I didn't notice any mention of Craig Roh. In the new scheme, I'm assuming he will be moved to a linebacker position. Up to this point, despite his lack of size and struggles to stop the run, Roh has seemed most comfortable on the D-Line. Has anyone heard anything with regard to the new staff's plans for him?

I know this is different than the title, however, I do not have enough points for my own post.  Maybe someone else can start a new post and copy/paste.

I thought this was great stuff.

I was able to attend the Nike Coach of the Year Clinic this weekend, and Coach Hoke and his staff were present.

Best part was that I was able to spend about 90 minutes with Coach Mattison.  What a great guy, plus he gave some great insight for the upcoming year.  Here is a breakdown of the conversations that I and about 4 other HS coaches had with him.

Things we aleady knew... Michigan will employ a 4-3 under look.  This will look like a 5-2 to many, however, the Sam linebacker will be on the line (TE side) with LB responsibilities.

Things we may not have known....paraphrasing Mattison the best I can from memory.
1.  M. Martin will love this defense, as opposed to getting doubled all the time last year.
2.  Not sure what the deal with Will Campbell last year, but he should fit perfect in the 3 tech.  He is winning most group competitions.  Apparently was not skinny enough to play in last year's scheme.  Tried to make move him to OL last year, but reminds Mattison of Haloti Ngata (sp?)  6'5"  345 lbs  WC that is.
3.  Roh is perfect fit for rush end.  (We already knew this)
4.  Cameron Gordon looks like a good fit at SLB instead of safety.  Perfect body type and athleticism for this spot.

Couple other little nuggets.
1.  Will hit more than they've ever hit.  Not necessarily tackling to the ground every day, but will hit everyday.
2.  Will run pursuit drills everyday until perfected.
3.  Shocked in first few film sessions by the inability of players to watch film correctly.  (got banned from Scout this morning for film comment)

Spent time talking about other things as well, but this post is long enough as it is.

"Shocked in first few film sessions by the inability of players to watch film correctly."

That kind of thing bothers the hell out of me, but definitely raises the confidence in this unit for the fall. How the defense never learned to even watch film correctly is beyond me (seriously, what the fuck GERG?!). Sounds like Mattison is going to do a hell of a lot to get the defense ready for the fall!

It was my copy paste.  Tom Beaver booted me this morning for the film comment.   Here are my emails from Scout.

I can only assume you were trying to stir the pot.

The only thing I removed was the satire, and I locked it because of the recrimination-replies that the satire generated.

My Response To Tom Beaver:

Did you read the post?  If you actually read the post, you would have noticed that none of the info came from me.  This was a high-profile coach that made the comments, not me.

My intent was to share interesting information and not to stir the pot.  Any background research would have shown that.

It is sad that 99% was great stuff, however, 1 bit of info is what you focus on.  Big question for me....why pay $ and have relevant stuff censored???????

His final response:

ah, it wasn't a misunderstanding then

Had you read my inbox to you -- I edited and locked the post because the replies became the same-old-fighting ... it wasn't an attack on you

The Read-Only is because you're still in fight-mode

Apologies then. I am truly sorry for my words. I don't mind the sharing of info but it was a copy and paste and since it was posted last night on Scout it seemed like you read it and wanted to share with MGo. When I initially read it on Scout I thought it was a great post and one of the better ones I've read in the last month that was not in reference to recruiting. That is some real BS that you were blocked from posting anymore. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I've always thought TB was a jerk too.

Awesome information. THANK YOU!

One of the things I heard over and over agin from past players when they went back to see RR's practices is that the team simply did not HIT enough anymore!

Many of these former players would hear RR lament about poor tackling and ball security and pull their hair out because they felt like RR didn't realize that the only way college kids get better at those two things is to HIT... a lot!

I can't take this guy seriously, because evidently he thinks Roh will be kept at LB since he isn't listed on the D-line preview.  Anyone who thinks Roh won't be a DE with this staff is a moron, and therefore, I cannot believe the rest of his analysis is worth reading.

Rob White doesn't mention Roh once in the Trenches article, not even as a backup.  Was this an article written by looking at the latest roster, or watching the games?

hmmm.

The offensive line is the main reason I think the offense does not regress as much as people think. God willing one of our running backs will benefit from our O-line. Oh yeah and Denard should do pretty good as well.

On defense I am for once cautiously optimistic. Basically the question I have to ask myself is can it possibly be any worse? I am setting the bar for the defense at #70 overall. Anything better than that and we are going to have a pretty damn good season.

From the article:

"Campbell is loaded with potential and will finally make an impact in 2011."

Sorry -- I'll believe that when I see it.

I'd love to see it too, but I fall in your camp. He's had somewhere around zero impact in two years. Without a breakthrough performance somewhere on the interior, Michigan is going to struggle (again) against the run.

Rob White here, thanks for the feedback on Roh and for the kind words some of you had for me.

I knew I'd come under fire on Roh. I've edited the post to list him at DE. Like I said on my post comment; I always thought Roh could thrive in a Shawn Crable like role at OLB.

Anyway thanks again for the feedback

I love the passion at MGoBlog for Michigan, you guys are awesome.

Go Blue and how about that basketball team!

Nice edit, good write-up.  The Roh deal was the only questionable piece

On Christian Pace - have you heard anything injury-related?  Please do not divulge anything if it's something the team wouldn't want out, but I also was very hopeful for Rivals' #7 rated C from 2009.  I will sleep much better if Pace is a viable back-up at C/G.

"Shocked in first few film sessions by the inability of players to watch film correctly.  (got banned from Scout this morning for film comment)"

Sadly, that explains a lot. If you can't do this, how can you anticipate what the other team will do? How can you form organized strategies?
