out of Hamtramck, but still a reminder of home.
asap.
Giant has them.
I used to work in East Quad's cafeteria and we (the student staff) secretly organized Panczki eating contests in the salad prep room. It was hilarious to watch each other stuff powder sugared paczkis while it was happening, but when you've consumed more than 6 paczkis in less than three minutes time, the aftermath is not so fun. Regardless, it was a disgustingly delicious good time.
Now I live less than 2 hours from the Polish border and not one damn paczki in sight.
A friend and loyal mgoblog reader who somehow won't sign up to post, has eaten 13 on Fat Tuesday before. Also has eaten 2 Chipotle burritos in one sitting. Alas he plays hockey and is skinny as a rail.
Two. I may not be done for the day.
The thing is (here comes the negbang), I don't even LIKE them all that much. But once a year, I'll shovel in multiples, because This is what we do [/eminem]
Anyone know where to get one in Chicago?
unfortunately they do not exist in Arizona. If they do, I am unaware of it. I honestly thought this was a national tradition, not just Michigan.
Four.
And where's the best place to get 'em in Ann Arbor?
